Is this wheel too small? It’s at least 15 maybe 16 inches

Context: got it from another rat owner, just put it in today and photo is one of my rats using it for the first time/getting used to it, could that be why his tail is a little curled since he might’ve been uncomfortable with this random moving sphere he discovered? I’m rlly worried now bc I was so lucky to get this wheel for free and I can’t afford one otherwise. Do I need to get rid of it?

Degus vs rats-questions from a rat owner

Dw I’m not getting Degus anytime soon! But having my boys for a few years is breaking my heart with how fast they go :( I was wondering if Degus are similar in terms of temperament, and what they need that different from rats. I have heard they’re almost like a chinchilla mixed with a rat but idk how accurate that is. Either way, if I were to consider them I’d do plenty of research beforehand and lots of preparing (again, would be years from now if I were to). I know the more the merrier, but I’m curious- how is it having Degus? Do they live a bit longer? Anything I should know?

I have a double critter nation right now with my beautiful 3 boys, and I’m ok if they aren’t as friendly as rats, but also wonder how they are in general/ important things to know! Thanks!!

Injured fledgling- what do I do :(

My family and I heard this chirping noise and went to see the bird in the woods of this long trail and it was a baby bird on the ground with the top beak gone and another baby bird next to it dead with flies on it. It kept chirping for help over and over and my family told me I had to leave it. They said wildlife rehab wouldn’t do anything, but what if they could at least humanely kill it so it didn’t suffer.. it was helpless and trying so hard to survive. Everyone moved on but I feel sick. I’m an animal behavior major and I’ve always loved animals but I genuinely feel so sick. I know it won’t survive, but it didn’t look that young- feathers were on it and it was almost like a fledgling. I don’t know how they ended up how they did but I can’t get its chirping out of my ears.. could I call somewhere? Will that bird suffer? Is there any chance maybe it will live? I know they might not be able to do anything but I cant shake this. This is something I could’ve intervened with somehow in some way. At least take it to be euthanized..

Med clarification?

Idk if this breaks the rules because I’m not asking for instructions, they’re in front of me and I just want to make sure I’m reading it right? If it is I’m sorry and mods delete it

Hi! I have a 2 yo rat with chronic URI's and vet gave me meds to nebulize to him. Vet is closed so can't call : (
Meds are:
Enrofloxacin: mix 0.25 ml with 7ml of saline for 20 mins every 12 hrs
Acetylcysteine: 0.25ml same instructions 20 mins ever 12 hrs
it says on both they need to be 2x a day every 12 hrs and for 20 mins every 12 hrs.. so is that 80 mins of nebulizing a day??? Is that not a lot? l've never nebulized him for more than 20 mins and he isn't the biggest fan.. I have the nebulizer box and plain nebulizer but he only will be still in the box. Also I'm worried because halfway through the meds my rat sitter will have to do this to finish up, and I feel like that's a lot for her to handle : ( is this right? Also you can't mix them so would I need to wash the nebulizer between uses?

Fist full of ice cream!

My 2yo did so good at the vet so I got him and his brother some ice cream! He’s been having some chronic URI’s but we got some meds and nebulizer plans. Vet said at his age he is fine to gain weight so that makes me feel better 😭 he’s just big boned I swear 😥
