Feeling Down I need to pull back on investments for the time being

It happened. Middle class inflation and cost increases, child care changed, Lupus,
multiple sudden major house maintenance items finally caught up to my family’s stagnant income.

For the time being I think we are going to have to pull back on maxing my 401k to just meeting the match to catch up with all the issues that have come up.

In order to replenish the reserves so another major house item doesn’t cripple my family we will need to pull back on investments and that really bums me out.

Anyone else going through this right now and can relate?

Crack in Exterior Foundation.

I noticed this crack in my foundation with a solid chunk at the top missing. The hole itself is not deep up top and there is no interior crack or water intrusion evident from the inside. I walked the rest of the property and there are no other exterior cracks.

I have no idea how long this has been like this , it’s tucked behind a tree I never crawl behind.

Is this call a structural engineer first? Or is this a fill/seal and monitor situation?

Side note; is this a “parge coat” of some sort over the actual slab foundation ( it’s poured concrete )

Smell In Living Room. Puzzled

I have what I would describe as a faint sour smell I only smell in my living room.

The smell is not present in the basement below, or in the bedrooms above . There is no bathroom/plumbing above or below.

I have a couch and throw rug in this room which I suspected but when I bury my nose into these surfaces the smell does not intensify or become noticeable.

At this point I am puzzled. My walls and ceiling show no signs of moisture ( no bumbling or peeling paint, no splotchiness, no signs of water).

My wife says she can not smell it, but I do, and it’s only in this room.

Any additional tips on what it might be/what to look for?

Staff Employment

Looking for opinions from current staff members. I received an offer on the table to join Princeton in FP&A and am comparing with another non academic role offer I have.

From current staff perspective, how’s the current feeling internally? How’s the culture? Do staff roles have hybrid work arrangements or is it full time in person?

Cleaning Brick

I am in the process of improving my drainage and grade, but am looking for advice on how to best clean this area of brick without damaging the brick.

What type of cleaner/brush is best.

Is the black a mold, or more likely caked dirt/mulch backsplash?

Dehumidifier Newbie

I bought a dehumidifier earlier this week and have been running it in my basement non stop after realizing the humidity was quite high.

I plan on hooking it up to auto drain eventually but for now I am manually draining it when full, I work from home so it’s really not a problem right now. I was also more curious to see how much it filled up.

This thing is filling up 3 times a day ( probably dumping 15-20 pints manually) I’ve never had a clear water issue in my basement, but clearly the humidity is super high.

The dehumidifier however is struggling to drop the area below 55 humidity. Clearly it’s working given the amount of water coming out, but do most people struggle to drop below these levels in the summer?

Moisture Meter

I have this whole corner of my drywall ( about 1 foot from the corner on both sides) which is bone dry to the touch, with no evidence of moisture but is lighting up the moisture meter to be red.

Is this thing worthless? I would preferred not to open a whole wall for no reason.

Safe Range of Drywall Moisture reading?

Hi All-

I am trying to figure out what a safe range for drywall moisture readings are. I keep finding conflicting info online.

Is there a recommended range that is considered normal or safe? Obviously the lower the better but trying to figure out what’s actually appropriate

What causes small dents like this in foundation.

Please ignore the caulk I put at the center just to prevent any additional moisture seepage last night before I got to Home Depot to get the right materials for the repair.

Is this just what happens with weather damage on a 40-50 year old slab? Also is this the actual painted cement or is this like a parge coat?

The center hole is not that deep but I just put the caulk in there for a one night stopgap in a rain storm.

Bumps on Foundation Wall?

I saw these few bumps on the foundation wall today. Are these purely cosmetic? The rest of the wall looks even .I have no idea if they’ve been here . I’ve never looked at this section of the wall before like this so it’s possible they have been here.

Low CH50??

Does anyone here have Low CH50?

Had my quarterly labs come back and seeing CH50 low ( I’ve had it low before, and it was never noted as important). Does anyone else have low CH50?

Of note my ESR/CRP is 1 each, cbc/cmp normal. And I feel great with no physical signs of flairs

Floor Match?

I have this type of hardwood flooring on my first floor and want to add to my second floor. Obviously the stain match would be challenging, but any guesses on what style wood I am looking at as a similar board type. I bought the house and there were no stock left in the house.
