PSA - be up to date about Super Typhoon Baci

Looks like it will impact Taiwan end of this upcoming week around 7/10, but more importantly the size of the storm will cause issues much earlier than potential landfall. This is equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane and it hasn’t even hit Guam yet.

This is on top of all the flooding from just 2 weeks ago, and that was caused by the same track path of a typhoon that pulled a ton of moisture from the southwest of Taiwan.

Stay safe and give yourself flexibility if you’re visiting Taiwan middle of July.

PSA - walking time from economy parking to terminal area

From economy parking bus area to T7 takes about 20-25 minutes to walk. Took me 17 today because I caught every walk sign and I knew how to walk this route.

T1 would have taken 5-7 minutes less. Other terminals will vary, but T5/6 would benefit from cutting across on west side of Sepulveda instead of waiting for crosswalk signals in the central terminal area.

A FYI in case you have a bit of time and don’t mind getting some steps in.

Was forced to walk this morning because the buses out of economy parking was slow and at least 2 bus loads of travelers were waiting with bags.

Is this clear coat starting to be compromised/failing?

My car is a 2021 Volvo. Today after I cleaned off what I thought was 2 spots of bird poop, I noticed there is a small raised area left. This is on the roof.

After cleaning with detail spray it still is there. Feels like it is on top of the paint.

Should add, car has ceramic coating professionally applied last year.

Is this a sign of clear coat starting to fail?

Any feedback appreciated.

After all the movies, hundreds of hours in the game, finally reading the actual book.

Here we go….

edit: I am well aware of what I am getting into. I've spent many hours doing my own research about the Dune universe, about all the changes of books vs movies, and even spent more time than I want to admit on Quinn's Ideas YT channel. Reading the book now is mostly just to close the loop and enjoy this for what it is: the spark that started what I truly love, Star Wars.

PSA - if going to Japan in summer/typhoon season, build in buffer days to your trip

I've been giving out some version of this advice for folks that have a packed schedule when going to Japan, but I don't say it just for the sake of saying it.

Typhoon season is a real issue in East Asia, and you can have little/no warning when it affects your trip.

Case in point: Tropical Depression Jangmi (soon to be Typhoon Jangmi) is on a path towards Okinawa, with potential impact for Kyushu + mainland Japan middle of next week. It's early in the season but this is becoming more common as we are dealing with a potential "Super El Nino" this summer.

Adjust accordingly, and if you must travel during the summer season, be prepared for these things by having some built-in flexibility to your plans, especially if your flight is impacted. 1 or 2 days disruption at airports can linger for days/weeks.

Retrofitting 98+ roll hoops to my late ‘97

My 1997 2.8 did not come with factory roll hoop, so a while back I bought an entire 98+ setup to swap into my car.

As my car was a late 1997 MY car, the bracket bolt threaded holes are already on the car for a relatively easy install.

I did not realize until I started that the rear speaker size is different from base stereo to the HK system, so I had to buy new speakers from Crutchfield to finish the install. I chose to leave out a subwoofer upgrade for now.

Hardest part of this is trying to remove/install 30 year old plastic, as many pieces are very brittle from age. Zero fabrication needed if your car already has the outer roll hoop brackets.

Edit: clarified wording on bracket threaded holes.

Changing shocks at ~173k miles

Changing out stock shocks on my Z3 - one owner (aunt in law) until 2024.

The ones off the car were genuine BMW, but completely dead.

This will ride so much nicer!
