Crispy Tofu Salad with Homemade Tahini Dressing

Ingredients

For the Salad:

• Red Leaf Lettuce: Fresh, washed, and torn into bite-sized pieces

• Cucumbers: Sliced thinly (English cucumbers work well)

• Crispy Tofu:

• 1 block firm tofu, pressed and cut into cubes

• 1/4 cup cornstarch for coating

• Oil for frying

For the Homemade Tahini:

• 1 cup white sesame seeds

• 1-2 tablespoons neutral oil (optional for creaminess)

• Pinch of salt (optional)

For the Tahini Sauce:

• 1/2 cup homemade tahini (from above)

• 1/4 cup water (adjust for desired consistency)

• 2 tablespoons lemon juice

• 1 garlic clove (minced)

• Salt to taste

• Handful fresh dill

• Optional: a dash of cumin or paprika for extra flavor

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Homemade Tahini:

• Toast the Sesame Seeds (optional): In a dry skillet over medium heat, toast the sesame seeds until golden and fragrant, stirring frequently (about 3-5 minutes). Let cool.

• Blend: Place cooled seeds in a food processor and blend for 1-2 minutes until crumbly. Add oil if desired, and blend for another 2-3 minutes until smooth. Add a pinch of salt, blend briefly, then set aside.

  1. Prepare the Tofu:

• Press the tofu to remove excess moisture. Cut into cubes and coat lightly with cornstarch.

• Heat oil in a pan over medium heat and fry the tofu until golden and crispy on all sides. Drain on paper towels.

  1. Make the Tahini Sauce:

• In a bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup of the homemade tahini, 1/4 cup of water, lemon juice, minced garlic, fresh dill, and salt until smooth. Adjust water for your desired consistency.

  1. Assemble the Salad:

• In a large bowl, combine the red leaf lettuce and cucumber slices.

• Top with crispy tofu.

• Drizzle the homemade tahini sauce over the salad and toss gently to combine.

Conservative vegans exist, and no, that’s not a contradiction.

I went vegan for one reason: I don’t believe animals should suffer for my food choices. That’s the whole ideology behind my diet. “A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast” (Proverbs 12:10). Compassion for animals isn’t a left or right issue, it’s a basic measure of character.

I’m also politically conservative. Whenever that comes out in vegan spaces online, I get treated like I don’t belong, sometimes with outright hostility, over politics that have nothing to do with why I’m vegan in the first place.

The irony isn’t lost on me. The same people preaching tolerance and acceptance are often the first to attack me the moment they find out how I vote. Meanwhile, in conservative circles, I’ve never once been made to feel unwelcome for being vegan. Live and let live, they don’t care what’s on my plate or who I voted for. It’s the “accepting” side that keeps failing to practice what it preaches.

Let’s be clear: attacking someone for their political beliefs or core values isn’t activism, it’s bullying. You don’t get to claim the moral high ground on animal suffering while treating a fellow human with contempt because their voting record doesn’t match yours. That’s not acceptable, full stop.

There’s nothing about “reduce animal suffering” that requires a specific stance on taxes, immigration, or the size of government. Plenty of traditionally conservative values point toward veganism: personal responsibility, distrust of centralized industrial systems (factory farming being a textbook example), religious traditions of stewardship and compassion toward animals, skepticism of corporate agribusiness.

Veganism grew up mostly in left-leaning, countercultural spaces, so a lot of its language and assumptions came from there. That’s a historical fact about the movement, not a logical requirement of the diet. Caring about animal welfare isn’t a partisan position, and it shouldn’t be treated like a loyalty test.

If you want to talk about animal welfare or factory farming, I’m here for it. If you just want to attack me over a label, that says more about you than it does about me.

As a Christian, I close with this:

“Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.” (Matthew 7:1-2)
