Super Monkey Ball 3D - The Worst Monkey Ball Game

I am a big fan of monkey ball since the beginning, Monkey Ball 1 + 2 and even Deluxe were so replayable because the puzzle based designs lead to new and creative challenges, I even fairly enjoyed the GBA counterpart, Super Monkey Ball Jr.

Pretty much every game after Deluxe the series was a complete roller coaster of quality, where some became as fairly solid like Banana Splitz, or complete mediocrity like Monkey Ball Adventure. But there was one game in the series that I consider to be the worst game in the series by far…… SUPER MONKEY BALL 3D.

I’m gonna cut to the chase to explain why I dislike this game. The level design is horrible, being far too easy for monkey ball standards and just really boring and plays too safe. What made the original games so timeless is that they have a philosophy of easy to play difficult to master, and resulted in some really well crafted levels you can tell had care to them. Ever since banana blitz, the stage design got less interesting, and 3d really dropped the ball. 3Ds are exceedingly boring and basic by comparison, which you might think Isnt a bad thing, but it makes it significantly less fun than the other games

Ah yes, the party games, another incredible aspect of the original games. Each and every one of them has a shocking amount of depth and you can easily get lost in them for hours. Pretty much all of them control great and never really get boring especially monkey target. Coming off of step and roll and banana blitz, you wouldn’t think they would fuck up the Minigames in 3d right? No… no… they did. There are only 2 party games and both of them are terrible clunky ripoffs of Mario kart and smash bros. I got to give the game one thing tho, I like how you can choose different costumes in the party games, but somehow not in the main game?

Overall, Super Monkey Ball 3D is a mess on all fronts, will it has some good graphics and good music, and nice costumes, that doesn’t save it’s underwhelming campaign, bland levels, and absolutely terrible Mini-games, if you want a recommendation, I wouldn’t really recommend it unless if your doing some kind of monkey ball marathon.

This game is just so watered down compared to what the series once was, and I give it a 3/10. There were way better handheld monkey ball games before it released and there were certainly better monkey ball games now. Take it from me.
