President of the Cultural Landscape Foundation tells The Atlantic what a huge mess DC is for our 250th birthday as a country. It's not good.

From the Atlantic, The Capital is a Mess:

“It’s as if there were a natural disaster, and we’re looking at the damage after a hurricane. Or think of Manhattan after the World Trade Center was hit by an act of terrorism,” Charles A. Birnbaum, the president of the Cultural Landscape Foundation, told me. “If you were just to parachute into Washington, you’d say: Gosh, what happened here?”

Happy Birthday America."

What are some recommendations for great Portland coffee roasters?

I just got my first high quality espresso machine. I want to use freshly (or fairly freshly) roasted coffee beans. Does anyone have some local roasters they really like? I usually like a dark roast. I live in inner NE so roasters in that area would be particularly appreciated.

Thanks!

Remember these drinking glasses?

My dad would drink a very cold Michelob beer in them. I saw this at a local thrift shop and had to get it!

It’s pretty awkward to drink from!! But it has such clean lines.

Remember restaurants on the upper levels of department stores?

They actually had really good food made from scratch on the premises. Lots of deserts, many of them creamy.

My mom would take me sometimes as a special treat.

Oregon's statement on why we won't join Trump's "Great American State Fair" in DC

"The State of Oregon will not be participating in the Great American State Fair due to both the cost of participating in the Fair and growing concerns that the event in Washington D.C. is shaping up to be a more partisan affair than originally presented,” Oregon spokesperson Luke Harkins told CNN.

Yay for us! We don't want to take part in such b.s.!

And apparently the grounds were empty and a well-known Republican influencer got arrested for jerking off to female acrobats. Republicans have so many sexual issues! They seem to always be getting busted for something sex-related.

I'm so grateful to live here than in a red state.

Go Oregon! 💪

Grab a barf bucket and behold the U.S. passport commemorating the 250th.

I am so grateful we don’t all have to get this ugly thing! Imagine entering one of the many countries Trump has made our enemy and showing this piece of crap to the border agent. And of course he picked the picture that he thinks makes him look scary 🤣! Instead he looks like an angry old fat man using his walker. I don’t know if any country that has their current “leader” on their passport. This is so embarrassing.

Edit: You don’t have to get the passport. It is commemorative and only available in DC. Thank god!

Do your Ancestry results show that you have any Neanderthal genetic contribution?

May show a small amount ( ~1%) and I'm just wondering how many others have such a result? I imagine the majority of people of European descent have a small amount. I'm curious how often it's picked up.

Protesters Accused of Antifa Ties Sentenced to Up to 100 Years in ICE Attack (Gift Article)

This is unbelievable. As the article points out, none of the pardoned Jan 6ers received sentences nearly as long and they committed much more horrible deeds. Happened in Texas. On top of that, they are saying the protesters were " members of the of Antifa." Yeah, right. One person who was not even at the protest was given 30 years. I sure hope that most or all of these people will be pardoned in the future. One shot a cop in the neck so it makes sense that person serves some time, but 100 years!

Are tattoos popular in your country? If so, do both men and women get tattoos? Do people generally have hidden tattoos or like to show their tattoos? Do you have one?

In the U.S., tattoos are everywhere. They are very popular among most age groups. I know they are less popular or not popular at all in a lot of countries. What is your country like?
