The communist era in the USSR, especially under Stalin, is widely and justifiably seen as one of the most violent and oppressive periods in modern history. The Great Terror, the Holodomor, the purges of the military and ethnic minorities, the show trials, the brutal criminal code, slave labor, and the Gulag network are a dark monument to that time. What’s striking is that in Russian historiography and propaganda, almost no one actually denies the scale of these atrocities.

All these crimes, carried out under the banner of communist legality, are justified in Russian propaganda as the “necessary” preparation of the state and its population for war. I remember a line from one Russian textbook that captures this mentality perfectly: Stalin demanded the impossible from people in order to squeeze out of them whatever could be squeezed.

I keep wondering how much truth there is in this reasoning and what strong counterarguments exist. In theory, Russia should have ended up among the victorious powers after World War I. Instead, it collapsed economically (due to lack of industry), politically and socially. Stalin then launched rapid industrialization and imposed strict control over the army and society, which indeed turned out to be crucial, especially during Operation Barbarossa. I don’t want to sound like a Stalin apologist, but I’m trying to think through the best arguments.

Jest pewien typ ludzi, który uruchamia się, gdy dowiaduje się, że nie macie prawa jazdy. Osobiście spotkało mnie to parę razy, ale największy triger zaliczyła moja kobieta, gdy w końcu zdecydowałem się na kurs, bo przeprowadziłem się do niej i stwierdziliśmy, że dobrze będzie kupić swoje autko. Gdy powiedziała o tym swoim koleżankom, to jedna zrobiła wielkie oczy i nie mogła pojąć jak można nie mieć prawa jazdy. Potem kilka razy dopytywała jak mi idzie i kiedy W KOŃCU zdam lol.

Jest też pewien typ mężczyzn w średnim/starszym wieku dla których samochód jest całym światem, więc posiadanie prawa jazdy, to konieczne minimum do w ogóle bycia człowiekiem.

Teraz na X czytam, że są młode kobiety, które skeślaja mężczyzn na starcie, bo ci nie mają prawa jazdy i/lub samochodu, mimo że same nie prowadzą.

Co takiego jest w tym dokumencie, że jest ważniejszy od edukacji, pracy, wierzeń i poglądów, czy wreszcie od tego jakim jest się człowiekiem, że dla niektórych brak papierka jest dyskwalifikujący?

Powiesci, opowiadania, poezje, dzienniki, reportaże, eseje, listy. Do wyboru, do koloru. Czy ludzie tak naprawdę zaczytują się Iwaszkiewiczem? To bez wątpienia ciekawy twórca, z biografią łączącą 20-lecie międzywojenne z komunistyczną Polską. Niecodzienny życiorys, lista dzieł zekranizowanych przez Wajdę, a do tego nienachalny i elegancki wątek homoseksualny. Wszystko to czyni z niego interesującego i nieoczywistego twórcę, ale czy ludzi aż tak to fascynuje, że wydawnictwa muszą w nieskończoność wydawać jego dzieła? Za bardzo nie rozumiem tego fenomenu.
