Plus they're a really sick visual indicator of both how disheveled Max is by this entry and of his emotions/physical state of being in a non-verbal way (like he stumbles slightly and the camera flashes like his head just stung or he pops painkillers and 3 mirror images of him fade in next to him because of the hazy way those feel and things like that)

If I ever make a game/a movie and I have the budget for it I'm definitely taking heavy inspiration from 3's visual style

Now, yeah, I'm aware of Jacket's background in the Ghost Wolves, his elite training, etc, but if we're talking purely what either character DOES I think The Son is significantly more skilled than Jacket

While Jacket's obviously got the highest killcount of any character in the series, he achieves that count over the course of a full game, and every level in said game has significantly fewer enemies in each building, is much more close quarters, and guns are rarer overall which is even more beneficial to Jacket as he seems to prefer melee weapons to guns anyway-on top of all that he spends most of the game sober, unlike The Son-the craziest thing he pulls off is waking up from a coma and immediately slaughtering 49 cops in a police station in the same day, but even that's less than The Son gunning up an entire fucking mansion near-singlehandedly

The Son manages to kill the second most enemies out of any character in the series in 4 LEVELS by comparison, every level being packed with significantly more enemies on average, said enemies having more guns among them, and the whole time he's probably at least tippsy on pills, especially when he kills all 5 of the military-trained Fans by himself while just about overdosing on the things and with (at least going off what's shown in-game) zero professional combat training of his own (asside from with his katana since he does use an actual technique with it)-on top of that he's by far the most versatile single character in the series playstyle-wise, condensing either Corey's dodgeroll, Tony's killing punches or Mark's dual-MP5Ks into one person. He also completely stamps out the Columbian mafia over the course of a SINGLE MONTH whereas Jacket took out MOST but not all of the Russian mafia over the course of multiple (and in both cases there were other people backing them up the whole time, albeit Jacket wasn't actively working with/was really aware of the others, so that aspect isn't really a slight against The Son either)

On top of ALL THAT it's widely held Jacket lost the Phonehom fight with Biker despite Biker's similar lack of military experience or training (again to our knowledge) and only survived based on pure willpower, so Jacket is in fact susceptible to getting his ass kicked by people with no combat training despite being an ex-special operative

(Also to clarify I'm also drawing the connection because Russian criminals are very commonplace in John Wick and John Wick has the same heroic bloodshed neo-noir themes with neon lights out the ass as Hotline Miami+the top-down scene from 4 which is at least indirectly inspired by Hotline Miami since The Hong Kong Massacre [what its actually based on] is, which makes me think it's possibly deliberate lol)
