As an aspiring trades worker, I feel like all the jobs are being gatekept from me. How can I possibly find a job that doesn’t have an experience requirement? How can I get experience if every job requires experience? And yes, I’ve contacted my local union, they don’t have any work available at the moment.

Take it from someone that actually went through the prerequisites. I went to trade school. I got my associates degree, OSHA-10, apprentice license, got a clean criminal record, and I can’t find anybody looking for apprentices/helpers.

Then folks say, “jOiN tHe UnIoN!!!” So I talked to them, and they didn’t have work either. What gives? I wanted to be an electrician because I constantly heard about how there was always a demand, and you'll never be out of work. what gives? Does the economy suck this bad? I thought there was a trades shortage, I thought all these data centers were BOOMING with work. Idk, in my personal experience, it all sounds like BS.

Hey guys! My heart is set on doing seasonal work, but I have no references. Every seasonal job I‘ve found wants me to put down references, which is a problem. I’ve been out of a job for over a year, so I’ve lost contact with many of my former colleagues. I have a clean criminal record, college degree, and I’m willing to work any sort of job that would help get my foot in the door for seasonal work. Everybody wants prior experience in these roles. Additionally you have to have connections to get these jobs.

Hey guys, I am an aspiring electrician interested in getting into the IBEW. I know that my local isn’t currently bringing in apprentices, so I’ve been looking into a Construction Wireman (CW) role. What would the process be like for landing at CW position? What responsibilities does this role entail? Are these roles as competitive as the apprenticeships? Would I be able to travel for work? Hey guys, I recently got laid off from my nonunion job. I’ve been trying to figure out where to go from here. I am interested in the union, but I know my local is not currently hiring for apprenticeships. I would like to eventually get in an apprenticeship, but right now I’ll be happy just getting back in the field as soon as possible. Does the IBEW hire helpers, material handlers, etc? How do you guys get these travel jobs? it seems like lots of guys are getting them, yet they are seemingly heavily gatekept. I keep applying on online job boards like RoadDogJobs, Tradesman International, etc. but I never hear anything back. How do you travelers get these gigs?

How are the average people doing it? The cost of living is insane, the job market sucks, heck even the dating market is cooked. How are people still intertwining and financially affording having children??

Hey guys. I am an apprentice electrician that was laid off from a nonunion shop last year. I was bummed out, still am. I miss it. Not a day goes by that I don’t miss being out on a jobsite learning and challenging myself. I have been finding it so difficult to secure an apprentice/helper position.
