Things Not Explained in the Season 2 Anime

Disclaimer after finishing season 2 I am going to start the Manga, but it is a shame because the anime is well animated imo and has great voice actors. I started season 3 and I am so lost it does not seem like a continuation from season 2 at all.

The anime shows Hide as a delivery guy one day then a CCG worker in the final battle with no explanation of him joining. Seidou was talking to Hide literally 1-2 eps before the final battle and Hide was still not with the CCG. So the CCG hired Hide and sent him to battle a week later like ?!?

The formal announcement that they know Kenaki is eyepatch is a 20 second newsclip there's no build up or anything to let the viewers know that Kenaki got found out. The only thing is that they looked into an organ transplant accident but at the time they didn't know ghouls could be made. Especially since in an episode AFTER the announcement came out the Owl questioned Juuzou and Shinohara and they were relatively clueless/not believing that it could be done.

Speaking of Hide again why did the CCG not interrogate him? He was Kenaki's best friend and you're expecting me a building of detectives didn't find it odd that around the time Kenaki showed up as eyepatch Hide started working with them and asking prying questions whenever he was in the building....then he gets accepted as a CCG agent just like that.

The anime sets up the fight between Shachi and Kenaki as being this huge sequence but does not give the viewer any back story at all to why Shachi is fighting Kenaki. It set up this fight like it had huge importance when there is zero backstory to it and then we never see Shachi again.

What am I missing?

Why do I feel dumb watching the anime? I pay attention to it and still get the 'What is even happening right now?' vibe.

I thought season 1 was pretty good (at least the first half) but towards the end I felt like there was a lot of backstory left out of the Aogiri Tree group, the Anteiku group, and the CCG. With the final battle I had no idea how did they all get there/know to get there? Also season one it didn't properly explain the kagune.

Season 2 it gets even worse with me thinking I missed an important plot point, only to rewind and the plot still does not make sense.

For example why did Sachi fight Kaneki? There was ZERO explanation at all.

I was floored when I found out the same studio that produced Naruto produced Tokyo Ghoul. How does Naruto get 1000 episodes but this anime gets so little that I feel like I am missing basic details to track what is going on and why it is going on.

Edit: Also it never shows how they found out Ken Kenaki was eyepatch!! The CCG just knows and it was on a news broadcast?!

Genuinely what is going on?

I am not trying to be mean and this is all just my opinion but I have noticed some behavior patterns within Danny.

One of which is his sense of grandeur. Like in my opinion he has to be the funniest, best, most impressive guy in the room. If people don't notice it, he will over explain how he is the best. Like repeating a joke many times or telling versus showing behavior. Like he tells people how great he is versus letting his actions speak for themself.

Hypocriticalness in the relationship. In my opinion based on what I saw Nia could say the sky is blue and he would refute her point. Nia could react to his behavior in a happy way and he would find an issue with it. She could react by shutting down and he would find an issue with it. She could react by setting a boundary and he would have an issue with it. No matter what she does it seems like there is no positive outcome. He gets fixated on her and her behavior versus his own. He flips it on her. Nia seems like she is in survival mode and always needs to focusing on regulating his behavior in my own opinion.

The eye tracking. Whenever he gets upset he cannot make eye contact with Nia his eyes track back and forth rapidly like he can't look at her. In my opinion and my own experience, I had two exes do the same thing and they were not great people.

This is all my opinion and I could be wrong but, What is going on?

Question about Kagune

I have only seen season 1 of the anime I have just started season 2 but I have a question about the Kagune that ghouls have.

Each ghoul's kagune seems to be different. Is power based on what kagune someone is born with? From the anime it seems atleast that some are born powerful and some are born weak. It seems that even with training, the weaker ghouls will always be weak based on what kagune they have. Is this true that no matter the amount of training you do it is your power is heavily based on what kagune you are born with?

Thoughts on Hitch?

Warning Spoilers for the series

I feel like Hitch is one of the most underrated characters in the series. At first, she kind of had this, non special quality about her. As you get to know her throughout the series you find out that she is acting average but actually has the capabilities and skills to be more. She just chooses not to. The people she lets in are the ones that see how special she really is.

She is kind of introduced in not the best way as she joins the MPs because she knows they are corrupt and she wants to benefit from what is going on. When Marlo voices he wants to stop the corruption I believe Hitch straight up laughs. But then as you get to know her I believe that is a front.

When Marlo wanted to join the survey corps she showed that she really cared and grown to like him. She feared for his safety and didn't want him to join. When Marlo was charging towards the beast titan he thought she was probably asleep in bed but instead she was up and worrying about him.

In season 4 it seemed like she knew her place. She did tasks as an MP without complaining or looking for a way to benefit from the corruptness the system. She talked for Annie for 4 years and kept Annie sane when Annie was in her coma.

I think that she was special enough to be able to critically think about the situation going on but not special enough to act on it. I guess an example would be how she helped Annie escape but then when Annie got reunited with the group they left Hitch alone.

Final thoughts:

I think Hitch was a lonely person because she never really let anyone in or see past her snarky behavior. She had too much self preservation to not want to fight or get involved yet she was smart enough to recognize who was in the right or wrong. Even in the end post rumbling she is seen with the Yeagerists and she is yawning. She is smart enough to not be a true believer but at the end of the day wants to be safe so plays into it. She has tons of empathy but is hesitant to show it.

What is your controversial attack on titan take?

I will go first I don't like Erwin.

I love to theorize about AoT or see things from a perspective that I have never thought about before so I wanted to open up a discussion to see what is everyone's' most controversial AoT take.

Two things can be true at once

It really does not have to be this person is 100% right over the other.

These are all just my opinion for example:

Janet was wrong in calling out Danny last season at the expense of Jasmine as both Jasmine and Melissa said it made them uncomfortable for Janet to speak about their trauma AND Danny can have issues.

Kristen can be blindly loyal and right about the meal train situation. Why did no one respond when Kristen said, "Well you guys are all Janet's friends any one of you guys could have added her to the group chat"

Brittany can be jealous of Nia and calling out Nia out of a jealous place and at the same time be right that the behavior Danny is displaying is concerning. (The main reason why I hint at Brittany being jealous of Nia is because Zach spoke up at the lunch saying Brittany has been on Nia's case and saying things behind her back. Usually Zach is honest and tries to be a good friend).

Louise is a mirror of Mikasa

Season 4 Spoilers

I think Louise is the representation of the worst parts of Mikasa and used not all the way but partly as a tool for Mikasa's character to develop.

In the Battle of Trost Louise admires Mikasa to the point where she becomes a scout. Mikasa had a heroic entrance where she not only takes down a huge abnormal titan in front of Louise but also puts the merchant Reeves in his place for blocking the gate with his cart of goods. How Louise idolized Mikasa in that moment was a parallel to how Eren saved Mikasa. Mikasa saving her life was the equivalent for Louise to how Eren wrapping his scarf around Mikasa felt like.

I think when Louise told Mikasa she became a scout due to seeing Mikasa save everyone that day it triggered something in Mikasa. As anyone who actually knows Mikasa knows she would not be flattered by it she would hate it. She has seen the horrors of war and never asked to be anyone's purpose. It reminded her of how Eren idolized the scouts as a kid especially when he saw them coming back from an expedition. Despite it being clear to everyone else the scouts have been through too much Eren and Louise still found the heroic nature to their despair.

When Louise was imprisoned her dedication to Mikasa was clearly depicted as a bad thing how she only wanted to get closer to Mikasa and Mikasa cut it off. It is a mirror of how we see Mikasa yearning for war to be over/Eren a lot in the sense of she does say all she wants is to be close to Eren/to go home.

Both Louise and Mikasa didn't follow their leaders fully Mikasa at first just followed her feelings and put Eren's safety above everything else. Mikasa was very dismissive of Louise in person and Louise still never faltered in how she idolized Mikasa. Similar to how Eren at times was dismissive towards Mikasa and it never changed how she felt deep down about him.

I think this is why Mikasa was so 'cruel' to Louise on her deathbed. As Louise reminded Mikasa of all the bad parts of her. Mikasa realized she had to move on from that side of her. Mikasa also realized although she had these 'bad qualities' in her they did not define her as they did Louise. Mikasa was able to grow and become more than her 'dedication to Eren'.

I feel as though Louise's character took all the 'bad qualities' of Mikasa's life and executed it different than how Mikasa had actually lived it. It made Mikasa reflect and put to rest her past.

What do you watch after this?

I have tried to watch anime after this but can't. Has any other anime gotten you out of the post AoT slump?

For record I have watched:

Death Note Naruto, Toradora!, Food Wars, Ao Haru Ride, and Studio Ghibili films.

I tried to pick up Banana Fish but just kept thinking back to AoT and stopped it.

Edit forgot to add I have watched Violet Evergarden too.

In honor of the 9 year anniversary of the episode Scream (Season 2 Episode 12) airing, what are your thoughts on it?

Spoilers for season 2

First and foremost the color palette was probably one of the best animation color palettes imaginable. This horrific battle going on and the pink and purple hues of the sunset with the purple field flowers were insanely good.

Hannes character arc was so sad. You could really tell not being able to save Carla has been at the forefront of his mind over the years. He had a special connection to Eren and Mikasa and what are the odds he gets his chance to in his eyes redeem himself and take out the titan that killed Carla, only to get eaten in front of Eren and Mikasa.

Ymir/Historia. It was really sad to see this arc end. I thought Historia was the most interesting during this time Ymir really brought out the best in herself. Their whole pushing eachother to live for themselves while still acting in the others' best interest was a great storyline.

Mikasa's confession I remember that this went viral on tumblr. It was a really big moment in the universe. Mikasa was the only one in that moment that I think could have snapped Eren out of his 'I haven't changed I will always be useless moment'. The way the animation changed where it showed all the scouts in danger and peril around them and zoned them out, to only show the lighting on Mikasa and Eren like they were in their own world was unreal. I think Mikasa thought they were going to die and she wanted to die in peace which is why she told Eren and confessed to Eren. I really think Eren rejected the kiss because that would be accepting death if he were to kiss her. Warning ending spoilers: >!Ironically enough the only time they kissed was when he accepted death and died.!<

Not Eren unleashing the power of his titan and that of a royal blood by doing something as idiotic (in the nicest way possible) as punching a titan and thinking he can do damage. It was truly in character. The end plot twist of him being able to control titans was unmatched.

The last shot of the episode just being a close up of the beast titan's face and someone emerging out of the nape with how little we knew about him was great foreshadowing of what was to come.

My two star review of Addicted to You by Krista and Becca Ritchie

The Romance

It just felt like Lily and Lo had zero chemistry. It felt like they got together just to be able to be self destructive and it be convenient for them.

They would not have gotten together at all if not for their shared knowledge of how addiction is like/growing up together. They had nothing in common. When Lo was hooking up with her it really seemed like he didn't even enjoy being with her, that it was a chore, and he had to do it. It was like the thing he had to do before he was able to drink.

Morally Grey Characters...that are just one dimensional

Lily

Every time something happened it felt like some sort of weird humble brag.

Lily explained how she used in the book an escortservice. Then proceeded to explain that the guys she hires are often happy because she is not their usual clientele. Uh what, No? Just because Lily is '20 and pretty' doesn't mean they want to do it. They are literally doing this work out of necessity. It felt really icky for Lily to paint it in a way that made it seem like she was not taking advantage of these workers.

I have zero idea why every character had to point out how skinny Lily was other than it trying to be some weird humble flex. Like Connor and Ryke both commented on how skinny she was before they even all became friends. That is not something people normally comment on especially when they do not know them. Lo said it multiple times too.

Lo

His blackouts were so triggering. Especially at the Halloween party where he put Lily in real danger and would not back down at all. He escalated the situation out of nothing. I get that it shows his addiction but it is one thing to self destruct in your addiction it is another to get others into it too. Instead of backing down he just got more and more aggressive.

Overall it was just the tell versus show of the characters that made it seem so one dimensional.

The Good

  • The world does seem like one of its own. It is really hard for authors to make a world their own and they succeded.
  • The part where Lily missed her sister's fashion show due to her addiction was a real spin. It felt like it actually captured what Lily was going through.
  • Rose and Connor seem interesting I would really like to read a book about them they seem more of finished characters than Lily and Lo do

Why does everyone hate this scene?

It is the scene where Eren breaks down to Armin in the finale, crying in the water over Mikasa after being punched in the face.

I was shocked when I found the discourse a lot of viewers had for this scene. When I saw Eren break down and cry after being seemingly vengeful and emotionless for season 4 I was relived.

I was like wow this is the same endearing idiot from season 1-3. (I use the term idiot in the nicest way possible). But it seemed like the old Eren in adult form. The idealistic, reckless, person that would fight to the death for his friends and what he believed in. The trying to do the most but at the very end of the day him being unsure/insecure about his abilities.

I was just so relived, yes the actions he did was unbelievably insane, but it felt like the old Eren was still there in some way.

Question about the rumbling?

To my knowledge, it was near impossible to survive the rumbling. You could not outrun the titans unless you had prior knowledge of the rumbling starting which no one really did. Even if you got on the boat, the titans could swim and crush you there too. The only way that seemed plausible was flying but no territory really had aircrafts.

My question is: to those who had basements do you think that they could survive the rumbling in the underground? I know the entrance/exit probably would have been caved in but there are entire underground cities, if the entrance/exit caved in there would probably be enough people and tools to get out.

Attack on Titan Tattoos?

Anyone have any ideas for AoT tattoos?

I originally was going to get "Dedicate your heart" tattooed on me. As it was kind of the scout mantra and I like the meaning behind it of giving everything your all and devoting yourself to something. However, in the finale I heard that the Yeagerists were using the mantra now and it kind of ruined the meaning for me.

I plan on doing a complete rewatch after I finish reading the manga to see if any other quote sticks out to me or idea.

Mice appeared out of nowhere?

I have lived in my apartment for 1.5 years and have NEVER seen any sign of mice or anything. For additional context I live on the fourth floor, which is the top floor.

Last month I saw a mouse in the morning and reported it immediately. It took almost 3 weeks to get an exterminator to come to my apartment. It has been around 1 week since the exterminator came, and I found a mouse in the poison trap under my stove.

I am freaking out because

  1. If there is one mouse does that mean there is usually more?

  2. How can I have no signs of mice then the apartment gets them out of nowhere despite having clean habits?

  3. If I am on the very top floor is this an indication of a building issue?

Why didn't this get addressed after the episode Scream (Season 2 Episode 12)?

Warning Spoilers for S2 and S3.

In the episode Scream, Mikasa more or less thinks she is going to die after being squished by the titan. It broke her ribs, comrades around her were dying including Hannes, and Eren could not transform. When destruction was going on around them, I really think Mikasa thought it was their last moments. She started to confess and the anime did a really good job at blocking out the background chaos and focusing on just her and Eren. Everything was silent but them. Mikasa thanked Eren for always being at her side, to show her how to live with purpose, and for wrapping the scarf around her. Then she leans into kiss him but he turns away saying that he will always wrap her scarf around her. Obviously I understand why they didn't kiss. It was not the time or place. I think Mikasa thought they were going to die and that was her telling Eren how she felt so that she could be at peace versus it being a romantic moment. I think Eren thought if he accepted the 'goodbye kiss' he would be accepting their fate of dying. Which is why I think he spun around and yelled at the titans.

Why did neither Eren or Mikasa bring up what happened between them again? Or any other characters that saw it?

I get that there were more pressing issues at matter, but when it jumped from then to season 3 it shows all the characters resting and having down time at a cabin. Granted it wasn't a lot of down time but it was enough it was insinuated that they spent days to weeks at the cabin. It would have been enough time to talk about what happened.

Mikasa had it rough/had a tragic life

In season 1 her biological parents got murdered in front of her and she was starting to accept her fate that she would be sold. Until Eren saved her. Then she is accepted in to live with Eren's family only to watch Carla die in front of her too.

In the early seasons it was clear to others that she went through more than anyone else. A few soldiers in season 1 I remember saying something along the lines of 'Jesus what happened to you?' when they saw how ready she was to fight or her general demeanor. She was one of the few to experience titans first hand in the fall of Shiganshina.

As the seasons went on Mikasa was the strongest solider second to Levi, but I felt like she really did not want to use her strength or power. That she wanted a life of peace. She only used her strength at first to protect Eren and later her friends. It must be awful to have such Ackerman super strength and have to use it to go to war despite just longing for peace.

While I do think Eren had feelings for Mikasa, he really did treat her terribly at times probably because he didn't know what to do with his feelings. The way it played out is at points it seems like Eren resents Mikasa for her always saving him. There are only a few subtle instances I have noticed where he shows he cares for her until the big end scene. To imagine devoting your life to caring about someone for them to treat you as if you didn't exist for the better part of 3 seasons.

Mikasa also rarely smiled. A moment that comes to mind is when her, Eren, and Armin are at the sea. It is a big moment for them, and they talked about it since they were kids. She had smiled but you could tell she so rarely did that it was uncomfortable for her. I think I only saw her smile 5 times in the entire series.

Of course everyone had it bad to a point but I feel like Mikasa was so introverted that she held her problems close to her. She was always able to be ready to fight so I feel like no one really stopped to make sure she was okay.

Ending spoiler >!but her wanting nothing but to live out her life and go back to home, 'Shiganshina'and live out her days in peace with Eren and to then be the one to kill Eren and being the only one to do it. She sacrificed her world for the world. !<

Who do you think was the smartest and why?

Armin: He paid attention to every detail and did not speak up until his logic was solid. Every major uncover he was right about. The only downfall was that he lacked the confidence to believe in his logic and sometimes doubted himself to the point where he spoke up too late.

Erwin: I believe that he was the opposite of Armin he was a good leader with hunches. He had the ability to critically think and see long term goals which is why I think he was a good leader. However, most of his decisions were based on gut instincts.

Pieck: I believe was the smartest of them all. She saw strategies instantly and went with her gut feeling. She had Armin's logic and Erwin's confidence. Somethings I can think of right of the bat was when she ran up to the soldiers and fawned hugging them in Marley and told them to tail her when she thought it was weird they were being escorted by a familiar solider who turned out to be Yelena. Or multiple times in battle where she saw the immediate best strategy and saw it through.

My order is Pieck>Armin>Erwin.

I can't stop thinking about the ending

It felt like out of nowhere, Attack on Titan took this spin on the ending where all the main characters became a blip in the universe. I honestly think the ending was right for the series and it was done so well. I can't think of another ending that would have suited the series.

In the same breath, the ending left me with such a bleak feeling when we realized everyone's' sacrifice was for temporary peace. It was to end the war not all wars. Then it goes to show how they may have lived a peaceful life but as technology advances, the wars start again.

I feel like when a world is set up in a show, typically if there is a resolution to the series that is that. It would have rarely spun off to show the future that far ahead and let the viewer know that the win was only temporary and seemingly insignificant on the grand scale of things. It almost hits too close to home when you realize it mirrors real life history with wars repeating.

As I stated previously I don't think there could have been any other ending but after going through so many character developments, seeing how many lives were lost, and seeing how those that survived are either left with mental or physical scars of the past it is a lot to process. Eren never got freedom, he realized the only solution was a temporary one in which he could not be apart of, he could not live his life or obtain his dreams as he was the only tool that could stop the current war.

It's like a .... then what? moment for everyone that survived. Could they really live a 'long peaceful life' with the memories of the past?
