I prefer the old art, is the 2nd edition card text worth getting the new one?

I’ve seen it said that the 2nd edition is better and definitive edition, but I’ve also seen high praise for the art work and I’m not a fan especially compared to the old art work. how much better are the cards? is it marginal and some improvement or is it easily a few points higher out of 10 of gameplay?

Not a completionist, are the hero boxes without the campaign boxes useful?

I am very theme dependent in my interests. I recently got the saga trilogy boxes, rohirim starter deck bc I love Rohan, dark of Mirkwood, angmar heroes and elves starter deck bc my wife loves Arwen and elves.

I saw in the other thread about the starter deck people were really pushing having everything for deck building. do the campaign boxes have cards that expand deck building?

I could see myself getting the last 2 hero boxes if they stay available for a few months but I really don’t have an interest in further quests beyond the book trilogy.

Would you be house poor and refuse all wants to get a nice house?

sanity check please - the below post has dozens of people telling me my wife is right, and we should just get the new house when we physically don’t have the money available for the monthly payments. So many people are concerned with scraping together a down payment but ignore the monthly payments, or telling me ways to save a larger down payment to bring down the monthly payments. Almost no one is paying attention to my wife being so extreme she won’t buy lotion and is returning a pregnancy pillow

Wife views a good house as a necessity and any use of money when you don’t have one is irresponsible. I think it’s an income problem not a problem savings can solve so want to enjoy the money we do make.

We each have a very comfortable career but we both work for the govt with high benefits and lower pay. Neither one of us has to worry about healthcare or retirement, but our combined income is $135k for 2 decently prestigious careers. We also easily meet our savings goals for our children.

At the end of the month we have about $2,500-$3,000 left over, but the average house in our city is $580,000.

To me, this puts a new home in our city so far out of our reach that even saving every penny of disposable income won’t get us into one of those houses. But to her, not having a house means you don’t have money for other things. It’s a moral judgement she just can’t view differently.

I checked and ran an amortization table, it would take us 6 years of spending no disposable income and investing it in low risk vehicles to get a house in our city at today’s prices, but bc the homes will appreciate, we actually wouldn’t catch up until part way through year 10.

It’s so bad that she tells me not to buy such small insignificant things like body lotion or a pregnancy pillow.

Again this is a moral belief tied to what is responsibly using money and how saving acquires you a house so I just have gotten nowhere in trying to explain how we can live very comfortably or be hermits in lock down and still not get a new house.

Because it will probably be asked, neither one of us is willing to leave our jobs. She has her dream job she wanted since a teen, and I struggled for years and dealt with a lot of abusive workplaces to finally get a job like I have now. We both have recession proof jobs that love to retain people until retirement. It’s just an expensive city in a state that is one of the worst for COL to Income and interest rates are too damn high!

tldr - differing views on using disposable income v. saving for a home in a high-cost-of-living area

**3 repeated things I notice that would help people noting**

  1. monthly payment for 580k is 3,800/m at the lowest possible tax assessment and insurance which we just don’t have the cash flow for
  2. childcare is costly, after care for the 3 older kids is 1,350 and childcare for the baby will be a little more than 1,200.
  3. prejudice aside for status of a mobile home peoples comments lead me to believe they don’t have an accurate picture of what they are. We have 4 BR, 2 full baths, 2,000 sq feet, and the lot size is bigger than the new developments. There is more space between us and neighbors than if we were in the new development.

I bought that Sinister Motives box on sale on December 26th 2024, and was blissfully unaware of the stock issues I was getting into…

I got pretty lucky with this game, but I’m still offended by the anti consumer practice, and it’s not said enough how abysmal the new player experience in the game is.

I don’t want to carry on too much, but there is one very specific thing I want to share, and it’s the very poor planning / timing of this game hitting mainstream and the decision not to reprint product.

I lurk here and see many comments about how old the game is, but I and many never knew the game existed until 2024. Then I recently saw that the game had a large wave of fans discover it in 2024 and everything started selling out.

So I wanted to share, I discovered Marvel Champions in November 2024 from a Target holiday ad and it started showing up on my Amazon feed that same time. everything you see pictured + Cyclops, Storm, Gamora, Starlord, Hulk is from that Christmas. When I saw I got it, I immediately bought sinister motives and grew goblin bc Spider-Man is my favorite.

But then almost immediately things started going out of stock and so haven‘t purchased anything else for the game until Fear no Evil for Daredevil.

For whatever reason Holiday 2024 the game got put in circulars and mainstream advertising and it’s just dumb that, that move didn’t coincide with reprints.

**edit** I get a weekend day about every 6 weeks. So about 8 leisure days a year with no chore or responsible for kids and I have other hobbies. I also at the time, I really wanted to play in release order. I have since given that up. All the heroes are open just not the boxes.

College educated and I am having my 4th kid with a career woman, and our careers were never the hurdle

It’s all about what you value and feel emotionally.

People do things that they emotionally want. We aren’t magical perfectly rational beings. If we emotionally want something we will make it happen. And our emotions are influenced by others, media, and status which is why I care about the culture side of natalism.

Most things I hear from people about not having kids sound like excuses or fears from other people constantly stating their excuses. I do not think it’s universal that women hate children and view them as parasites that reduce their material conditions. I think that is an outset of a culture that thinks pursuing maximal material comfort is the ultimate good, thus anything that reduces that ultimate good is obviously a force of bad.

If we teach women their identity comes from their career, everything else that requires time or effort and isn’t a transactional trade that benefits her material status is obviously a handicap. The only problem being we don’t just experience life materially.

This to me is so easy to see when there are other networks of status and sources of value other than material, like psychological, fulfillment, joy, or esteem.

My wife and I don’t always have fun / leisure and material luxury, but we always have joy, esteem, and fulfillment.

My wife is a career woman through and through with excellent achievements.  She is exceptional at her job, works in natal care for 2 hospitals, she trains and teaches medical professionals and students. (and is always there, her identity is a person who is always available, but not a title, it’s about her identity in relationships to other people, and that’s even stronger for her personal relationships). She also truly adores families and children and surrounded by it at work (this is key), but after our 1st child discovered she does not personally like being home with children and doesn’t have the patience or temperament for it.

This didn’t become a huge problem bc she still wanted more kids, liked being pregnant, and I was willing to make changes for a  period until all the kids started school.

So I stayed home with the kids. I sold the little business I was establishing (had 17 monthly clients at the time) I stayed home, kept up with industry skills, worked remotely part time with a flexible schedule the last few years, and started back in my field last year.  And I can report this was easily doable. It’s not a terrible fate to delay career progression.

I have less salary than if I worked all through my 30s, but I still got the industry and designation I wanted for myself. I have a decently prestigious job that is just govt sector so lower pay and money but is higher level work and people leave in 2-5 years for private into a manager / executive role.

So I should be about 45 and get into executive level instead of at 35-40. So what was the real cost? Is it really terrible that my career kicked off at 40? Or that I’ll spend less time in management? So instead of management at 35 for 30 years and having kids later after that was established meaning 10 less years with my kids, I got 10 more years with my kids and will only spend 20 years in management? Done.

For my wife, to spite her not liking the child wrangling and entertaining, she remained open to kids and we found a way to do it. It’s really important to emphasize this happened bc she was open to children and family, and doesn’t have any negative views on children, pregnancy, or marriage. See she could personally find young children difficult and stressful or being home and not working anxiety inducing to her, yet not be slowed down or greatly impacted bc her overall view of family is wonderful.

Now we are having our 4th kid instead of stopping at 1.

I’ll also note, these values are something she had to have for me to view her as a quality partner and want to marry her. Too often I see it framed as men aren’t good enough for women to marry and have kids with. Not only is that misandry but women need to be emotionally attractive to men who want to be husbands and fathers.

I hope my personal anecdote shows Women working, or being intelligent isn’t the problem, people who hate children and hate marriage is a problem bc it’s a malignant position that should be viewed like other bigotry and is a perspective typically taught to women more than men so women get criticized for it.

When people point out education reduces family size they aren’t jumping right to intelligence. We literally mean the structure of educating our people is flawed. Both my wife and I have stem degrees and both think college is a joke. Full time technical schools that get done in a fraction of the time could be the norm. Wasting your populations 20s on irrelevant training that isn’t tied to an actual career waiting for them is a joke system. And teaching them this is the height of their identity and a masterful achievement naturally reduces all other priorities and makes things that require time and effort away from careerism antagonistic.

We were able to overcome many obstacles in our personal life towards having a large family, but you can’t over come poor morals, culture, or hate. I think more people need to be honest about the anti family, marriage, and child bigotry that’s out there, and realize the criticism you see about modern women are blowback to this.

Some extremist woman will call or make the case that children are parasites, that marriage is an abusive institution, and men make women’s lives worse, which will get ignored by women, then the response to that obviously hyperbolic instigation gets pounced on.

I’m a man in a progressive arrangement who gave a very intelligent career minded woman the things she needed to have 4 kids, but I am still offended by that framing towards children and marriage, and this pervasive concept that everything is a material transaction that must be a gain for women. Relationships are emotional bonds that require conforming to the group you are cultivating and giving more than receiving.

We are in danger of working 55 hours a week from 14-72 if birthrates don’t improve.

we have a complex society. there is a lot of labor and productivity to produce the infrastructure, utilities, energy, goods, and especially healthcare we rely on.

there are a lot of people who visit this sub that don’t understand what the future is going to look like. less people does not mean the same society but a smaller number. Going from 100m to 50m with the same distribution of ages would be better than what’s going to happen.

the population is going to invert so the most populous age group is the elderly not in the workforce or maintaining the system. it will be an obelisk or inverted pyramid where less workers participate in the labor force to produce the needs of the majority.

today 2-3 people work for every person not in the labor force. notice how bad things already feel? it used to be 6-7 laborers for the elderly.

we have 3 levers that affect the production of things we need, number of workers, efficiency / productivity, and hours worked. the 40 hour work week isn’t just a union victory or Henry ford victory it was the increase in laborers and technological innovation.

now 2 of those levers are going down. less workers will be alive and innovation has been going down for decades.

the last lever is hours worked. and the people who are concerned with demography but not social issues plan to solve this with hours worked. they view 55 hour work weeks and expanded working age from 14-72 as just a matter of fact.

the other option is global Detroit and all those towns that where bypassed by a highway system. so they aren’t wrong that this will happen. but I don’t like that being viewed as a solution or answer.

I would much rather have the unpopular discussions about culture, society, and marriage.

some other things to consider, this all snowballs. a smaller society works more which then produces less children which work more. it takes decades to happen because the event occurs a generation after the birthrate problem, but then all the bad stuff happens at once. China is expected to have a population of 470m in 2100. Taiwan, South Korea, Italy, and Spain won’t even exist as the nations they do now.

majority of countries in the world have birthrates below 1.9, some policies have increased that rate in the past but not for long and those policies have been very unpopular with westerners. 46 countries have a birthrate below 1.5 and no country has ever increased their birthrate at that point. once a country goes to 1 like China, Italy, Spain, S Korea, they aren’t expected to survive.

the conversations in this sub need to be serious and need to be truly academic in their ability to be open and include everything. bc the result is 55 hour work weeks for less pay and no more social mobility since credit will freeze, failed health care, competency crisis, disappearing infrastructure and utilities. one day you will turn the faucet and water won’t come out or flip a switch and no light will turn on. people may even be pressure to euthanize themselves in elder care and they won’t have a spouse or child to resist that pressure. do you really want that to happen bc you wouldn’t allow discussion of what is happening?

I call myself a liberal, but I thought that meant loving humanity, life, prosperity, and security, not this endless I do what ever I want, I get mine, fuck the world mentality that is constantly on display here.

Mods are you still here? Can we get a notice of your activity?

this sub appears over run to many of us. can you post and let us know you are here and just disagree with all the reporting we are doing? we have nonstop anti birth , anti pregnancy, anti child, and pro child free comments bc we keep getting pushed to all and nothing is getting removed.

or are you really absent and given up on the sub?

What’s the best modern choice for kids? I want my kids to start karate but the only options are MMA or Villari kempo?

I want them to get more than just a combat sport. I want to follow the tradition and learn memory, focus, patience with katas. I want them to be disciplined and ok with stillness or boredom. I know villari has katas but has a reputation for rushing through training to keep interest with belt advancement.

what are your thoughts? And what order would you choose For kids? I think my order is traditional Okinawa karate > taekwon > judo > maybe even tai chi before American karate > then mma

I grew up in FL going to the theme parks and ai just cannot get my head around Epic being busier during the week than the weekends?

I honestly feel like its mass delusion or troll. every other park you can barely fit a stroller through if you go on the weekend, while during the weekday you could be there during field trip day and still have a nice casual stroll around the park.

why would this one park be so different from the other 10?

I made the $2 emergency meal and it was honestly one of the best things I have ever eaten! Thank you.

I added a splash of left over chicken broth and 3 strips of bacon I already had. I tossed a few of the chopped onions, bacon, at the end the spices into oil to turn up the spices then mixed in the beans and potatoes to stew for a bit.

the blend of flavors is incredible.

I didn’t have previous experience with pinto beans so I got a new food now.

**edit- posting recipe since this has so many views people who didn’t see the original video are now seeing this post.** **Chopped onions, tomato, and jalapeño raw.**

**Heat a dash of the onions with a little chopped bacon, bloom some of the spices for a minute, stir in pinto beans and potatoes to stew for at least 20 minutes. (Pre cook potato’s if using canned beans, I boiled my potatoes 3 minutes).**

**Served beans over the raw vegetables. I also added a dash of chicken broth bc I wanted more broth.**

**my spice blend was equal parts garlic, paprika, cumin, then pepper, salt, dash of pepper flakes.**

This family size bowl cost $5 and offers 4-5 servings.

By itself this is 2-3 lunches, maybe 4 with pitas. I can also serve it to my family of 5 with about $10-15 of baked white fish! (with leftovers)

Mixing quinoa with lentils does a lot of the heavy lifting for calories and protein while everything else is enough for taste and accents. All the ingredients cost about $25-$30 to buy but don’t use up all of anything. the cost in the title is per the portions taken from everything.

I also only use homemade dressing which is cheaper and better for you than store bought.

not pictured is sunflower seeds and salted cucumbers some of us top with. saving money replacing meat and hopefully fighting early hyper tension.
