Stoner review (loved it with my soul)

How do I fckin explain this?

I started reading this book in my university classes - whenever it seemed boring. Well, it's boring most of the time, so I read it during and inbetween classes and during the break time. Afterwards, I didn't have much time with gym and studies, along with fatigue.

I finished it in 2-3 days.

So, coming back to it, the book is a solid 20/10. A lot of people say that "nothing happened" in this book. A lot of things happened, actually. You just gotta perceive it that way. We saw a boy grow from his small farm village with his parents, to a man who became a professor in English literature.

>!If there's any character I hated, it has to be Edith. I lowkey believe, she's a bipolar and had some loose screws in her head. The hypersexuality, mood swings and her repeated cruelty on Stoner, when he started staying home, her histerical sessions - and she even took away Grace from Stoner and destroyed her life with drinks, pregnancy and what not; totally stripping her off of her innocence. She couldn't bear Grace studying with Stoner in his study, her whims of buying a house, I felt hell bad when Stoner looked at Grace's empty desk in his study. She even took Stoner away from his study, which he built with so much care and attentiveness. If there's any instance, any situation where I'm gonna support extramarital affairs, it's this one. I, so badly, wanted Stoner to end up with Katherine Driscoll. Poor guy felt that love from her which he deserved. But, Lomax, that SOB (the book calls him that, xD), made them end their beautiful love story, just because he carried that grudge from Walker incident. Everyone knew that Walker was in the wrong. I believe that the feud between Lomax and Stoner started ever since the former opened up to the latter after being drunk at that party. And Lomax and Walker's shared sorrow of disability probably made Lomax even more vulnerable when Stoner failed walker (Note- this is entirely my account, the book didn't explain why Walker and Lomax were close to the extent of Lomax defending him whenever he could). !<

>!And I loved it, that in the second or third last chapter, he finally got to hold her book which was dedicated to W.S, i.e. William Stoner.!<

>!I admire Gordom Finch and William Stoner's friendship a lot. Dave Masters- we didn't get much of him but I deeply regretted his loss. He wanted to visit France but he ended up getting killed there. I feel most bad for Grace. Her life got destroyed thanks to her mother but I really wish, she had a good life apart from her alcoholic habits. !<

>!The speech that Stoner gave on his last day, his cancer, the way he embraced his death, the brief encounter with Lomax and the end where he and Edith forgave each other. Stoner, thinking of his first meeting with Edith, him reminding Grace of her days studying with him in his study. Man, so heart- wrenching. Very few books have made me cry and I was trying to control my tears in class.!<

This book is a solid read. In some parts, it might feel boring (as per me), but well it's worth it. The entire account of a life, forty years of his career in the university, to his death. I love this book. 20/10 recommend

Does anyone know where I can buy law books in Dehradun?

I recently started my BA.LLB in Doon and I'm looking for some stores where I can buy specific law books, given that 2-3 of them are not available online. Like, they've been out of stock for a long time.

So, can anyone tell me, any bookstore where I can find law books?

So fckin embarrassed 😭😭

My first day of law school starts tomorrow.

Aaj timetable diye hn for all the students, divided into sections A & B of BA LLB hons. And hum me se kisi ko identity card nhi mili hai, so I'm like "Okay, let's call this prof". College se bataya gaya hai that whenever in case of any doubt, call this prof.

I have talked with him twice only, first in December when he conducted my interview and then I called him just a few days ago regarding orientation. Everything was chill, and I didn't think much.

Today I called him again, asking that section kaha se pata chalega agar I'd cards hi nhi mili hai to!😭 And he asked "aap kon bol rhe?" I said that I'm studying BA.LLB in this college and he asks, "aapko pata hai aap kisse baat krr rhi?" I said "yeah" and I told him his name that I'm speaking with this person na?

The whole conversation is very polite, from his side as well as my side. Then he asks "Fir good evening kon bolega beta?"😭😭

I mean HE'S SO FCKIN RIGHT IT'S BASIC COURTESY WHEN YOU'RE SPEAKING WITH A PROF. How tf can I forget this😭 maybe I haven't been in touch with any educational institution be it school or college the last 4 years (22-26' coz I was prepping for NEET and CLAT) and mere dimag se nikl gya bhai basic formality and salutations.

Thankfully he's very polite and understanding but now I'm embarrassed af. He didn't ask me my name so I'm glad 😭

My favourite writer mentioned in The Hindu

His passing away came as a shock to me as he's been one of my favourite writers.

However I saw this news in yesterday's paper. Made me feel good🥹

This is why I don't share my stuff with anyone

I gave my umbrella to this girl whom I met in college orientation just a few hours ago. She asked for it, saying that she and her friend wanted to eat lunch outside and it's been raining like crazy in Dehradun since morning. I was like Yaa sure, take it, give me ur number so that we can stay in touch. She said that she and her friend will be returning after 10-20 min. I was like okay, and I had to get some meds too, so I told her that I'll be eating lunch at the canteen, uske baad bahar jaani hai mujhe bhi, so please time se aa jaana.

Well, she arrived 40 minutes later. I had called her twice and she didn't pick up. Worst case, I couldn't get my medicines as the orientation was about to begin. I have migraine issues and I'm already having a headache.

I don't get this- why can't people be responsible when they are with other people's stuff? Like fr?

I won't share my stuff with people now. I might be a rude and selfish biatch my whole clg life but I just can't stand irresponsible people.

They were right when they said Higashino is a master of the form

Ahh, how do I even begin?

This book started boring and along with my incredible reading slump, it took like 5 days to finish completely. Well, I finished it yesterday only after reading some 250 pages in a day after having procrastinated endlessly. This is my 4th Higashino novel.

The story became more gripping as time went by and the morale question it carried- the messy relationship between a son and his father, the emotional teenage phase, the crimes which teenagers commit unknowingly and the silent love which a father has for his child, and not to forget the everlasting love between a couple despite being poverty stricken. >!Then comes the unraveling of the mystery...how a 3 year old accident is connected to a present day murder.!< I'm sorry, I'm not really good with words but I hope you'll understand.

Also, I'm in love with Kyoichiro Kaga🙈that man is sexy af. First time in my life, I've this crush on a fictional character. Damn this man is smart. It's a shame that out of 12 books in the Kyoichiro Kaga series, only 4 have been translated so far. I really hope for more translations of Higashino's works.

Gonna read Newcomer next.

Y'all can debate all you want but living alone has been the second most peaceful thing in my life so far (read the body)

The only cons are-

  1. You'll miss ghar ka khana

  2. You'll miss your parents.

  3. You might miss your hometown and old friends (I don't love my hometown nor I had good memories to make friends, so it doesn't apply to me).

I shifted to a completely new city for my studies just 1 month back. It hasn't even been a month yet, tbh. 27 days to be exact. I'm 1644 km away from home.

The pros-

  1. Responsibility shapes you. I never did a single thing at home, but now I wake up early, make my bed, call the cleaning waale bhaiya to mop the room, and I cook my own food too. I go to the gym and I eat good food. Ghar me to pta nhi bed se hilti nhi thi :)

  2. You have a better understanding of finances. I had saved up from the last 6-7 months after my CLAT in December so that I can decorate my room. Aab ghar se sufficient paise mile the (just this month only so that I can buy furniture, bedsheet , grocery and other spices needed for cooking, books for my college and all).

  3. Freedom. The biggest thing. I don't have to inform anyone before going out, no restriction on clothes or anything. Now ofc, my parents know what I wear and all, but they don't care since "society" doesn't apply somewhere where people don't know you.

  4. Personal "me" time. I don't know about the ones living in joint families, they probably have it harder. But for me, I'm happy living in my own space for which I'm responsible.

  5. My home environment was toxic, like very toxic. My parents were good to me but they constantly fought with each other. I'm glad to have left and somehow being away improved my relations with them.

Idk about people who are earning but probably it's even better for them.

P.s: The first most peaceful thing in my life is being single 😂

My first classic 🥹

I got this in 2018, and this was also my first flipkart order🥹 I loved Little women ever since I read the abridged version for children in my school library and finally when I wa promoted to class 8 (in 2018), my parents got me this book, and obviously I had to order, they weren't tech-savvy back then.

Funnily, it still tops my favourite books till this date. >!The death of Beth, Meg's marriage, Jo's marriage, Amy's marriage with Laurie, their father coming back from war...!<this book still remains very very very close to my heart. Wanna get Good Wives and Little Men too, and idk how that will be, but this still tops my list even after 8 long yearsss.

Completed my birthday gift to myself

Got the Freida McFadden to get out of my reading slump (and yes, it worked).

I loveddd, loved and loved Dostoyevsky after reading his Crime and Punishment (Constance Garnett's translation) along with Tolstoy's short stories like Kreutzer Sonata and The Death of Ivan Ilych. That piqued my interest in Russian classic literature.

Along with that Charles Dickens is my favourite english author and his David copperfield>>>

Never heard about Moby Dick though. Will try it out soon enough but the plot seems intriguing. Same goes for Stoner. The Potrait of a lady, I read it long ago in my school library and finally got the og classic. Also I have a thing for books with a plot of extramarital affairs, hence Anna Karenina (and ofc my love for Tolstoy) and Madame Bovary 😂. Might try the OG Lady Chatterley's lover by D.H Lawrence. Also yeah, Lawrence is one of my most sought after writers after I read his Women in Love. Might get Lady Chatterley's lover and Sons and Lovers by him later.

P.S: My birthday is still 2.5 months away😂

My humble collection

My collection is nothing when compared to the people in this sub, but yeah this is what it is. Planning to get more books and another bookshelf once I'm done reading everything that's left

Got myself some advance gifts for my upcoming birthday

My birthday is still 2 months away but somehow I had some money left today so I got some books which were on my list for quite some time. And guess who's broke now?

Finally got my own bookshelf

So I shifted to a new city and this is my first own bookshelf that I got with my entire collection 🥹

(I have filled with some of my law books, since I'm a law student, to fill up the space but will remove them, once I get more books, which is not gonna happen immediately lol).

The bookshelf is a bit wobbly but it's quite sturdy overall. Got a great deal from Amazon 🥂

Did carpentry for the first time (swipe for the results)

I shifted to a pg outside my city and I needed a new table 😭 the one they provided, I didn't like the aesthetics of it so I decided to get one of my own.

So I had ordered a table from my home only, it arrived after I reached there and I kid you not, it was the most difficult thing I did for a grueling 5 hours and that too during my periods (gotta show my uterus who the real bad bitch is💅🏼). In the process I got my skin teared up and I hit the hammer on my finger, same finger btw, twice. TWICE. I was wincing in pain and I was lowkey borderline frustrated but finally at 1:30 AM today, it was done. The table looks beautiful. My stuff is yet to arrive and I have to do this same carpentry for a bookshelf that I've ordered 😭.

Now I'm treating myself with chocolates.

Reached Dehradun finally 🥹

I had made a post a day before of me leaving Kolkata for Dehradun for my studies (again, I hope I never go back).

Well I finally reached here today (pata hai aaj kya hua) 🥹. The journey was hectic and the train got delayed by 2 hours. But a "friend" picked me up from the station and unloaded them in the auto. He went on his way and I reached my PG. It was a long journey of 1 hour and more but I finally got here, ate my dinner, got fresh and now I'm doing good, will go to bed soon.

Good night all, cheers to me for starting a fresh new journey 🥂

Train read?

I have some 26 hours of journey remaining and I'm planning to read this. With this it will be my 1st read of July. Looking forward to this

u/cutiepiepastry_ — 2 months ago

Left my hometown finally 🥀

Pata hai aaj kya hua

I got on my train for Dehradun from Howrah, and finally left my hometown for studies (and I really hope that I never come back). I have memories of a bad school life from here, bad friends, my three years of traumatising entrance exam preparation, all in this state and city. Finally it is done and that phase is over and I'm looking forward to a new journey.

My mother was damn emotional, she was crying, and papa apparently stayed up till 2-3 AM thinking that I won't be there anymore and parents hugged me too 😭 didn't have a great social life so far but I've got loving parents after all.

Cheers 🥂

Completed The Devotion of Suspect X finally

I had started reading this 4 days ago and had just completed some 60 something pages. The book started off slow (at least for me). After that I became heavily occupied and along with some procrastination, I finally started reading it last night from where I had left the book. I had completed up to page 250 when I slept.

Today I had this train journey of nearly 2 hours and I completed the book, the remaining 120 something pages. The book was gripping and I held out till the end and damn the Holy mother of plot twists. I was intrigued till the end and the book's title definitely justifies the story.

"The devotion of Suspect X" given that "X" is >!the symbol used in mathematics and our suspect here is a mathematician. The devotion here, shows his immense devotion towards Yasuko- who wasn't even aware of his feelings, yet saved him from.committing sui*cide. The lengths he went towards to protect her and the plot twist, again.!< My god.

A 10/10 read.

Op is leaving her hometown for studies 💅🏼

Okay so originally I'm from Kolkata and I'll be shifting to Dehradun (localites please gaali naa de I won't ruin that beautiful place). It's like my dream come true.

Pata hai aaj kya hua, the packers and movers company waale arrived, they packed all my stuff. There were total 11 boxes + my bicycle lmao. Majorly were filled with books, skincare, makeup and notebooks. I hoarded many notebooks and books (bookaholic and studyaholic). Train is on the 3rd of July and will be arriving soon.

I had always wanted to study outside my state and finally it's happening. My mother is emotional and aab kya hi krr skte? Looking forward to missing my home and ghar ka khana more after I've left (won't miss this place fs).

Reading The Devotion of Suspect X while I wait at the doctor's

I've read 2 Keigo Higashino books previously and this is my first one, also considered his best work so far. 20 pages in and let's see.
