Is Horizons of Spirit Island a good entry point into the full game and good buy for me in current situation?

After recently asking a question here and in board games about mechanics I like in board games (here) and first comment is actually Spirit island. I discovered that Horizons of Spirit Island exists. From what I understand, it is basically a simpler and more beginner friendly version of Spirit Island.

I have also heard that there will be a new reprint of Spirit Island, so I was thinking about getting Horizons first as an entry point, seeing if I actually enjoy the game, and then getting the new reprint when it comes out, or the current version if I end up really loving it.

Also, I have to admit that I really like the Spirit designs (looks) in Horizons more. Please do not judge me immediately.

What I am mainly wondering is what I actually gain or lose by starting with Horizons instead of the base game.

If I learn Horizons first, will the transition to regular Spirit Island feel natural? Does Horizons teach the core mechanics well enough, or are there important mechanics and concepts that I would basically have to learn from scratch later?

More importantly, is Horizons still fun in the same way as the base game? I am not too concerned about replayability or having fewer Spirits, since I already own quite a few board games and do not get to play as often as I used to. I mainly care about the core gameplay and whether Horizons preserves the fun strategic mechanics that make Spirit Island so good.

I basically do not want to spend time learning Horizons only to discover that it does not really prepare me for the base game.

Would you recommend Horizons as a first step for someone who has never played Spirit Island, or would you just go straight for the full game?

TL;DR: I have never played Spirit Island and am considering Horizons as a cheaper/easier way to see if I like the game before buying the full version. Does Horizons teach the core gameplay well enough to make the transition easy, and does it retain the fun mechanics of the full game? Or am I better off starting with the base game?

EDIT: ORDERED HORIZONs OF SPIRIT ISLAND! It is on the way

What game mechanics give you that “there has to be a way out of this” feeling?

I have been thinking about what I actually enjoy in board games, and I realized that I have a hard time putting it into words.

I don't really enjoy chess because I find it quite dry and I feel like I have to keep track of too many things at once. What I do enjoy is having several possible moves and trying to figure out which one is best.

My favorite situations are when things have gone slightly wrong and I look at the board thinking, "Okay, this is bad, but there has to be a way out of this." I don't necessarily need to fix everything in one turn. I just want to have several tools available and be able to find a clever way to recover if I make good decisions.

This is probably why I enjoy card games like Pokémon and MTG. I really like having a toolbox of cards and looking for the thing I need in the current situation. I also enjoy learning a deck and eventually knowing what kind of card or combination I should be looking for.

Journeys in Middle Earth gives me a similar feeling. For example, I really enjoy Gandalf because you are constantly cycling through cards and deciding which card is most useful right now. It feels like you are searching through your toolbox for the solution to the current problem.

I also enjoy combos and synergies, but I don't think I am really looking for traditional engine building. Terraforming Mars is probably the exception. I really like Terraforming Mars and it is the only game I have kept in my collection, but I think I would enjoy it even more if there were some kind of army, conflict or invading element that gave me more tactical interaction with other players.

Fantasy Realms is another game I enjoy, but it is a little too limited for me. Once everyone knows the strong combinations, it can start feeling repetitive.

I think what I am really looking for is a game where:

• I have several genuinely useful options on my turn

• I can plan a few turns ahead without having to calculate the entire game

• The current board state matters a lot

• I can get myself into trouble and still have a chance to recover

• Cards, abilities or other tools can give me unexpected solutions

• Combos feel like something I discover during the game rather than just following a predetermined engine

• There is a satisfying feeling of finding the "perfect" move for the situation

I don't necessarily need miniatures, but I really like the combination of a board, cards and miniatures when a game has it.

Co-op or competitive doesn't really matter to me. I mostly play at 2 players, but being playable with 3 or 4 would be nice.

I'm curious what games or mechanics give you this kind of feeling. I'm less interested in games that simply have a lot of strategic depth and more interested in games where you constantly have to look at the current situation and figure out how to make the best of it.

Is Spirit Island difficult because of the strategy or because of the rules and setup?

I have never played Spirit Island, but I keep hearing about it and seeing it mentioned everywhere. I noticed it has a complexity rating of around 4 on BGG, which honestly sounds a little intimidating to me.

Some games that are rated considerably lower have already been a bit of a pain for me to set up, learn, and explain to other people, so I wanted to ask about Spirit Island specifically.

If I understand it correctly, is Spirit Island difficult mainly because there is a lot to think about and the decisions are challenging, rather than because the game itself is difficult to learn?

Personally, I really enjoy games where I have to think hard about how to get myself out of a bad situation and look for the perfect move or combination of actions. That kind of difficulty is exactly what I like.

What I really dislike, however, is having to constantly remember and check lots of rules, taking a long time just to learn the game well enough to actually start playing, or having a huge setup that takes forever before you can even get the game onto the table.

So for someone like me, would Spirit Island be a good fit?

Also, since I am only considering buying it at the moment, I was wondering about the current state of the game.

Are there any new editions, reprints, expansions, or other releases expected? Is there any talk of a definitive edition or something similar that might make it worth waiting before buying?

And finally, are there any expansions that actually include miniatures? I love miniatures hehe, so that would definitely be a plus for me.

Basically, is now a good time to get into Spirit Island, or would you wait a bit if you were in my position?

Thanks!

A few random Journeys in Middle Earth questions after coming back to the game

Hey everyone!

I played through one full campaign with my own setup and few chapters with some coworkers on their setups, but those games were pretty spread out and it has been quite a while since I last played. I recently got back into it and realized I have a bunch of unrelated questions about setup, general strategy and some rules.

  1. Is that green card with the three dots that you prepare the first time you play supposed to be prepared at the bottom of every chapter, or is it only prepared the first time?
  2. I am a bit confused about provoking enemies and their counterattacks.

2.1 Besides moving out of a space with an enemy and interacting with something while an enemy is present, is there anything else that provokes an enemy?

2.2 If I attack an enemy and it can counterattack me, then I attack the same enemy again, can it counterattack again? And what happens if multiple heroes attack the same enemy? Can the enemy counterattack every time it is attacked, or only once?

I noticed the icon in the app sometimes becomes greyed out, which is what confused me.

2.3 I am also a bit confused about enemy movement during the Shadow Phase. For example, if the app says something like "Move 1: Attack Legolas", and you choose no target after moving one space toward Legolas, then it suddenly says "Move 3: Closes Hero". Does that mean the enemy then moves three additional spaces toward the nearest hero, for a total of four spaces? That seems extremely strong, so I am wondering if I am misunderstanding how this works.

  1. Should we generally try to stay together since quite a few heroes get benefits when sharing a space with another hero? Should we actively plan around those bonuses, or is it usually better for everyone to split up and focus on different objectives?
  2. Regarding the accounts, I created an Asmodee account, but I noticed that I can buy additional Journeys in Middle Earth campaigns on Steam. This confused me a little. If I buy the campaigns through Steam, are they somehow linked to my Asmodee account, so that the Asmodee app will automatically recognize the campaigns I purchased? Or how exactly does that work? It has been a long time since I played, so I am a bit lost with how the accounts and purchases work now.
  3. We are also looking for some good hero combinations to try. We played Legolas and Gimli. What are some other good two player combinations? I am particularly interested in Gandalf. Is he good with two players? And for three players, what hero combination do you guys usually enjoy playing?

Thanks in advance for the answers, and sorry if some of these are really basic questions. I just haven't played in a long time and wanted to make sure I understand everything correctly before getting back into it!

Which of these breeds would fit my lifestyle best?

I am currently researching my next dog and trying to choose a breed that would fit my lifestyle well. The breeds I am considering are Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, White Swiss Shepherd, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Rough Collie.

Technically this would be my second dog, but I think it is fair to consider it my first serious dog as an adult. I had my first dog when I was in high school, and although I loved him very much, I was much younger and I am aware of mistakes I made with his training and handling. This time I want to approach things more responsibly and learn as much as I can beforehand.

I live in a house with a yard, and most of the time there will be someone at home, so the dog would generally not have to spend long periods alone. However, there may be periods when schedules overlap and nobody is home. In some situations this could even mean a fairly typical 9 to 5 day, although that would not be the normal routine. I would therefore like a dog that can learn to be comfortable alone for a few hours when necessary.

I am not looking for a dog that requires the absolute minimum amount of exercise or training. I am happy to put in the work and I want to train the dog properly. At the same time, I would prefer a dog that is not extremely high energy and can relax at home.

Daily walks would definitely be part of the routine. I am also planning to attend a dog training school, although I cannot say with 100% certainty that this will happen because circumstances can always change. I also enjoy going into nature and would like a dog that could join me for occasional hikes or trips outdoors, but this would not be a daily activity. I may also try agility at some point, although I am not sure yet.

Ideally, I would like a dog that:

• Is relatively easy to train and enjoys being with its owner
• Has good potential for a reliable recall
• Can handle occasional longer outdoor activities
• Would be suitable for training classes and potentially agility (more likely I will do doggy school and less likely agility but still there is a chance)
• Can stay home alone for a few hours when necessary, assuming it is properly trained and gradually taught to be alone
• Is fairly forgiving of mistakes from an inexperienced owner and is not extremely easy to develop bad habits with
• Is generally calm and manageable in everyday life
• Can at least alert me when someone comes to the house
• Is generally healthy and has a good lifespan
• Is respectful and friendly toward all members of the household
• Is good with children

I understand that individual temperament, breeding and training matter a lot, and I am not expecting any breed to automatically have perfect recall or be able to stay alone without proper training.

One small thing that probably should not be a deciding factor, but I will mention it anyway: visually, I find the White Swiss Shepherd the most beautiful of these breeds. I am trying not to let that influence my decision too much though, and I am much more interested in whether the breed actually fits my lifestyle and experience.

I would really appreciate opinions from people who have actually lived with these breeds. Which one do you think would be the best overall fit for what I am looking for, and are there any important downsides I should consider with each breed?

New player with Shadowed Paths coming soon and a lot of questions

Hi all!

I absolutely love Journeys in Middle earth. I have played it a few times with some colleagues from work and recently bought the base game for myself.

I have not even finished my first campaign yet, but Shadowed Paths is arriving in about a month. I know I probably jumped the gun buying an expansion so early, but honestly, I really wanted to play Gandalf. Hehe

I have a few questions and would really appreciate some advice from more experienced players.

1. How do you handle expansion components?

Shadowed Paths adds new cards, enemies, tiles and other components. Do you mix everything together and use the new components in every campaign, or do you keep expansion components separate?

2. What happens to the Corruption mechanic?

If I play the original base game campaign after owning Shadowed Paths, will Corruption be included? Does adding the expansion change how the original campaign plays?

3. Should I replay the base campaign first?

Would you recommend playing the base campaign several times with different hero combinations before moving on to Shadowed Paths, or is there no real reason to wait?

4. What about Spreading War?

I plan to get Spreading War eventually too. Do its new mechanics also get added to other campaigns, or are expansion mechanics generally tied to their own campaigns?

5. Why are the expansions rated so much higher?

I noticed on BoardGameGeek that the expansions seem to be rated significantly higher than the base game. What do they add that makes the game better? Is it mostly more content, or do they actually improve the gameplay systems?

6. How do you organize everything between campaigns?

How do you keep track of your decks, cards, heroes, equipment and progress when you pack everything away? Do you use an organizer, separate boxes, bags, dividers, or just take pictures and write things down?

I am especially interested in this because until now I have only played as a player with my colleagues. Now people are going to start coming over to my place to play, potentially with different groups playing different campaigns, so I will be the one responsible for setting everything up and putting it away.

Sorry for all the questions! I am just really excited about the game and want to make sure I am doing things properly before I start adding expansions.

Thanks everyone!

Ideas for a casual hidden-role / mystery game for 8 people?

I'm planning a small party for 8 people and want to create a mystery/social deduction game that runs in the background of the evening. I don't want a traditional escape room or a game where everyone sits down for hours. I'd like people to eat, drink and chat normally while secretly pursuing different objectives.

I have two concepts:

  1. Secret agents / hidden roles

Everyone randomly draws a sealed envelope with a secret role. There are 2 secret agents, while the others have different roles such as detectives, witnesses, informants, etc.

Each role has its own objective and possibly secret missions. There could be bluffing, alliances, accusations, voting, hidden information and small clues hidden around the house.

I'd also like a physical object/token that can secretly change hands and is important to the agents' objective.

The important part: I also want to play, so I shouldn't know anyone's role and there should ideally be no game master.

  1. Hidden box / code

There is a small locked box somewhere in the house containing a prize/badge.

Each player gets a different set of clues and puzzles, involving logic, conversations, shared memories, objects and hidden clues around the house (books, plants, decorations, QR codes, etc.).

Everyone follows a different path, but all paths eventually lead to the same 4-digit code. The first person to independently find the box and open it wins.

A possible twist: one player doesn't initially know there is a game. Their normal-looking invitation secretly contains an important clue, and they are "activated" later during the evening.

What I'm looking for

I'd love ideas for combining these concepts or improving them.

Especially:

interesting roles and secret objectives

twists, betrayals and alliances

physical objects/clues

ways to keep everyone involved

mechanics that don't require a game master

ways to make it feel natural alongside a normal party

Basically, I'm looking for something between Secret Hitler/Werewolf, an escape room and a scavenger hunt, but casual enough that the party remains the main event.

What would you do?

First time playing V Rising, looking for beginner tips and build recommendations

My friend and I are about to play V Rising for the first time. We were thinking of starting on a private server that I host myself. Is that a good idea for beginners, or would you recommend something else? Also, any server settings I need to tweak or just go with default?

Do we need to play tutorial or can we just start playing coop and learn together?

I would also appreciate any essential beginner tips. What should we focus on first, what mistakes should we avoid, and what makes the early game smoother and more enjoyable?

I also wanted to ask about builds. I have played a bit of PoE 2, so I was used to following build guides from the start. Does that make sense in V Rising as well, or are builds only something you should really worry about in the end game?

If builds are worth following, where can I find up to date guides or videos? I searched Google but most of what I found seemed old, so I was not sure if those guides are still relevant.

The main goal is to make our first playthrough as smooth and fun as possible because my friend is not usually into survival games, topdown and arpg, so I would love any advice that helps us have a good experience.

Thanks!

New player here. How does online co op actually work with friends?

I have never played V Rising before, but I am thinking about getting it to play with one or maybe two friends.

I am a bit confused about how the online experience actually works. I know there are PvE and PvP servers, but I am not sure what the differences are when playing with friends.

If we play on a PvE server, do we share one castle and progress together, or does everyone build their own base?

If we play on a PvP server, does everyone usually have their own castle and just happen to run into each other in the world, or is PvP more like an arena or a separate activity?

What happens if one friend plays a lot more than the others and gets much higher level? Does that make it difficult for the rest of the group to catch up, or is it not a big issue?

How does loot work? Does everyone get their own drops, or do you have to share everything that drops from enemies and bosses?

I also noticed there is an option to play on a private server. Would you recommend that for a small group of friends, or is it better to play on a public server for a first playthrough? What are the main pros and cons?

Basically I would appreciate any tips on how co op works and what the best way is for a small group of friends to experience the game for the first time.

Game thinks I do not belong at this rank and keeps trying to lower me down for 2 acts now, how can I fight it?

I've come back last season, managed to push plat 1 from silver 3, but I was gaining around 14-20rr and losing 19-26rr constantly.

Now, with this new season, it is worse! I was placed gold 1, got to gold3 and I am losing waaaay more and gaining so little, almost I need to win 2-3 games to compensate for that 1 loss. I am always matched with 1-3 ranks lower players. My aim is not consistent so there is time when I am mvp and when I bottom frag, on average im around middle. I am more of a support player, firstly I will fill what is needed, if not, I will play controller or senty, sometimes initiator, I communicate and setting teammates up, telling when I will do something (flash, throw ability, smoke etc.), planning what we will do and stuff. I can tell that my gameplay IS having impact towards victory and my W/L ratio tells that. But I keep losing rank and rr! Now I had a couple of bad days and I dropped to gold 1 even tho with all these lose I recently got, I have 64 W and 49 L !

I am losing will to play this game and I am not sure what to do! Please help

Is Farever worth getting into right now? How's the optimization, content, and future?

I've been looking into Farever and I'm curious about the current state of the game.

I've seen quite a few people saying the optimization isn't great. I remember trying the demo when it first launched and it was constantly stuttering for me, to the point where it was basically unplayable. Has that improved since then?

How's the player count these days? Is it easy to find people to play with, and do you think the game is worth buying right now?

Can the game be enjoyed both solo and with a friend, or is it really designed around larger groups?

I also saw the roadmap mentions PvP. Do you think that will be a fun addition, and when do you realistically expect it to arrive?

What is there to do in the game right now? Is there enough content to keep you engaged, or does it get repetitive pretty quickly?

How fast is the game being developed? Are the developers releasing meaningful updates on a regular basis?

For some context, I was a huge fan of Northgard and put hundreds of hours into it. Unfortunately, I felt like Shiro Games didn't support it as well as they could have over time, so I've become a bit cautious about jumping into another one of their games.

Do you think Farever has a better future? Does it have a real chance to succeed, and would you say it's worth investing both my time and money into it?

I'd love to hear your honest experiences, especially from people who've played recently.

Sorry for a lot of questions

Deadlock or Veto and why? + Few questions about them

Which one is better after new changes? Idk which to unlock, give me some suggestions

Deadlock is more appealing to me for some reason, but I kinda feel her ult is hard to hit and her toolkit is expensive, while Veto after new changes looks kinda good, easy to lurk and get back fast to team, less expensive kit

Also, can you explain to me few things:

  1. With Deadlock ultimate, do I need to hit them with end of ultimate or is it enough to hit them with any part, often I see on map line of ult bouncing so if they are hit with middle part and not end that expands into circle, will they still be pulled?
  2. Does Veto Interceptor just needs to see the ability or it has some small range that will cover barely doors?
  3. Does Veto Interceptor destroy killjoy setup? Nanoswarms, alarmbot on the ground?

Why omen have lowest win rate?

I always liked lurking but I didnt like to play Omen, his kit kinda felt useless to me. I always picked Clove because of the high win rate, I understand that she is high win rate because of self sustained kit she have, or I picked Miks.

Now that I gave Omen chance again, I kinda like him, I like his kit, I like to play with him, holding those off angles, going somewhere unexpected, so much kills I get with paranoia and I feel like he is true lurker that I always liked to play, even tho his smokes kinda feel clunky to use.

My question is, why is he the lowest win rate agent? What makes him so bad? Or why should I stick to Clove or Miks rather then him?

Also, keep in mind I am low elo, gold3 but I get placed most of the time with silvers or low golds in match, game keeps trying to lower my rank but I keep winning even tho I am not top frager but I will die for my team if needed

Zanimaju me mjesta gdje vi odlazite kada želite pobjeći od gužve, malo usporiti i uživati u prirodi.
