Beginner : what do you actually say/do while dancing with your partner?

I'm a total beginner in bachata (a few weeks in).

During the actual dance I have no idea what I'm supposed to say or do besides the footwork.

Do you make small talk the whole time? Do experienced dancers just stay quiet and focus on the connection? I feel a bit awkward not knowing whether silence is normal or if I'm missing something.

Would love to hear how you handle this, especially early on, did it get more natural with time?

Grosse fatigue le lendemain d'un jogging

Bonjour,

Running 10 km starting from Grünerløkka

Hi,

I am looking for a safe place to run starting from Grünerløkka for at least 5-10 km.

I live in this district since a month, while I enjoy this place, I noticed it s also a bit difficult to run "safely" in this place.

Lot of people on the sidewalk, cars, redlight... I often have to stop my run for a few seconds.

So I am curious, is there any people in this case and in which direct would you go to run "safely" ?

PS : I start from there (black cross) :

Bench press program and progression

Hi everyone,

I'd really like a name program that focuses on strength with two or three bench sessions per week and rather long rep ranges, between eight and fifteen.

Some context : I've been training for 15 years with no breaks, 4-5 sessions per week. My goal was purely aesthetic for a long time, but for the past few years I've been focused on improving my bench press. My current 1RM is 120 kg at 70 kg bodyweight.

I'm also fairly active outside the gym, 2 cardio sessions per week and around 2 hours of walking daily.

I'm not looking to increase calories or gain weight, even though I know it would help my bench. That's a constraint I'm keeping for now.

I ran Wendler 5/3/1 for about a year, saw some progress initially, but I've been stalling for a while and recently started failing reps I used to hit comfortably.

Any program recommendations ?

Quiet 2 vs Dreams — help me choose for sleep & noise blocking

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for advice between the Quiet 2 and the Dreams.

My situation: I live in a city center and noise from the street (people talking loudly at night) regularly disrupts my sleep. I'm looking for the best passive + active noise reduction I can get, purely for sleeping.

My experience so far: I used the Quiet 2 for several months and was fairly happy with them. My main frustration was that most replacement ear tip sizes were consistently out of stock. At the end, I lost one earplug and had to stop using them altogether since I couldn't replace it.

My criteria :

  • Sleep only
  • Maximum noise reduction
  • Easy access to replacement ear tips

Has anyone compared both models on these specific points? Is the Dreams a meaningful upgrade over the Quiet 2 for noise blocking? And has the ear tip availability improved with the newer model?

Thanks in advance!

When is it okay to be transparent with a supplier about your dependency on them?

Hello,

I work in an industrial manufacturing environment where some components require years-long qualification processes. Switching suppliers isn't really an option in the short term, you're locked in whether you like it or not.

Recently, we had an issue securing a critical component needed for an upcoming project. Our relationship with this supplier isn't great, in addition the supplier took a long time to respond to my request about the product, the situation was very tricky because the supplier already knows he has a high power on us.

What surprised me was how my manager's manager handled it: he was completely upfront with the supplier, openly acknowledging that we were highly dependent on their product for this specific project, asking the supplier to provide a quote asap.

My manager when he was speaking with the supplier : "To be frank with you, if we had the option, we would have gone with a different supplier. But for this project, our customer specifically requested your product — or something of equivalent quality — and we simply couldn't find an alternative. Not securing your product on time could cost us millions in delay penalties. Please confirm if you can meet or not our needs"

My gut reaction was that you should never show your cards like that, revealing dependency basically hands all the leverage to the other side.

But maybe I'm wrong. It got me thinking:

At what point does transparency about supplier dependency actually make sense as a strategy? Is it ever a power move? Does it build trust, or does it just get exploited?

Curious to hear from people in procurement, supply chain, or anyone who's been on either side of this dynamic.

High-interest savings accounts in Norway — recommendations?

Hey,

I've heard that some banks in Norway offer savings accounts with interest rates around 5–6%, which is significantly higher than what I'm currently getting (around 3% with sparebank).

I'm looking for a place to park my emergency fund, money I don't plan to touch unless something goes wrong (job loss, unexpected expenses, etc.). No real estate projects on the horizon, so I just want it sitting somewhere safe and earning as much interest as possible.

A few questions:

  1. Which banks or accounts would you recommend for high-interest savings in Norway right now?
  2. Is there a catch? 5–6% sounds almost too good.
  3. Are these accounts safe? I'm assuming they're covered by the Norwegian deposit guarantee (up to 2M NOK), but wanted to confirm.

Thanks

Supplier acting unprofessionally in a tight market — how would you handle this?

Hi everyone,

I'm dealing with a supplier who has been behaving increasingly unprofessionally, and I'd love some outside perspective.

Context: We source a highly specialized product with roughly 8 suppliers worldwide, half from China, the rest being premium-quality players in very high demand. From the 1970s to around 2022, competition among suppliers was fierce and prices were low. Then came the AI/data center boom, and everything flipped: demand exploded and these suppliers now hold serious pricing power.

The relationship history: The relationship with this particular supplier was already complicated before I took over. My predecessor apparently didn't anticipate how the AI boom would shift the balance of power. The supplier even proposed a long-term supply agreement to secure volumes, which my company turned down. That decision is now coming back to haunt us.

Recent behavior: Over the past year or so, this supplier has been clearly leveraging his strong negotiating position (hard to compete when your other customers are Meta, Nvidia, and Amazon):

  • Significant price increases
  • Slow responses to RFQs
  • Condescending remarks such as "How much are you willing to pay?", "Without us, you're nothing", and "You should have signed the contract I'd fire whoever rejected it if I were you"

Yesterday's meeting: We have an important ongoing project requiring three product lines (A, B, C) from this supplier. I had already secured alternatives for A and C, and had a competing quote for B — though our internal client specifically wants this supplier's version of B. Since he took two months to respond to my RFQ, I told him upfront I was only interested in A and B. He then stated: "It's all three or nothing" and added "I'm a strategic supplier, you owe me respect. I was certain you'd take everything."

What's puzzling me: I'm not sure whether this is a negotiating tactic or something more personal. He's retiring in a few months, and I recently learned he's dealing with a personal loss. That might explain some of the erratic behavior but it doesn't make it acceptable.

Next step: I've escalated internally and have a meeting scheduled with my top management and this supplier next Friday. In the meantime, I'm working on securing an alternative source for product B. I also know his successor — and I'm wondering whether I should invite them to that meeting as well.

My question: How would you approach this situation? Is the "all or nothing" stance a common power play, or is something else going on? And how do you maintain a working relationship with a supplier when the power dynamic is this skewed?

Thanks in advance.

Looking for private salsa lessons in Oslo

Hi everyone,

I recently started learning salsa and have been attending beginner group classes for a few weeks. I’m really enjoying it, but the classes are quite large, so it’s a bit difficult to get detailed feedback and improve quickly.

I’d like to complement this with a few private lessons to work on fundamentals like timing, basic steps, and connection.

Does anyone have recommendations for:

  • Private instructors in Oslo
  • Dance schools offering 1-on-1 lessons
  • Or even experienced dancers who teach on the side

Thanks a lot in advance

How did you learn dancing as a complete beginner?

Hey everyone, I just started learning salsa a few weeks ago and I'm curious how others got into it.

Currently I'm attending beginner workshops, about 1–2 hours per week. The issue is the classes are pretty large (around 40 people, mixed leads and follows) with only two instructors.

They show us a few basic steps, then we rotate partners. It's a bit hard to get proper feedback or really progress with that many people.

So I'd love to hear your experiences, how did you learn? Did you stick with group classes, go private, use YouTube, just go social dancing? What made the biggest difference for you early on?

What time do Rema 1000 / Extra put discounted near-expiry products out?

Hi everyone!

I've noticed that both Rema 1000 and Extra have a section with discounted products nearing their expiry date.

Does anyone know what time they typically restock that section? Is it more of a morning or evening thing?

Thanks!

Saving food - Grünerløkka - Oslo

Hi everyone,

I live in Oslo, close to Grünerløkka.

I’m trying to save money on food, so I avoid processed products (sport diet).

I mainly eat simple things like chicken, red meat, pasta, rice, oats, eggs, and I try to vary with fruits and vegetables (around 4.500 NOK per month).

Right now, I use an app to check promotions in different stores (Rema, Extra, Coop, Kiwi), and I usually buy in bulk and freeze what I can.

Still, I feel like I could optimize more, so I was wondering if you have any tips that helped you reduce your grocery budget?

Thanks a lot

Skatteetaten PAYE exit issue – anyone successfully appealed afterward?

Hello,

I moved to Norway at the beginning of March 2025 and was initially registered under the PAYE (Pay As You Earn) scheme for 2025.

As I hold foreign stocks, I was concerned a few weeks ago about not receiving any guidance or documentation regarding how to declare these assets. I contacted the tax authorities, and over the phone I was advised to opt out of the PAYE scheme in order to be able to properly report my shares. I followed this advice and exited the PAYE scheme for 2025.

However, I have now received a tax assessment showing that I owe approximately 10,000 NOK. I believe this may be related to my exit from the PAYE scheme.

I have contacted Skatteetaten several times by phone but received the same response that they cannot do anything. I have also sent multiple messages without receiving a reply. The payment deadline is the 19th, and I’m trying to understand my options.

Has anyone been in a similar situation after leaving the PAYE scheme? Is it possible to appeal or submit a correction after receiving the assessment?

Hi everyone,

I recently moved to Oslo and I’m looking to meet people and build a social life here.

I’m a 32-year-old guy, really into sports and staying active. I know it can take time to meet people in Norway, so I’m trying to be proactive about it.

In a couple of weeks (June), I’m planning to start a few activities like:

  • joining group runs via Strava
  • taking dance classes
  • attending events where I can practice Norwegian (I’ve been learning remotely in classes for about 6 months)

I’m still settling in and dealing with some admin stuff, but I’d love to start meeting people soon.

For other expats (or locals):
what helped you the most to build a social life here?
Any activities, events, communities, or tips you’d recommend?

I already have a small plan, but I’m very open to suggestions!

Hi everyone,

I recently moved to an apartment and there is this smoke alarm :

BRK model DSB 225-144, photoelectric

I checked it, and when I looked at the base mounted on the ceiling, I noticed an orange wire just hanging loose with nothing connected to it.

The label on the back of the detector shows:

- Brown = Line (power)

- Blue = Neutral

- Orange = Interconnect

From what I understand, the orange wire is used to link multiple smoke alarms together so they all go off at the same time. Since I only have one alarm in my home, I'm guessing this wire just has nothing to connect to.

My questions are:

  1. Is it normal for the orange wire to hang loose if you only have one alarm?

  2. Is there any risk leaving it as is?
