Anyone home-rules javelins?

I'm making a Roman inspired warband, and obviously 1 of the classic weapons of the Legionary is the pilum, which I'll be counting as probably a single-use light ranged attack on the models that have them.

Question is whether anyone else has done something similar, and how you accounted for it rules wise? Obviously the models will technically have a shield and 2 weapon options (the gladius and pilum) which I dont think is in the rules but assume is ok?

Shelfie time

My mostly BL (well, mostly HH πŸ˜… ) shelves - a lot of other Black Library novels I have are digital. Used to own all the Gaunt's Ghosts novels, as well as Titanicus and some of the older Warhammer Fantast stuff, but they mostly disintegrated from overuse.

First map I am happy enough with to publish

As per the title - Ive been using Inkarnate for a couple of years for basic RPG and story maps, but never published any before. Happy enough with this 1 to make it my first and would love some C & C from the pros.

Made entirely for fun in the new Parchment 2.0, but I think with the effort I've put in, I'll use it for a Five Leagues From the Borderlands campaign I've been wanting to start.

How do we feel about Malazan Book of the Fallen?

I love it. It is such a vibrant series, the scope of the worlds presented is just insane, the prose is wonderfully unique (at least as far as I've seen) and the dry humour laced throughout all the books is just brilliant.

I am also a huge fan of how much goes unsaid - so much of the important character and story beats lie in the subtext. Hell, even a good chunk of the world building is alluded to rather than mentioned.

I'm aware it has a reputation for being dense, which I will admit I wasnt sure about with Gardens of the Moon, but I feel like the outcome of each book is well worth the effort because I personally don't know of many other series that match the scope of Malazan.

Just finished this 1, already ordered The Bonehunters so very excited to continue this and see where it all leads...

Karlina von Carstein

Another model I tried to up my game for recently - feel like I did a good job on the armour, slightly less so on the cloak and I absolutely still suck at painting faces πŸ˜… but overall I think she turned out pretty well

Lauka Vai, Mother of Nightmares

Absolutely love this model - I get the sculpt isn't for everyone, but I personally love the strangeness of it and lore behind the Vengorians in general is a very cool take on the monster inside becoming reflected on the outside.

Painting-wise, she was a nightmare πŸ˜… really wanted to push myself with this so I did as much NMM as I could which I think worked out well on some bits and less well on others - feel like I need more NMM blue practice but im still happy with how the armour came out.

I have always sucked at painting skin but I feel like I managed a nice, pale diseased/inflamed skin tone. So yeah, despite constantly questioning why I was doing it during the very lengthy process, I'm happy with how she turned out 😁

I'm so close

I can almost do the exercise that got me into calisthenics 6 years ago - couple of elbow injuries over the years and a lot of instances of getting bored and doing other skills, but having been at it for about a year or so (this time) I can finally see the finish line!

Some fancy new brushes for once

My wife was wondering what to get me for our anniversary since she flat out refuses to buy me any new models - very sensible of her considering the size of my pile of shame πŸ˜… instead she had the wonderful idea of getting me some more expensive brushes, something I've never bought myself (I'll use cheap brushes until they're no good even for drybrushing) which has given me the drive to complete a few of my WIPs.

The fight for Greater Helmus begins

Started putting this together as soon as the rules for the hex map campaigns dropped - now I just need to make sure I actually win the fights!

Questions on playability

Hello fellow Pillagers! Been wanting to get this game since it came out, partly because it sounds fun and partly because I love the Victrix historical range, so got 2 questions for those already in the know.

  1. How does this play as a solo game? I haven't been able to convince my friends to buy in, so just in case they don't like it when I get the rules and run a test game for them, how well will I be able to play it as a solo wargame?

  2. How easily can it be adapted to other time periods? As well as loving the setting it's for, I'd like to try using it with Romans, Crusaders, maybe even some Hundred Years War setting (I'm a big fan of the Thomas Blackstone novels and like the idea of a group of routiers going around the French countryside!)

Cheers all!

Best historical naval combat games

Hi all, just looking for some suggestions or guidance on naval combat games because I love the idea of ship-to-ship combat but never played any.

I'm not too fussed about the time period as long as the game is good, but I'd like to try at least 1 game from each of the below time periods:

Classical - never heard of a naval game set in Ancient Greece or anything, but if there is 1 that is fleets of triremes and quinqueremes I'm interested!

Age of Sail - I'm aware of things like Oak & Iron and Black Seas so after suggestions for the easiest/most fun for this.

WW2 - again, aware of things like Victory at Sea so after suggestions for the easiest or most fun.

Any other time period suggestions are welcome too, as are fantasy/alternate history games that would be roughly analogous.
