Feeling the link between density & isolation

Quick background- spent maybe 2/3 of my life in/around NYC, moved to Sun Belt suburbs for the latest 1/3, recently visited NYC with my kids

Biggest thing that jumped out at me......... it seemed extremely lonely and isolated. People don't smile or look each other in the eye. It was weird to adjust the other way when I left NYC, but Im realizing I like it, even as somewhat of a loner/misanthrope

Studies seem to indicate it's kind of a fight or flight response from just being around too many people all the time. I think we know the clear environmental benefits of density but I feel like the quality of life & psychological aspects get glossed over. Is that just a NYC thing? I have been to other big cities and feel like it was kind of the same. Def was the case in California

I feel like there's a sweet spot of density that is dense enough to be walkable while still enabling people to have privacy/quiet/personal space. Places like NYC seem like too much IMO

Don't sleep on AI racing.... fun last lap battle for 1st

I am the yellow car....

Ran with this pack the whole race. I need to work on being cleaner and leaving space. Still a super fun race though. Sorry for lack of sound

I don't do official races anymore. Might join leagues but honestly happy to just do AI racing. Maybe one day they will do AI only subscriptions....

EDIT- I cant change the title- I use fixed difficulty; the adaptive AI sucks IMO. Find a difficulty range that matches your pace and have a ball. I think the fix for CPU/"AI" racing in general is to have fixed difficulty set by IR. They have enough data to know what corresponding lap times and driver quality is like. Heck enable setting SR too.

True or false: first step to transcribing a solo should be.....

....memorizing it to the point you can sing along with it or play it in your head.

I feel like this guarantees a lot of useful advantages:

  • Kind of ensures you are picking solos you actually like since I imagine it would be tough to study a solo you're not interested in. Being in the drivers seat for what you listen to and study will help you develop your individual sound.
  • Takes out a lot of guesswork- you literally know what comes next; you prob will have some understanding of the underlying chord changes etc. Makes the solo much less a kind of random stream of notes.
  • Deepens audiation & the kind of practical "on the job" ear training that IMO is the foundation of playing

Just a random thought I had, wanted to see what others thought.

On the street, I'm not sure there's any such thing as a "slow" sport bike anymore

Hopefully that's legible

I was just thinking about my first bike (Ninja 650R) and how bikes like it get dismissed for being slow or w/e. But I remember that little thing being an absolute monster from a dig. Short gearing and torque made it ridiculously easy to launch too. It was so much fun at stoplights. Once you got up to highway speeds it had enough power to not need to downshift out of 6th for passes which was fine for me

I "upgraded" to a 765 RS and was actually kind of disappointed with it on the street..... at the track and highway speeds it obviously demolished the 650 but around town the longer gears really sapped the launch and kept it out of the powerband. I only ride it on track now

People love 600s-1000s and obv can and should buy what they want but I do feel like on the street "slow" bikes are still quick AF, and a bike with good low end/midrange + gearing might be worth checking out over something with super peaky power and a 1st gear that goes to like 90. On that 650 I could just let the clutch out and squirt, 765 needs feathering and finesse which just wasnt fun around town IMO

Am I missing something about the popular ear training methods?

Ive been making music for 30 years and I started just playing by ear. I'd just play what I wanted to hear on the keyboard. Prob 20 years in I started picking up theory that let me formalize what I was hearing and making. So Id say I have a pretty practical ear; I can parse out the melody and harmony of a middle of the road jazz tune.

So to me the whole ear training app deal kind of doesnt make sense to do because it doesnt train your ear how to hear and use intervals in a practical musical way. To me intervals in music are contextual and geometric..... which is kind of the opposite of how interval apps train. In music youre getting intervals layered on top of each other coming at you multiple times a second. So being able to tell the difference between a major and minor 6th in isolation wont help.

And its kind of unnecessary given how contextual music is. Most songs are in some kind of major key signature which means 7 notes and possible intervals (in both directions). Typical harmony further whittles down what intervals youre prob going to hear during a certain chord or cadence. And a lot of interval patterns are common.... scalar movement, arpeggios, pentatonic patterns etc.

So if the goal is to be able to hear intervals in music I feel like the most straightforward path is by listening to and learning how to recognize intervals in music. Im bad at recognizing intervals in isolation but I can recognize them in actual music well enough to make and play it which seems to be the end goal IMO

What do you think?

L2 charging overheating at 48A

Been having an issue this summer where my ID4 will throw a red light code and stop charging with my Chargepoint

Only fix I've found is to dial back the current to like 30A. Charger/car is in my garage but the charger is on an exterior wall. Seems like the system is susceptible to high humidity as well as sensible heat. Do I need to get this checked out by an electrician? I will try another 48A charge and see if it's hot at the panel

How do fast drivers brake so smoothly?

Just got my Garage 61 deal set up and compared my best lap with the fastest for the track/config (FF1600 at Watkins Glen)

Def a huge eye opener on stuff to work on but the one thing that jumped out the most was the brake traces. Mine is blue, fastest lap is red. Aside from me overbraking, my trace is super jagged. How do I get mine smooth like the fast lap? I am using the Logitech RS pedals with the LC brake.

Am I not searching right, or is there really no FF1600 league??

FF1600 has to be the best car in the sim

Like take a Spec Miata and cut another 1000lb out of + prob 1-2 feet of width from it. It's quick but not brain melting. No downforce = it's super natural and intuitive to drive. Again it's tiny so going 3 or even 4 wide isn't crazy and you can really vary your lines a ton. I do motorcycle track days IRL and dare I say these legit feel close to riding

When I filter on FF1600 in the leagues there's nothing. Again not sure I'm not filtering right, could be user error. But if not come on. I think this gets unfairly dinged as a rookie car to grind through for higher licenses. But it's legit brilliant. Extra speed over the Formula Vee makes it more interesting (though I admit I need to give FV more time). It has higher and more consistent grip vs Skippy. And again for me personally Im just kind of over high downforce

I dont want to start/manage a league as I don't have time but Im hoping this post gets somebody else to

Easy ways to tell whether a bike is good for beginners (rant incoming)

Ive seen this play out so many times its almost like a script. Here are all the hallmarks of a BAD beginner bike:

  • Person looking for advice has to ask whether or not a bike is good to begin on
  • Person looking for advice makes all kinds of promises about how careful they will be
  • Person looking for advice talks about features/tech on the bike that will keep them safe
  • Responses contain words/phrases like "its manageable", "youll be fine if....", "i started on xxx and am ok", and my favorite, "just respect the throttle bro 🤙"

To me what makes a good beginner bike is pretty effing obvious. Just think low. Low power, low weight, low seat height, low cost. Riding is difficult and dangerous enough. Why make it more difficult starting on the wrong bike? Because you convinced yourself you wont be happy w/o starting on a fast bike? You will "get bored"? How do you know what will bore you if youve never ridden any bike?

Not to mention self control isnt just limited to riding the bike, it also extends to choosing the bike. IMO if you cant take a few thousand miles to start on something small its extremely unlikely you will exhibit self control on a faster bike. Only kind of safety cap I see there is people "see what the bike can do", get scared shitless and then ride timid the rest of the time. I see it all the time when people bring their liter bikes to the track. A lot of them go slower and slower as the day progresses.

Those posts always feel like a kid asking their parents for permission to make an obviously bad decision. Its less about getting legit advice and more about offloading personal responsibility IMO. "Someone on the internet said I could start on a 600 so Im good to go".

I guess if you just want to have a cool bike and are OK w/never really learning how to ride then it is what it is. But starting on something small, really mastering the basics and THEN moving to something faster just seems like the better path to me. That is just my opinion though, do whatever you want.

Feel like I'm running out of study problems for HVAC PE

I am using EPG which I really like and highly recommend but I feel like I could use more study material

I do have the 101 PPI solved problems but there are only maybe 30 problems relevant to HVAC PE. Do I just need to start doing practice exams?

Aren't crossovers just lifted hatchbacks and wagons?

I hear a lot of car guys saying car makers need to bring hatchbacks/wagons back

But arent crossovers basically lifted hatchbacks/wagons? I get that theyre not as cool but functionally I dont see the difference. You basically trade handling and fuel economy for better visibility and more ground clearance for snow and maybe some dirt roads.

The price jumps are even the same....... CRV is basically an Accord hatchback/wagon....... Accord wagon cost like 5-10% more than the sedan, CRV costs about 10% more than the Accord.

Obviously there arent a lot of fun crossovers like there were fun hatchbacks/wagons but thats different from saying we need to bring back something like a Corolla/Camry wagon. Those are basically already here.

Looking good immediately before a crash lmao

Belly pan dzus fell out- I will sort it out

Didnt check pressures..... 6th or so lap I think the front pressure was out of bounds. Awaiting data (thats another long story) to see if anything was strange about the lap.

IMO Nissan is as reliable as Toyota if you avoid the CVTs

Admittedly thats a huge if but if you can drive stick, are looking for a truck or can find a Z/G/Q/M that isn't totally clapped out you can basically get Toyota reliability for like half price. Thoughts?

What is a "true"/"genuine" car enthusiast?

This sub just came across my feed and the name jumped out at me

I like cars, I know a lot about cars, I've owned a lot of cars but I hesitate to call myself a car enthusiast. How does one become one, and what is the value in it?

The 1 thing that would make AI/CPU racing borderline perfect........

Set difficulty by IRating.

The adaptable aspect is great, though a little strange....... I find on the medium setting that practice and quali times are like 2-3 seconds faster than race pace, so I end up starting near the back of the grid and working my way to the front. Then if I get past the leader they engage God mode and immediately match my pace.

I feel like iRacing has enough data to make solid guesses on what pace each car/track combo can run for a given iRating. So setting difficulty that way would make it a super direct + more usable training tool. What do you think

Thinking about TRT? You should watch this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axdnjvRZd3U

Good video from a panel of doctors who don't have a direct/vested interest in turning you into a lifelong customer

Hopefully this helps people cut through the noise as I see a lot of dudes get talked into jumping on TRT w/o having a proper + unbiased evaluation.

How do I turn a 3D scan into a solid body?

I scanned a portion of my motorcycle gas tank- is it possible to convert this to a solid body? Do I need to redo the scan to make it smoother? I had to cover the tank in masking tape for the scanner to read it.

Melodic minor tune reccs please

Im really trying to learn the melodic minor sound.... it has captured my ear a few times and I wanna learn how to improv/compose with it

Most recent tunes I remember with it are Caravan, intro to Weather Report's Young And Fine, and the part of the head on Horace Silver's "Que Pasa" where I think he switches from E major to A minor melodic (the melody uses A minor dyads where you'd expect A majors)

I think I have accidentally thrown it in some of my compositions but it wasnt intentional. I went up the scale one way and came down another. I feel like it was a big thing with classical music as well. Just looking for examples of compositions and solos that use it
