Warhammer 40K RPGs

I am a bit confused. What are the differences between the Fantasy Flight RPG and the Wrath and Glory game? What are the supplements for the earlier work? How many species can I play in both games? Are there complete lists of class options?

Midnight Conversion

I discovered Midnight (3.5) and am drawn to its low-magic system. For context, I am looking for a high fantasy game with low magic. If I used the Midnight system, I would throw out the setting for a more traditional fantasy setting.

Is this system good for a low magic game? Is it a balanced system? How could I import some type of balanced Cleric or holy-person class into the system given that I am dispensing with the setting? Are there other games which would better suit my needs?

Classes (Multiclass) for a Character

This character promotes order. He fights with a staff or warhammer and is a spell-caster. Most of his effects are telekinetic based: he slams the staff on the ground and enemies are blasted based; he erects a protective barrier; he blasts someone by hitting the weapon on the ground. I don’t think he would wear substantial armor.

I have two images in my head of him: Gandalf the Grey and Thundering Rhino from Kung Fu Panda.

What class(es) should he be? What spells, weapons, armor, archetypes, and feats are best for him? I imagine that he fights for a God, but maybe he doesn’t need to be a divine class in order to do this.

What Alignment Should my Character Take?

He believes in the natural (this goes beyond nature and civilization) order of things. For instance, experiments which result in mutation, someone trying to learn secrets which are not of this world, and a good character attempting to magically turn all beings good would bother him. He doesn’t care about law in the sense of government and society; he isn’t against it, but he isn’t particularly enthused by it, either. Ultimately, the natural way that things are and should be is more important to him than strict codes or rigid rules. He cares more about doing the right thing than doing the evil or good thing.

Avatar of Balance

I want to play a champion of Balance; someone who strives to maintain the order of things. This character would probably be neutral good; he doesn’t like chaos exactly, but he isn’t necessarily a fan of law and institutions, either. I imagine that the ideal classes for this sort of character would be Magus, Cleric and Paladin (Champion). Which classes, oaths, subclasses, and archetypes would best suit this concept?

Addition: ORDER and BALANCE are different. This character would be more interested in an underlying order of the universe or of a deity than he would in laws and organizations.

Classes and Flexbility

Class Flexibility

Which classes allow for the most options when it comes to deigning good or strong builds (not necessarily incredibly optimized)? I prefer playing classes which let me figure out which of several paths to take rather than characters with just a few clearly defined options. Thank you!

If I had to name the classes I was most interested in based on theme, they would be Paladin, Fighter, Monk, Psychic, Kineticist, Vigilante, Magus, Wizard, and Alchemist.

Sourcebooks and Balance

I wanted to thank everyone for being so helpful. This is the last group of questions I will ask for a while.

For context, I want to play an Iron-man type character who relies on equipment—in this case, specifically a suit. I have been thinking about many different ways of building such a character: importing the Synthesist Summoner or Aegis into 3.5, coming up with a kind of Wild Shape equivalent for construct transformation (I had the idea that at level one, the character could "transform" into some construct. Obviously, the Iron Golem as-written would be too powerful; but maybe he could be adjusted to function at various levels. As the character progresses, he can make modifications to the constructs—giving them better armor or weapons or abilities—and can use transform into more constructs. But I have no idea how to do any of this; would it require creating a new class?); playing an existing class which mechanically lets me do what I want, with the flavor of Iron-man supplied by me. (Maybe I could be a magic-user and just say that my abilities are manifest in the equipment.) The "suit" would ideally—not necessarily from the beginning—replace OR augment my character's physical abilities, and allow me to use certain weapons (spells? Examples: sword, hammer, crossbow, flamethrower, repulsor equivalent) and abilities (protecting forcefield?).

There are also a bunch of sourcebooks which might make this easier: Fantastic Science, Dragonmech, d20 Mech, Steam and Science, Mechamancy. Are these compatible with 3.5? Are they generally balanced? Has anyone suggested revisions to the books if things in them are too strong or too weak?

My GM will let me use whatever I want—Aegis or Magitech Templar or "The Tinkerer [3.5 Base Class] (Incarnum...ish)" would be fine)—but I would much rather play something balanced; and neither he nor I are the people to ask for advice on balance. What I don’t want is to bring something in which will be extremely weak or extremely strong compared to the rest of the party. We are fine with using classes of all power levels, but we probably won’t optimize them too much. If this were a card game, we would not be playing competitive decks, but strong decks.

Thank you!

Pathfinder to 3.5

I have read the guide on how to convert classes from 3.5 to Pathfinder. Is there a guide on how to convert classes from Pathfinder to 3.5? Specifically, I am interested in bringing the Summoner and Aegis to the earlier game. Thank you for your help!

Spheres and More General Questions

So I am new to Pathfinder (I’ve played fifth edition) and am interested in playing an Iron-man type character who relies on armor and technology more generally rather than magic (or at least manifests his magic in-game through technology). I’ve heard that a Synthesist Summoner (Aegis?) could work for this flavor, but people have also mentioned the Spheres books. Are they worth looking into given my interests? Can Spheres-characters coexist with non-Spheres characters? How does a non-spell caster use a Spheres book, if at all?

I also wonder if there is a comprehensive list of classes and archetypes. In particular, are there third-party options which are generally accepted as interested and (or) well-balanced?

Lastly, do prestige classes exist in 1e, and if so, is there a list of them?

Options Consolidated

Are there lists of all the base classes, prestige classes, and races which I can review? I am not overwhelmed by the number of options, but I am having a hard time finding everything. Thank you!

3.0 and 3.5

I know nothing about these editions. Are there beginner guides which I could read or watch? Is there a comprehensive list of classes, races, etc. that I could review? What books are important? What are the bear character sheets and character builders? I am interested in playing an Iron-man (Artificer or Inventor and their equivalents) inspired character. All help is appreciated!

Legacy versus Remastered

Can someone explain the differences between these two systems to me? Which is better? How do I know which version someone is talking about? I was watching some videos made by Thraben, The Rules Lawyer, Nonat, and others, and I often can’t tell if they are talking about Legacy or Remastered.

Spheres and Ultimate Engineering

Someone mentioned that I should look at the Spheres books if I want to create an Iron-man type character. I am a bit overwhelmed by all these options. Could someone explain to me the basic elements of these books or direct me to previous discussions of them that are reliable? Is there a guide to creating characters either these books that I can read? Thank you!

Pathfinder: Beginner Questions

  1. What are the best online character builders?

  2. What are some classes to look into if I want to play an inventor or armor master à la Iron Man?

  3. What are the main differences between first and second edition?

Thank you for your help!
