We just adopted this good girl from a sad situation. Do you know what breed/mix she is?

She's needing a bath and some grooming, but we're curious what you guys think! We were told she's a havanese mix, but I'm really not sure as her ears are not typical for a havanese. She's super sweet and gentle and doesn't have any prey drive thus far! She was already on a train with us and was snuggling so much. She's one and a half.

Foster Rats in Hamburg, Germany?

Hey r/rats community!

I’m reaching out from Hamburg, Germany, to see if anyone knows of any rescues, breeders, or individuals in the area looking for a foster home for two male rats.

(Rat tax of my current sweet boys in the comments/attached!)

The Situation:

My partner and I recently went through the heartbreaking loss of one of our three boys to a chronic URI. We tried everything, over 12 vet visits and months of medications, but sadly had to help him cross the rainbow bridge last month. 💔

This leaves us with two wonderful, friendly boys who are currently 1.5 years old. Because of their age, I am terrified of the day one of them passes and leaves the other completely alone. I know how cruel it is to keep a lone rat, so I want to proactively plan for the future. I would love to foster a pair of boys to integrate into our mischief so we have a continuous, stable group.

The Home We Offer:

My rats are absolute family to me, and we take their husbandry very seriously! If you have fosters looking for a temporary (or long-term foster) home, they would get:

Spoiled Free Roam: 2 to 4 hours of supervised free time every single night.

Great Diet: Science Selective lab blocks and fresh veggies every evening.

Enriched Cage: High-quality hemp bedding and a cage stuffed with hammocks, ladders, and foraging toys.

Medical Care: I am highly experienced with vet visits and strictly punctual with any medication schedules.

If anyone knows of a rescue network in Northern Germany that does foster-to-integrate setups, or if you need a foster home for your boys, please send me a DM! I would always prioritize their care and wellbeing.

Thank you so much!

The discussion happening in the comments of this video is fantastic!

I had several conversations with people under this video that told me they are now wanting to go vegan! Of course, some of the comments are frustrating, but I loved seeing curious empathetic questions people had and how so many vegans responded to help them get started with veganism!!

Completely burnt out right before graduation

Sorry for the rant:

I have no motivation whatsoever and I am so very close to my university graduation. I am in my final semester and am in a competitive design degree online. I have had many major changes this semester between leaving my culty religion and going vegan and losing one of my wonderful pet rats. I feel so unmoved to get the work done and my final grade will now be much lower than it could have been. I even thought about taking a leave of absence but I did that a year and a half ago as I had hit my limit and had no passion whatsoever. I don't know how to force myself through the burnout and I feel so ashamed that I am so behind on assignments. My hyperfocus and interests have been making me happy but I can't even trick myself into doing the work by incorporating my interests with my university work. How can I start the assignments and actually stay seated and do them? I want to do things to a high quality, so the guilt is really heavy that I am not even starting. All I do is lie in bed and cancel things and call out of work. I cannot get myself to shower or cook or clean. I moved countries earlier this year and haven't been able to get a psych appointment here so I haven't been medicated in a while.

I need ideas for how to get myself through!! please. I will take any advice you can share.

Insanity. I shed a tear. It's so delicious.

Both this and the pepper version finally showed up in my Hamburg Rewe. 🥲Last week I checked four Rewes after hearing this was really good and couldn't find it. This went beyond my expectations and I'm currently making sandwiches with this for non vegans who I hope will be vegan one day. I'm so so impressed. The texture, the flavor, the smell. It's all amazing. I just hope they don't discontinue it.🙏🏻🙏🏻 Lekka, I would sacrifice my future first born child for this salami to stay on the shelves.

How long until the pain in my chest goes away?

Today was my second day without Monk. My heart is aching and both of his brothers seem heartbroken too. I don't know how you guys do this?? It hurts so much. I've cried more for his death than I've cried for people I loved passing. I know it was his time but I still feel guilty about his passing even though it was the right decision to euthanize. What are your coping techniques? :(

Worried about my boys' mental health

I showed them Monk's body today for about thirty minutes and they both were showing more emotion than I expected. 😔 Godfrey was cleaning Monk and patting his fur and nudging his face. Edgar climbed into the box after cleaning Monk and even tried pulling the towel away and snuggle in the box I put Monk into.

I'm so heartbroken and now it seems like the boys are also very sad. Monk was like social glue and I'm worried about what these two will be like going forward. I'm going to get them some new foraging toys today and do a cage clean, unless that's a bad idea for the first day of grieving. They have been much more clingy today and also slept a lot more than usual.

I have about 10 hammocks in the cage including sputniks right now but I feel like maybe I can do even more? I'm really heartbroken and want to make sure my last two angels feel comforted and maybe distracted during this really sad time. 🐭💗

devastated + heartbroken 💔

I had to say goodbye to my sweet angel, Monk, today. He would have been two in February. He's had chronic illness since birth and these last few weeks was not as energetic as usual and yesterday stopped drinking water and stayed at the bottom of the cage and then had mouth breathing this morning. I loved him more than words can express. He was worth every vet trip and medication treatment we tried. He had the most wonderful rambunctious personality.

I wanted him to have a peaceful end and so even though maybe he could've made it a few more days, I made the extremely painful decision to have him euthanized. He had malt paste and baby food this morning. It was horrible hearing him scream for his first anesthetic shot but he fell asleep peacefully in my arms wrapped in a familiar blanket before the final shot. I kept telling him what a wonderful boy he was.

I will miss him so so much. This pain feels like more than I can bare. I miss his spirit and personality and I miss his soft tongue on my fingers. How do you guys get through this aching feeling?

When is it time to let go? :(

I have posted Monk here many times and he is now in hospice-like care and on three medications. He turns one and a half next month and has had a chronic URI since birth. He is so sweet and he still perks up for treats most of the time and I even see him playfighting with his brothers during free roam time most nights, but then he will have periods of rapid breathing where all he can do is focus on getting breaths, but there is no noise, just calm rapid heartrate. His chronic URI's led to lung scarring and some sort of rapid heartbeat. Our wonderful vet said I will know when it is time as I am very attentive to Monk, but I am torn up inside thinking about him not being in the cage with his brothers anymore. He still is very happy to be here and climbs and drinks water and eats lab blocks as long as they are soaked in water. I plan on buying baby food this week and making a clay imprint of his and his brothers' paws so that I have some closure before his passing.

I have a plan for when I will bring him in, if he stops eating or drinking or if he is lethargic and not moving and the labored rapid heartbeat goes on for more than two hours. I have cried everyday this week for hours. He has such a big personality and is such a big part of my life. How do you prepare for the inevitable? I am so heartbroken.

Can rats be autistic?

I have so much evidence of Edgar being on the spectrum but I'm not sure if there's documented studies on rats having forms of neurodivergence. I love him so much. If the DSM5 was for rats, he meets every category for a diagnosis.
