Improv classes in SF

I know this has been asked before but I'm just not sure what to do!

BATS improv

Endgames Improv

Leela Improv

It's been a dream of mine to take a class and finally the timing lines up and I am not traveling for 6 weeks! How do people decide between these? What types of questions should I be asking? They're all about equidistant from me, though one is more readily accessible due to underground Muni. They start this week or next and I want to sign up today!

Thanks!

HomePods keep randomly muffling music like Siri is listening, sometimes for minutes

Has anyone had this happen with their HomePods?

Lately when I’m playing Apple Music, the music will randomly get really muffled, almost like Siri is listening or I’ve said “Hey Siri" except I haven’t said anything. Sometimes it’ll last a few seconds, but other times it stays like that for a minute or two before going back to normal. I'm not sure what to do... My homepods are odd!

I’ve also noticed Siri randomly talking sometimes as if I said something to her when I definitely didn’t, which is kind of creepy.

I’m assuming the two things are related and that Siri is somehow getting triggered when nobody is talking to her, but I have no idea why the music would stay muffled for that long. I tried stopping and starting and it still happens. I have

Has anyone else had this happen or figured out how to fix it? I have a first gen one (the big one) and a homepod mini (from 2021).

Looking for chic wall mounted watch + iPhone charger

As the title suggests, looking for something aesthetically pleasing that I can mount on my wall to charge both my watch and phone. I saw one on Etsty which I thought was cool: it was a wood strip with a mount for an iphone and apple watch that looked chic, but I'm shocked there aren't more like it.

I bought the Galvanox magnetic stick on charger earlier this year but it very randomly stopped working.

PS: I'm guessing I can't post the Etsy link, so I didn't.

Easy French podcast - is a membership worth it?

I was considering subscribing for the transcript access so I can listen and read at the same time, but curious how others have found the membership. Is it useful?

Thanks!

Gonna bite the bullet - help for referral code and autopilot recs

I have decided I should just get the 8 Sleep. Several quick questions:

  1. I was going to do the enhanced autopilot to benefit from the 5 year warranty. Is there any more product protection I should buy? I've been reading some critical reviews of people here saying it's not a great buy, but curious what positives people have experienced as well.
  2. If I keep my dogs nails trimmed, should we be safe? She's not really the type to attack my bed, but still I wanted to be safe.

Thanks!

laquelle or qui

For the sentence, "The colleague to whom I sent the report thanked me this morning," which of the two translations sound better?

La collègue à laquelle j'ai envoyé le rapport m'a remercié ce matin.

La collègue à qui j'ai envoyé le rapport m'a remercié ce matin.

I wrote the former and GPT suggested the latter.

Dill in Indian food

I was watching this guy make an Sindhi thali here and he used dill. I've never really known dill to be used in Punjabi food, but so I'm curious what cuisines across the subcontinent use dill, and what are the local words used for it?

LLMs and vocab card creation

I understand that using LLMs to create flashcards on Anki is often not reliable or great, but I go through a process of manually researching each card, reforming, and conforming them as I study them.

This is my process. I look up words from literature and dump the words into GPT.

Front of the card:

- Word

- Example sentence of it for context

Back of card:

- Definition in English

- Definition in target language

- [Sometimes a mnemonic if needed]

As I review the cards on my macbook, I will often check them against WordReference to see if I'm on the money or not.

I wanted to ask what others do here or if they have any Anki prompts, etc., that would help. I do think the placement of my mnemonic on the back of my card might not be great, but I'm not an Anki expert and all the additional placements/card formats confuse me! hehe

Being seen by my parents - how to get them to be more curious about their children.

I am coming to the realization that my parents show no interest in me as a gay man. They never really have any curiosity into who I am, what my life is about, etc., but it's also because incurious about life itself. They just don't know how to exercise that emotional muscle. From a cultural standpoint, it's just also who they are and what they were raised with. I'm tired of feeling bad about this and visiting home with the expectation of some magnanimous change in their comportment towards me, and their truancy towards any fucking curiosity. They're 72 and I keep thinking about how much time we all have left together and it's painful to think about.

It's not all bad - I'm a Punjabi Sikh American, and I think it's tremendous how far they have come in their acceptance and love of their gay son. One thing I've been thinking about is their inner child and how they never learned to hear their own needs or see themselves for who they truly are. I know I'm not alone here, and I'm sure others have dealt with this too. My father is very open to reading about these things, so I'm curious what I can recommend to him to read about having a gay son or even being more curious about his children generally.

This has been more of venting and rant than a request, but I'd love to know what others have done to foster more curiosity from their parents into their children's lives. I want them to understand more about what it's like being a first generation queer brown American here (ok, technically 2nd, but this is always a confusing term)! What can they read? What can they watch?

Elle s'est fait laver sa voiture --> is it "sa" or "la"

Sentence: She had her car washed.

My attempt: Elle s'est fait laver sa voiture.

The correction I saw states "la voiture," and I'm wondering if in these types of constructions the definite article is more common than the possessive. Is possession already implied?

itinerary help: Ella and Kandy OR Hatton?

Salutations all!

Planning a Sri Lanka trip for next February with two friends and would love some advice from people who've actually been. (I posted about our itinerary here if anyone is interested!)

We're pretty low key travelers, and open to all sorts of things, but mainly just looking to imbibe Sri Lankan culture, food, and amazing vibes. I'm a linguist and also VERY interested in just being around Sinhala and Tamil, so I think that will be well covered for me!

We like beautiful boutique hotels, great food, walking around, coffee, beaches, and generally not feeling rushed. We aren't trying to cram in every major sight, and a lesson from last trips is that less is more. One major objective is spending some wonderful chill time at Silent Beach, for example.

Right now the itinerary is looking something like:

  • Negombo (1 night after landing)
  • Hill country
  • Tangalle for about a week in a beachfront Airbnb
  • Galle for a few nights before flying home

This is now up in the air (pardon the pun)! I am thinking that we might just land in Colombo and depending on the time, go straight to Kandy and start there, considering its under 3 hours in car and we can just sleep when we get there rather than having to unpack and repack.

Originally I was thinking:

  • 1-2 nights in Kandy (minimum 1 for the Temple of the Sacred Tooth relic)
  • Scenic train to Ella
  • 3 nights in Ella

But now I'm wondering if it would make more sense to skip both and spend 4 to 5 nights around Hatton instead. The tea bungalows and quieter vibe honestly seem more like our style. I am certainly not interested in seeming disrespectful by missing the quintessential cultural sites, but also rest is rest, and I feel like maybe just having the relaxation and vibe of Hatton could be better for us to have a longer initial stay and acclimate.

My questions:

  • Would it be a huge miss to skip Kandy and Ella for Hatton?
  • If our priority is beautiful scenery, relaxing, nice hotels, cafés, and good food, would Hatton actually be a better fit? I see that tea plantations are in all three.
  • If you've done all three, which did you enjoy more and why?

Curious what you'd recommend if you were planning this trip today.

Bootstrapping - I feel a difference already on day 3

It's only been 3 days, but my aligners already fit better where they bootstrapped my lateral incisor and I'm excited!

PRAYING my teeth are complete in the 2.5 weeks, though I suspect I'll have to do another round of refinements. Interestingly, I don't mind the bootstrap elastic as much as I do the night time elastics I have to wear, but the end is close and I can't wait!!!

Stubborn lateral incisor - got a triangle elastic

I'm on tray 17 of 20 in my first round of refinements. Before that, I had 60 trays, so it's been a journey.

I wasn't surprised when I started to see a gap around one of my lateral incisors, but when it happened a second time during refinements, I knew I had to do something. I called my orthodontist, and they put an elastic on that tooth. It loops around the tooth and applies pressure to help push it into the tray.

The dexterity required to get this elastic on is beyond me, so I'm sure that'll be a challenge, but I'm hoping it does the trick.

My last day of Invisalign is supposed to be Aug. 11, so I'm curious how likely it is that I'll actually be done then. Everything else is tracking well. I know it's probably a hard question to answer, but I wanted to ask the group how long they had this band before they noticed a change.

Can a LLM/GPT API fix the format/structure of my cards?

Good morning,

I am far from a super technical Anki user, but a learning I've had recently is around what the card format needs to look like with regards to centering, structure, etc. I am wondering if I could use Anki APIs and Claude/OpenAI and connect to it so that I can have Claude fix the formatting, font, structure, etc of my cards. Alternatively I might just create a csv export and have it fixed that way, but wanted some help/ideas here.

Thanks!

Why do you say J'y ai répondu instead of Je l'ai répondu?

I didn’t read the emails, but I answered them yesterday evening.

My attempt:
"Je n'ai pas lu les e-mails, mais je les ai répondus hier soir-là."

Correct answer:

Je n’ai pas lu les e-mails, mais j’y ai répondu hier soir.

Can someone help me figure out why the Y is needed here? I'm guessing I was wrong about the "them" being a COD here, hence why the participle doesn't agree.

December/January itinerary - advice sought

Hello all!

My friends and I are planning a trip for three to Sri Lanka in Dec/Jan and I was looking for some advice on my itinerary. Can I get some feedback/thoughts here?

Some important things from past trips we have taken: we are acutely interested in having some chill time by the beach, ideally not at a super populated or touristy location. I am much more hopeful to go where Sri Lankans go and be more integrated with locals, eat as they do, support local industry, etc. I really just want some amazing time to sit on a beach with a good book and not be accosted by aggressive influencer types.

The below itinerary was generated from research we did last year, and I've consolidated it into this list + map using GPT.

Here is a general map of the trip we have planned (to be read in a clockwise fashion):

Dates Base Nights Purpose
December 18 to 19 Negombo or airport area 1 Recover from flight
December 19 to 21 Kandy 2 Culture, walking, train departure
December 21 to 25 Ella 4 Mountains and a slower pace
December 25 to January 1 Tangalle area 7 Beachfront villa and real relaxation
January 1 to 3 Galle Fort 2 Food, shops, architecture, walking

Negombo, December 18 to 19

  1. Recover near the airport after the long flight
  2. Walk along the beach or canals
  3. Have an easy seafood dinner and sleep

Kandy, December 19 to 21

  1. Walk around Kandy Lake
  2. Visit the Temple of the Tooth
  3. Begin the scenic hill country train journey

Ella, December 21 to 25

  1. See Nine Arch Bridge
  2. Walk Little Adam’s Peak
  3. Enjoy tea country views, cafés, and a cooler mountain climate

Tangalle area, December 25 to January 1 - Maybe we extend this to be longer?

  1. Stay in an elegant Airbnb steps from the beach
  2. Spend slow days swimming, reading, and eating seafood
  3. Visit nearby Goyambokka, Mawella, or Hiriketiya when you feel like exploring

Galle Fort, January 1 to 3

  1. Walk the historic fort walls and narrow streets
  2. Eat at cafés and restaurants within walking distance

• 3. Browse boutiques, galleries, books, and local crafts

Colombo - Jan 3

  1. Flight home

Success with Langua app

Salut!

I got the Langua app last year, and I've finally settled into a routine where I'm using it regularly. It really feels like it's starting to pay off and I think I am finally learning a bit more now.

I take French lessons with Lingoda, and while I love them, I've found it's much harder to work diligently on writing and grammar on my own. So I've been using Langua to journal about my day and get feedback and corrections. And I also make copious Anki note cards and try and keep those going too.

Lately, I've also been asking Langua to give me English sentences to translate into French for extra practice, and I'm finally starting to feel more discerning about my absolutely atrocious spelling. It's helping! Today, for example, I've been working on "ce dont" vs "ce que" and earlier this week I spent some time asking about the passé composé and the tricky agreement rules that I keep stumbling over. But the point is clear: I have settled into some regularity of studying French a little bit daily.

I was curious what others have found useful. How are you using AI to supplement your French? I think it can be a really powerful tool for reinforcing the basics. Of course, nothing replaces a classroom or actual conversations with real people, but as a supplement, I've found it genuinely helpful.
