Been watching these PDX coyote pups torment their parents for two months. Now it’s payback time.

Toby and Viggo’s first trip to the dog park together

Toby (my new dog) and Viggo’s first trip to the dog park together. I’d been meaning to take them for a while, but wanted to test the waters with a few walks first.

They did great. Despite having twice Viggo’s stamina and speed, Toby let old dog Viggo have the ball.

So much tongue ... someone’s gonna trip over one eventually.

NOTE: Hope everyone enjoys the photo. Sorry there are so many. I have about 75 more. So hard to pick.

The knife gods have smiled upon me this week

Four new folders: the Vosteed Zander, Vosteed Thornton TLL, Gecko Pictus V2 XL and the freaking amazing OTM Ire V2.

The stars aligned. I got to keep Toby.

Meet Toby, a nearly 3-year-old German Shepherd born in Hillsboro, Oregon.

You might remember him from my Jaw Wars photos with Viggo, where the two of them looked like fanged lunatics trying to bite the joy out of each other.

I’m not exaggerating when I say Toby is one of the best dogs I’ve ever watched. He’s so well behaved, rarely barks, listens like an eager student, gets along with everyone and seems afraid of absolutely nothing. Very balanced temperament. The kind of dog you’d trust around kids.

His previous owners were heartbroken to let him go after one of them unexpectedly became allergic to dogs, which is awful. I felt terrible taking him — and also like I had just won the German Shepherd lottery.

Every time Toby stayed with me, saying goodbye sucked.

Now I don’t have to.

The stars aligned on this one.

This is what joy looks like. Marshall the pit bull and Pepper the doodle, deep in a round of bitey-face.

I love taking photos of dogs playing and capturing their ridiculously fierce faces. Dogs don’t get much happier.  This round of Jaw Wars features Marshall, a 3-year-old pit bull mix, and Pepper, a 5-year-old Goldendoodle, locked in a dramatic battle for control of the guest bed in my office — where no dogs are allowed.

They're just playing, right?

Jaw Wars IV: That’s joy pouring through those jaws — not drool!

Finally, saw a coyote with the naked eye

First one I’ve seen in Portland, Ore., and I've been living in the city 21 years. This guy is the father in the family of seven I’ve been tracking with trail cameras for the last couple of months. He stopped to look at me three times as he walked away. Probably recognized my scent and thought, “So, you’re the one who’s been strapping little boxes to trees in our resting area.” Wish I had brought a bigger lens.

Nanook, a white shepherd from 'beyond the wall' has joined my German pup pack.

A look inside my House of Hair over the last few days, featuring six canines mostly of German descent and one brave, non-shedding human of Idaho descent.

The guest list includes, in photo 1 from left, Nanook, the Great White Shepherd from beyond the Wall; Henry the Dubious Doberman; Viggo mi Amigo; and Toby the Good. In addition, there’s Kai the corgi and Zeebo the Tiny Torpedo in the later photos.

Photos from my week with 3 German shepherds and a Doberman digging a hole to China, playing hard and living their best lives

In the first photo the dogs are from left: Toby, Piper, Henry and Viggo. They're all like brothers from different mothers. Viggo's my dog. The other 3 I'm just watching. I loved it. Can't wait for them to come back.

Just what my pack of German shepherds needed: a Doberman named Henry.

We’re one schnauzer away from a full German summit.

I watch a lot of dogs. Never three German Shepherds at once, though. Now I want to keep all three forever.

Talk about the three amigos ... or should I say die drei Amigos? This week at Bark with Mark, Toby and Piper joined Viggo and me for a few days. From left are Toby, Piper and Viggo — a sister and two brothers from different mothers. Looking forward to Jaw Wars. So much hair. Enough shedding to build a fourth dog.

Viggo and Forte: Brothers from different German mothers

Forte, the blacker GSD came over for 4 days while his family was on vaca. Such a great dog. Fit right in. Total gentleman, wise and thoughtful. Viggo and I are sad to see him go.

What's everyone think of the new ArtisanCutlery Mousebird, TLL, with crystallized ti scales?

I think it’s one of the coolest child-sized knives I’ve ever seen. 3" blade. Subtle front flipper. My kind of jimping. And if you hold it just right, it rings like a tuning fork. In videos it sounds like the best ringer I’ve ever heard. S35VN at 60–62 HRC. Solid steel but not sexy. Wish it was a inch or two bigger.
