Piranha II The Spawning (1982)

I love the premise of 1 and 2 simply because of the absurdity and how unbelievably believable of a premise it feels - like yeah, of course the United States military would have tried genetically modifying piranhas as a way to fight the Vietcong and it ended up horrifically backfiring and killing civilians, that sounds like something our military would do while grasping at straws. Not realistic in any sense, but something I can totally wrap my head around being a plausible scenario for a movie of this nature.

Piranhas, on paper, sound like a really awesome concept for a movie, and not just the realm of horror. Like if there was an action movie with a brief scene where they traverse a piranha infested water source, it would work well, it’s just when making a movie revolve entirely around them that I think it loses the scare factor. They’ve developed over time the reputation of being these vicious cheetahs of the waters, and you would think it would make for some interesting plot lines. I think the issue boils down to “we have a great idea on paper, but it isn’t translating to the big screen”

Factor in the corny appearance of these practical effects, factor in the stereotypical ocean bubbling/water turning red, and you see in real time how this cool concept starts losing steam. And it doesn’t ruin the movie entirely, you still have hot babes, cheap laughs and horrific deaths, but I feel like these piranha movies have a great kickoff, but the final results are underwhelming. I think a movie that goes the piranha route has to decide if they’re going the naked babe route like #2, or the “we gotta save the locals” route like #1

I would really love a movie that takes piranhas in a direction where it becomes an actually suspenseful experience, because right now it feels like they all start out strong in theory, but fall short sticking the landing. I don’t know how possible this is, because there are clear limitations on what can be done in terms of practical effects without animal cruelty, and there are lines in the sand of CGI usage where it would deflate any suspense.

Do y’all mind if I proudly show off my new moose baby?

Forgive me mods if this isn’t allowed, but I thought this moment was too precious not to share.

I’m using the Naturalist add-on and had no idea you could tame the moose, until I cautiously approached one and casually climbed on top. I did some further digging and I think I can even put a saddle on one. Their health bar is insane, it’s double your regular HP!

I named the mama Astrid and the papa Mackenzie. Any name suggestions for my lil’ baby? I thought Methuselah would be a little pecular lol

I couldn’t stop laughing when the cameraman started hyperventilating

This might be the oldest found footage movie I’ve seen now, and while there is a lot cheesiness at play, this was still enjoyable for a movie that takes place primarily in a single location from start to finish.

While everyone was freaking out, the daughter showing her drawing of the “man in the window” (or whatever her descriptor was) was probably the most unsettling part of the movie, but then they flip around the artwork to the camera and I just started cracking up again.

I’m thinking of trying out Cannibal Holocaust, because I’m curious about some oldies that were made when camcorders and tapes were the pre-dominant method of video recording, any suggestions in that realm of old school FF?

Imagine eating nothing but hot dogs at the soup kitchen during the month of July

This article is over 15 years old at this point, but I genuinely hoped for more promising results when searching to see if the hot dog eating contest donated to local food banks and shelters in order to balance out their gluttony

yeah this is a totally normal rollout, there is nothing wrong with milking consumers dry!

scientists are saying that this is the most blatant and egregious cash grab in the history of gaming

When trying to acquire the Woodworking Tools, what location do you prefer going to and why?

I’ve currently got three different survival runs where I’ve acquired the necessary tools and weaponry to survive, so I’m ready whenever to put on my big boy pants and make my first ever trek to ZoC, Sundered Pass for the camera, Blackrock for looting, etc.

I’d like to try and get the woodworking tools so I can craft some furniture, and I’d like to get it in the least hectic way possible, but since I’m fully prepared for the worst, I’m not worried about getting my hands dirty - or bloody if it comes to that.

What are your favorite podcast episodes where Matt and Ryan are guests

I’ve heard their episodes on Chuckle Sandwich already, I’m aware of their guest episode on Hasan’s pod, are there any pods I’m blissfully unaware of them being a featured guest on???

As a Canadian, it is baffling that he hasn’t played TLD yet, and I’m begging him to give it a try

A game made by Canadians, an environment based in Canada, and game mechanics that are impacted by brutally cold Canadian winters. A game that has a compelling story mode, but it is extremely popular for the sandbox mode

It isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I’ll be damned if I don’t pester him to give it a go

Rebel Without A Cause (1955) — WTF was this movie man

Watched this on in-flight entertainment because I had always seen James Dean posters and tumblr posts glorifying him as a teenage heartthrob, I put it on thinking I could close my eyes and fall asleep to an oldie, but I found myself glued and had so many mixed feelings afterwards, and I don’t know if I was disappointed or underwhelmed.

For the pretty boy actor that he was, I can understand the hype, he was the Timotheé Chalamet of his time. With that being said, I feel like I had tuned out in the first five minutes when they revealed why Plato was being questioned by the police. Yeah, lock that sick fuck up and throw away the keys

The game of chicken reminded me of the knife fight in the Beat It music video — this means nothing, but I felt like it was worth mentioning in my review.

This movie is not a comedy, but in terms of how this movie has aged, it definitely has unintentional comedic moments. I really wished this movie followed a stereotypical redemption arc, because I genuinely wanted James Dean’s character to change for the better. And I guess the ending demonstrated that he had (morally) changed for the better, and rose to the occasion when it mattered the most?

The confrontation with his father after the game of chicken felt rather hollow, but looking back on it, I really feel for the distress and mixed emotions of guilt that James Dean expresses. It is only his first day in a new school ffs, and his tires get slashed, and he is already involved with a student’s fatal demise

I’d like to believe that the suspense of this movie hit like crack when it first released, but after 71 years I would give it a generous C

posting my full Euro haul

Despite losing one tin and one beer to travel complications, I’m pretty content with what I was able to bring back home. Tinned fish, beer, and sweets — I’m really exposing where my interests were while shopping lol

I’ve never had tinned mussels or cod liver before; aside from the usual pickled veggies/cream cheese crackers and charcuterie, what do yall normally serve your cod/mussels with?

Definitely not going to have to worry about getting scurvy

Baked trout stuffed with diced apples — a first time eating trout, not a bad fish at all; would definitely do again, maybe season the apples first, maybe scoring it and inserting the orange slices

What is the best place to grab a kebab, pølsehorns, or any type of street food after drinking?

When I last visited, I was at a bar just outside the red light district, and I was thrilled to discover the kebab place across the street accepted Euros, which allowed me to use currency I thought would be useless.

I’m from America and trying to experience cuisine that isn’t easily available here, so you can skip the taco/italian recommendations. I saw in another post Kuku and Gaza Grill, but any suggestions are welcomed
