What cable do I need for my setup? Laptop to monitor hub

Looking for a one cable setup for my framework 13 laptop to connect it to my LG 34UC87M for use as a hub. I'd like for it to power my laptop and send video out to the monitor.

However, I'm not sure what kind of cable to look for? It has thunderbolt support but it isn't usb-c to usb-c. My laptop's port is a usb-c but the monitor's thunderbolt port is like a square?

Link to monitor specs

What kind of cable am I looking for at the store?

Thanks!

After my last post testing Debian-based distros, I settled on stable with the stock kernel. Here are the results of testing EVERY DE Debian offers.

---

Tests were performed with the Steam flatpak

All DEs were in performance mode

Compositors were turned off where possible.

---

OS: Debian GNU/Linux 13 (trixie) x86_64

Host: Laptop 13 (AMD Ryzen 7040Series) (A5)

Kernel: Linux 6.12.101+deb13-amd64

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7640U (12) @ 4.97 GHz

GPU: AMD Radeon 760M [Integrated]

Memory: 4.68 GiB / 14.94 GiB (31%)

Swap: 1.00 MiB / 15.31 GiB (0%)

Disk (/): 76.23 GiB / 441.37 GiB (17%) - ext4

---

Turns out, when your hardware is the bottleneck, DE doesn't really matter

Cheapest Android Handheld to use for Testing as a Game Dev

I used to own a Retroid Pocket 4 and Flip and used those for testing but they've died.

I just want a very cheap and low end Android device for purely testing my 2D games on and to have a device that I can use to benchmark performance with. Basically to say "if it runs here, it runs on anything".

What is something cheap and easy to get a hold of?

Thanks!

Guess I should also add:

I'd prefer a horizontal setup, thumbsticks and something that comes with android preinstalled. Nothing that would require fiddling with to get going.

So far a cheap phone with some grips or just pair a controller seems actually like a good options. Also the mangmi air x does too but under $100 would be even better lol that said I know that is basically impossible

I currently develop 2D games in Love2D and Defold so my games can run on pretty low end hardware. On Linux, my current project runs perfectly on an RG28xx, for example.

Where we started vs where we're at

Project started on June 19th, so just under 2 months in! I plan on adding couch multiplayer for 2 players and some more QoL additions and being done.

I want this game to be just pure arcade fun, no trend chasing with roguelike/roguelite mechanics or anything like that. I fall into that trap too often!

Check out the game here

Finally Made an AppImage for my Game. So Nice to Have a Single Linux Executable Anyone On Linux Can Run!

Didn't think it would be so hard to figure out since makelove has done such a great job with my Windows and .love builds. But it is done and now I know how to do it for next time!

Check it out on my Itch page

New Tiles or Old Tiles, what do you all think?

I'm trying to make my game look a bit more professional and to juice things up a bit.

After making changes to try and make the game feel more intense at higher levels (faster spinning black hole and stars, larger red warning light, etc.)

I decided that I thought the tiles looked way too out of place.

So, I have here a side by side, the old tiles which are brighter with a black outline, and the new ones, muted but with a white outline and falling shapes are now just white blocks.

Am I going in the right direction here? Or should I just do something totally different? The only thing I know is that I need to keep the colorful rings. Don't care what color just able to be easily distinguishable.

Feel free to check out the game in it's current state here

Today was...interesting...5 people really liked the game? SO EXCITED THOUGH

Launched my fundraiser today to help me recoup costs and pay for some assets/steam fees.

Didn't realize I would get a good amount of attention and 5 apparently VERY happy customers haha. It's just a fun arcade tetris-like game after all.

Check out the game TetraCore here and thanks if you do decide support, or even if you just visit and play. Thanks!

Started and Itch Fundraiser for TetraCore, Steam Page Coming Soon!

Hello everyone! Thanks for Checking out TetraCore!

I'm super happy to announce the launch of this fundraiser!

So, firstly I just want to say thank you to those of you who have sent some kind words my way and to those of on the TetraCore Discord and Love2D Discord channel and Subreddit for all your help. You folks are absolutely amazing.

Why a Fundraiser?

Well, for a game I started as a game jam submission, I intended on spending no money on the project every. However, as I built it out and thought about putting it on Steam, I quickly realized I needed a few things:

  1. Steam fees - $100
  2. Capsule and cover art for Itch and Steam Page - $250 (commissioned the talented PaladinMaar for this one)
  3. Started an LLC for legal protections when selling on Steam - $50
  4. Music and Sfx asset packs - Undetermined, still looking
  5. Maybe commissioning a trailer - Undetermined, still looking

The fundraiser is just to help recoup some of the costs of all this but regardless this game will be going up on Steam eventually.

What do you get for Donating?

Currently, donating to the fundraiser gets you the desktop/android builds.

The web build and downloads are almost identical. The only difference being that the desktop versions include the online leaderboard. The android build currently doesn't have a working leaderboard BUT you get to play the game on your android-based retro handhelds.

Plans for the Full Release

So, what will the full release on Steam/Itch feature?

1. Local multiplayer. Play against a friend to see who can survive the longest and get the highest score.

  1. Choose your difficulty level. Choose any level, 1 to 10, and play a round where the level never changes. Pick level 10 and try not to instantly lose or choose level 1, turn down the music and play your own and just chill. It's up to you!

  2. Possibly a match mode. The player is shown a shape they must recreate without losing, see how many shapes you can match.

Lastly, I'm also open to ideas from the community! Please share them with me on the TetraCore Discord!

So, again thanks to everyone for your support and I look forward to continuing development on this project and hope to get it to you all soon!

Check out the game and show your support

Embracing Pure Vanilla Gnome

After making this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/debian/comments/1vej7dk/comment/p1ptz50/?context=1

I tried KDE Plasma for a couple of days and it just does NOT click with me. So, I was determined to return back to Gnome and match the performance I got on KDE. Turns out I just needed to turn scaling on my display down to 100%, so I feel very silly.

Anyway, coming back to a fresh install of Debian Stable, I've decided to run Gnome with no extensions, just as the gnome-gods intended. I gotta say, it's pretty nice and pretty quiet. I'm not even using any themes, fonts, icons, etc. Just booted up, installed my apps, and back to work I went.

I love it and might just run it like this forever, really.

Ok, that's all. Just wanted to show my appreciation for vanilla gnome.

Regarding Distros

  • Debian 13 and Pika OS aren't as far away as I thought. Really, unless you just like Pika OS, there doesn't seem to be any reason to use it besides maybe hardware compatibility.

  • Vanilla OS was still slightly worse than normal Gnome on Debian Stable, even after the fix. So, it's only worth it if you like an immutable distro.

  • Testing and Sid provide little to no benefit over Stable. They're only worth using if you need very new hardware compatibility that only newer kernels provide. Even still, you could backport a kernel to Debian Stable if needed.

  • With Wayland moving out of experimental on next release of Cinnamon, if the graphical glitches are fixed while keeping performance high, that would be incredible.

  • MX performs basically the same as regular Debian. Only worth using if you like MX Tools IMO.

Regarding Desktops

  • After setting scaling to 100% for Gnome and Cinnamon, they were basically identical to the results from XFCE and KDE. Looks like the desktop ultimately does not matter.

Final thoughts

  • Unless you like the convenience of curated distros, basic Debian Stable is as good, if not sometimes better, for gaming if you have a setup similar to mine.

  • Obviously these tests are limited and very specific to me but I thought folks here would be interested anyway.

  • None of these findings were particularly surprising or exciting.

  • A backported kernel and the xanmod kernel basically did nothing for me on Debian 13, and sometimes even made things worse.

  • I'm glad I performed these tests because with all the hype around newer distros, gaming distros, immutable distros, etc. I thought I was missing out on something but nope, my good old boring Debian Stable seems like it'll be my forever home.

Use Case

  • Ryubing switch emulation

  • Retroarch retro-gaming

  • Playing indie titles like SilkSong and Slay the Spire 2 via Steam, Heroic, etc.

  • Game development in Love2D and 3D development in Godot.

  • Day to day web browsing, watching videos, document editing, etc.

Reminder

  • These tests are specific to me and my hardware, you should 100% test for yourself on your own hardware to ensure similar results. Also, if you are running a distro/de you love and it works, no need to change it!

MAJOR UPDATE BECAUSE I'M STUPID

  • The issue with Cinnamon desktop was solved, I didn't realize that scaling messed up the numbers so much. I was able to get results identical to XFCE and KDE with window scaling turned down to 100% from 125%.

  • The same issue with Gnome. I was able to get identical results use 100% scaling and not 150%.

WHAT THIS MEANS

  • DE doesn't matter either, use what you like on a base distro and call it a day lol how anticlimactic.

  • Sorry to fans of Cinnamon and Gnome, I get to go back to using Gnome without feeling like I'm missing any performance though. Thank god

So, obviously this testing is anything but rigorous. However, since my Framework 13 will be my only laptop for a long time to come, I wanted to squeeze all the performance I can out of it while remaining on a Debian base.

I'm just not interested in anything Arch based at all, maybe I'll test Fedora one day but I really just love and know Debian well. Ubuntu based distros are also something I'm not super interested in.

I chose to test distros and desktops that I would actually want to use which is why things like MX Linux and LMDE aren't tested. I just don't want to use them anymore.

Regarding Distros:

  1. Debian 13 and Pika OS aren't as far away as I thought. Really, unless you just like Pika OS, there doesn't seem to be any reason to use it besides maybe hardware compatibility. That said I didn't test Hyperland, Niri, or COSMIC. I just don't really want to use them so I wasn't interested in their results.
  2. Vanilla OS was notably not great. I'm sure a KDE version would do much better but still be pretty average (for a KDE version). Not the distro's selling point so no surprise here, I was mostly just interested in how an immutable distro would do.

Regarding Desktops:

  1. Cinnamon just is not great for me. It is by far and away the worst option for performance. There really is no way around it.
  2. Gnome was worse than XFCE and KDE by a decent margin. Nothing insane but certainly noticeable. I'd say though that since this machine is barely able to even play Skyrim at medium settings, most folks aren't going to be buying this with the hopes to game with it. So Gnome is probably fine for most people. Makes me sad because I currently use Gnome and love it.
  3. XFCE (with a disabled compositor) and KDE were extremely close together, I'd say with KDE getting a very slight edge overall. This makes me happy because I used XFCE for many years and only moved away from it due to this laptop having a high dpi screen and X11 scaling being pretty bad.

Regarding Kernels on Debian 13:

  1. A backported kernel and the xanmod kernel basically did nothing for me on Debian 13, and sometimes even made things worse.
  2. Looks like the DE matters much more than the kernel in this scenario.

Final thoughts:

  1. Obviously these tests are limited and very specific to me but I thought folks here would be interested anyway.
  2. I'll be moving from Debian 13 using Gnome to Debian 13 using KDE. I think I get a nice boost in performance and get to keep the stability of Debian.
  3. None of these findings were particularly surprising or exciting (although cinnamon being that bad was not expected, I just expected it to be slightly worse than Gnome).

* Lastly, my use case is:

  1. Ryubing switch emulation
  2. Retroarch retro-gaming
  3. Playing indie titles like SilkSong and Slay the Spire 2 via Steam, Heroic, etc.
  4. Game development in Love2D and 3D development in Godot.
  5. Day to day web browsing, watching videos, document editing, etc.

What does a desktop focus mean and how does it affect the user?

I see that Solus focuses on the desktop and not servers for example. but what does that mean for someone like me who currently is on Debian stable?

I use gnome and mostly flatpaks, so what do I gain by switching to solus? server implementation isn’t important to me as I just use my desktop for work like dev work, gaming, GIS work, making document, etc.

I tried solus and it does feel nice and snappy and I enjoy the newer gnome version. didn’t love all the extensions installed by default but I’m sure I can just get rid of those.

thanks!

Custom accent color gnome 48?

I love the manjaro green accent color but don’t want to use manjaro. I’m on Debian stable currently.

is there any way to do this? I’ve tried messing with css files and broken extensions to no avail lol

thanks!

Finally getting to a point soon (once I get some capsule art, music, etc) where I'll be considering starting a steam page to collect wishlists while I work on the game modes I have planned and polishing even further.

Maybe even an itch fundraiser to help pay the steam fees.

I'm starting to feel very proud of this little arcade game I made for a game jam. This is very likely my first commercial project and that feels really cool.

Thanks to this awesome community for all the help you've given me these past few weeks!

Probably unpopular opinion but I think Geany should be the default IDE for Gnome

I realize gnome-builder is mainly for building gnome apps so I don't mean for it to replace that, but in the same way KDE has Kate for a general purpose IDE, I think Geany should be an IDE included when installing gnome.

Gnome needs a general purpose IDE imo and ever since Geany got the LSP plugin in version 2.1, it's so damn good. The plugins really make it feel so complete to me.

Plus, in like 5 minutes of theming, I got it looking pretty in-line with the rest of the desktop. So idk just my two cents.

I know most folks just download vs code and don't think twice but I really am not interested in it or codium.

Anyway, what editor are you all using these days?

Way to cap the charging limit to 80% on Pocket Flip 2?

I bought a flip 2 a while back with the official dock and have been using it a lot lately to watch YT/Netflix on the tv it is connected to. Controlling it with a wireless keyboard/mouse.

However, I want to be able to leave it on the dock when not in use because as it stands I need to remove it from the dock to ensure it isn't charging all the time and degrading the battery.

Anyway to cap the charging like I do with my laptop for instance? I'm very new to android so idk if maybe there is an app or some system setting I'm missing.

Thanks!
