One of the best sunset views on Maui isn’t actually from the beach

Captured this offshore near Māʻalaea Bay looking toward the West Maui mountains during golden hour.

If you’re visiting Maui and want a different perspective of the island, sunset sails around Māʻalaea can be surprisingly beautiful — especially when the mountains start catching the last light of the day. The coastline looks completely different from the water.

This was one of those evenings where the ocean stayed calm just long enough for the light and clouds to line up perfectly.

A weathered shoreline tree above the lava coast in Makena, Hawaii [OC]

What caught my attention here was how the tree seemed shaped almost entirely by years of salt wind coming off the channel.

Most people walk this shoreline looking out toward the ocean, but I kept turning back toward the trees growing directly out of the lava rock. The shapes almost feel sculpted over time.

If you’re visiting Maui and planning to explore Upcountry, keep an eye out for the pull-offs and open pasture views above South Maui.

This spot looks out toward Molokini Crater and Kahoʻolawe, and the scenery changes constantly depending on the clouds and weather moving through the channel. A lot of visitors head straight for the beaches, but some of Maui’s best views are actually higher up on the slopes.

Upcountry is especially nice when you want a break from the hotter resort areas or crowded beaches.

If anyone wants recommendations for scenic Upcountry drives or quieter photography spots around Maui, happy to help. [OC]

A quieter side of Maui most visitors never see

A lot of people visit Maui, Hawaii for the beaches, but some of my favorite places are actually higher up in the pasturelands of Upcountry Maui.

I stopped here while driving above the South Maui coast and ended up watching clouds roll across the channel toward Kahoʻolawe for almost an hour. Molokini Crater is the small crescent-shaped island below in the water.

The elevation changes on Maui are wild. You can go from warm beaches to cool green hillsides with views like this in a pretty short drive. [OC]
