From 50 to 57

From 50 to 57

I do cardio, swimming, and strength training. Favorite exercises include dips, pull-ups, seated, row curls, push-ups, flys, overhead press. 50 pounds lost and kept off. Also, gained some muscle. Still working to improve. As the question comes up, I did this naturally.

Working out with my son at the gym. Our routine. 🙂

My son and I have been working out together for years. It is our daily routine we both look forward to.

(OC) Same kid, same dad. We just never stopped. 🙂

These are a few moments from over the years.

We didn’t have a plan. We just kept showing up for each other.

Now we train together.

And honestly… that means everything to me.

Aging wasn’t what I thought it would be (57)

Top left is August 2012. Top right is December 2018. Bottom is now (2026).

I’m 57 now, and I turned my life around at 50. I didn’t want to drop dead from a stroke or heart attack—I wanted to be here for my family, especially him.

The pandemic was a wake up call… We were both home and it all started with a walk around the block. I started exercising every day—cardio, strength training—nothing fancy, just consistent.

My fitness is tied directly to my son: we swim together, train together, do cardio together. Over time I lost 50+ pounds, brought my A1c back to normal, and changed both of our lives in the process. No shortcuts, no TRT or drugs—just my path. Diet is simple: lean protein, fruit, vegetables, some carbs and fats. I log what I eat and try to stay honest.

By making these changes, I increased my chances that I can stay more longer for my family in the healthiest way possible.

From (50) to (57) — still working at it

I did this naturally. As the question comes up. Lots of protein, fruit, vegetables, healthy, carbs, and fats. Cardio, strength training, group support. And swimming.

From 50 to 57… Still working at it

Still trying to lose those love handles, but happy with the progress that I’ve made.

This is a follow up to my earlier post. I lost my leg to a drunk driver in May 2009, when I was 40. These photos are from 2010 to now. I’ve struggled with obesity my entire life. I lost a lot of weight in the hospital. The first picture shows me when I was just starting to walk again in 2010. And then it shows years of extreme obesity. And then, changes, starting with the pandemic in 2020. I found a reason larger than myself to make changes. My family. At age 50, my risk of dropping dead of a heart attack or a stroke was becoming greater. I began to lose the weight slowly and began to exercise and do strength training. Cardio, swimming, and weightlifting. Logging all of my food. Focusing on lean proteins, fruit, vegetables, healthy, carbs, and fats. Losing the weight slowly, about 2 to 3 pounds a month. Changing my habit it’s an acting like the person that I want to be. Not everything is within our control. But other things that I can control, I do, to the best of my ability, without, of course, being perfect. I wanted to offer this as my perspective on aging, and not just aging, but aging with a disability. I post to share my journey and a show what was possible for me to accomplish. I’m in the best shape of my life, at age 57. What that does is it allows me to be the best that I can be for my family. Thanks for reading.
