Installer just sits at splash screen forever

Thought I'd try Pop_OS on an underpowered Dell 3190. It has been sitting at the splash screen for 2 hours with no further movement. I've tried it with Legacy boot and UEFI boot, same result. What is going on?

"timeout or network connection error" Help?

I'm trying to "deny" a certain domain from the permitted domains list. Every time I click the "deny" button, I get a "timeout or network connection error". Can anyone help?

boasting about my $2 pihole machine

I started using pihole about 6 months ago. Because I wasn't certain if it would work for me, I put it on a Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny I had lying around. That's really an overkill machine for pihole and I had other uses for it, so I started looking for something else to put pihole on.

I was at a garage sale today and found a Dell Wyse 3040 Thin Client for $2!! And it included a wired keyboard and mouse! A quick Internet search told me that pihole on a thin client was doable, although the 3040 had some specific quirks. It's up and running now and I want to boast about my $2 pihole machine!

"Mobile Workstation" for lightish gaming?

For the sorts of games I play, any dedicated GPU is way better than integrated graphics. Cheap laptops with dedicated GPU aren't easy to come by, and when you put "gaming" in the model name, prices jump.

Then I found a Dell Refurbished Precision 3480. Under $500 with an i5-1350P, and under $600 with an i7-1355U. Either way you get a Nvidia RTX A500 (4 GB) GPU. What would this be like for light gaming?

n00b q. What's the best place for the engine?

Forgive me, but most kei trucks seem about the same to me except for the placement of the engine. Some are under the seats and some are under the tray. It feels like the engine under the tray would be easier to work on, but what are the other advantages and disadvantages of the various engine placements?

Mint/Cinnamon in 16GB? YES!

TL;DR You can do a full Mint Cinnamon install on a 16GB drive.

I picked up an HP t740 Thin Client that I may want to repurpose. As a Thin Client, it only came with 16GB of storage. I wanted to run some testing to see if the machine would suit my purpose. To my pleasant surprise, I did a full Mint/Cinnamon install and even after updates, I still have 5.5GB free.

m.2 eMMC vs. m.2 nvme

I have an HP t740 thin client. The m.2 slot is labeled "eMMC/nvme". The slot currently contains a 2230 drive which the OS identifies as a 16GB eMMC drive.

I would like to put this eMMC drive into a different computer which is only labeled to accept an nvme drive. Is this possible? Are m.2 eMMC drives effectively the same as m.2 nvme drives? (aside from using different sorts of chips, that is) Thanks.

Passport card is/is not a RealID?

Perhaps a dumb question, but Google is providing vague and ambiguous answers. What I know so far:

RealID can only be issued by a state government.
A passport card, being issued by the US government (and not an individual state government) is therefore NOT a RealID.
The TSA is super vague. They say you must have a RealID to pass through TSA security for flights at domestic airports. But then they go on to say that a Passport Card is an acceptable form of identification at security.

What's the real answer here?

Realtek RTL8153 USB -> ethernet adapter ok?

I've done Mint installs on several Mac Minis, with a native Ethernet port.

I'm about to embark on my first Mint install on a 2015 MacBook Pro that doesn't have a native Ethernet port. All signs indicate that getting MacBook wifi to work on install are impossible. I have a USB 3.0 to Ethernet adapter that uses the Realtek RTL8153 chipset. Will this be suitable? Thanks.

Transporting a 5th wheel 500 miles without a truck

I need to move a 28' 5th wheel about 500 miles. I don't own a suitable truck and I can't find a place that would rent me one. Would a "hotshot" driver do this, or who could I find for this task?

Follow up on Latitude 3190 with stuck BIOS update

Previous post: my 3190 was stuck in the midst of a BIOS update and I couldn't turn it off. I left it running until the battery died. Then I plugged it in and just let it boot. The BIOS has actually finished updating and now the system runs fine.

Thanks for all your help. This is the best $15 computer I've ever purchased! :D

Latitude 3190 BIOS update stuck

As per the post title, picked up a 3190 for fifteen bucks. No OS installed. Downloaded the latest BIOS from Dell and attempted to install from the "BIOS Update" function of the start menu. Been stuck at 100% for hours.

Most of the advice I found online is for the windows BIOS updater, not the native one. The laptop won't shut down with the power button, either.

The next move I can consider is unplugging the charger and letting the battery (eventually) go dead and shut down the system. Or is there something else I should try 1st?

PCIe x1 to USB-C with PD?

does it exist? is it even possible to exist? I know the x1 won't allow for super-fast data transfer, but I'd still like to be able to transfer files to my desktop while fast charging. Thank you.

I'm "eligible to bid" LOL

I fly Frontier somewhat regularly LAS-DEN. It's a 2 hour flight. I don't ever pay for a seat; don't care if I get stuck in the middle.

Now I get an email a few days before my flight that they're allowing me to bid on a seat upgrade. How thoughtful of them. Have you ever bid? what's the least you've gotten a seat upgrade for. I'm tempted to bid $2

MacBook Air 11" 2014

I like very small laptops for certain uses. I have an opportunity to buy a 2014 MacBook Air 11 with i7/8GB. I have successfully installed Mint/Cinnamon on several Mac Minis, but I want to make certain that the added features of the MacBook, such as microphone and webcam, will also work with a regular installation, and without much fuss. Or if there's a better distro, please advise. Thanks.

Follow-up on Post Office application, with a vent

I wrote recently about my anxiety regarding my Post Office application. Well my anxiety turned to anger because there were three of us waiting for our appointments when a regular clerk told us that the clerk who processed passports wasn't coming to work today. Somehow they can send text messages and email confirming your appointment, but they can't send an email cancelling your appointment when the clerk doesn't show up for work.

The regular postal clerk told us to try going to City Hall, where they have walk-in passport processing. It was only a mile away, so I went. I only waited about 15 minutes to get walk in service, and when I met with the City Clerk, she told me that at least half of the people that came to her window on a daily basis were folks who came directly from the Post Office, because apparently the one clerk at that Post office who can process passports rarely shows up to work. Where can I get a job like that?

But the process was smooth and fast and it only cost $1 more than it would have at the Post Office, because City Hall charges $1 to accept credit/debit cards for their $35 fee. I guess I'll find out in 4-6 weeks if it worked.

Thank you for letting me vent.

What actually happens at the Post Office (US)?

This is probably going to sound ridiculous, but I'm a person who gets really anxious in new/unknown situations. My appointment is Wednesday. Can someone please tell me exactly what happens? Do I go to the regular mail counter, or is there someplace else I'm supposed to go to? Does the clerk ask any questions, or just review my documents? If I get rejected, do I have to start from scratch? Thank you.

xfce vs cinnamon on this laptop?

Dell Latitude 3380

i3-6006u cpu

4GB DDR4 (might upgrade to 8GB, only 1 slot)

128GB 2.5" SATA SSD

I've used cinnamon a lot and I'm comfortable with it; I've never used xfce. The hardware seems to be at the low end of what is recommended for cinnamon. Can someone please advise on the pros and cons of either choice on this hardware? Thanks.

B/C copy for application. B&W or color?

A copy of the Birth Certificate is required for the original passport application.

The original document is printed in color.

Must a color copy be submitted, or is a B&W copy acceptable?

Thank you.
