Is anyone growing meat, milk, eggs, etc. to support your family? And fruit and veg? How common is it for homesteaders?

I always think of this as the goal of homesteading - feed your family from the homestead. A chicken or 2 per person, one pig for meat per year, one milking cow (additional animals as companions for your "working" animals). A garden, fruit trees and bushes.

For you guys, is this your ideal goal? How close are you to getting there? How long did it take?

I know things can seem more straightforward than they actually are, once you put the plan into action. I feel like I have experience and competence with all of the pieces, but haven't put them together yet (looking for a property).

I'd love to hear y'all's thoughts and experiences. Are there things you tried that just weren't worth it? Or that you didn't enjoy so you stopped? Have you found people to barter with (eggs for milk, etc?) Thx!

Rehoming vs BA?

Ugh... Female, around 6yo, reactive, 75% asd, 25% Boerbel. Not mine. A risk to rehome... There just aren't people lining up to adopt a reactive ASD. BA SUCKS, but I fear it's the best option for a bad situation... Please only actual ASD owners, is it a breed that you just don't mess with when they go bad?

Note: I have my own ASD who is wonderful, but I had to BA a previous dog who was a large GSD mix. It was the most responsible thing to do...

Help! Fix clipper slip? :(

The guard caught on a hidden mat, popped off, and I created a beautiful square hole in the side of a Newfie. I was clipping 1 inch. Are there any tricks to hide this? Should I cut 3/4 around it? Will any attempt make it worse? What do you say to the owner?? Crying emoji

Brattleboro town meetings - open meetings with anonymous voting

This article suggests that these 2 things conflict, but it seems like that's unnecessarily divisive. Both can easily be accommodated, and both make sense.

- voters want to attend meetings, not just have representatives attend. Makes complete sense.

- voters don't feel comfortable doing "hands up" voting - completely makes sense - and want to do anonymous voting.

These things absolutely make sense together. Anonymous voting reduces friction in the community, it prevents people being targeted for their opinion. Hands up voting is very old fashioned and frought.

I'm frustrated that the author of this article is representing it as "opposing" or "conflicting" things. They are not. The author is creating conflict where it is not necessary, stirring up stress, anxiety, dischord in a time when our whole country feels like it's burning down. It feels like more fear mongering, and it's disappointing.

Bavarian pretzels in the toaster!

I like the frozen Bavarian pretzels, but I don't love heating up the oven. So I tried popping one in the toaster and it worked! No salt on it, so I'm dipping in the salt. Easy and yummy!

Warm spots on legs? Feels like someone pressed a Hot Hands on leg. No infection, etc.

So, when I google this, tons of people are asking, but the answers are AI generated and don't address the issue.

There is no infection, no bruise, no swelling/inflammation, not an allergic reaction, no spider veins or vein issues. No cellulitis, neuropathy, etc. Not tender, doesn't spread. No rash, bumps, redness.

It's not painful, like DVT. Just a nice warm sensation in one small area, like the size of a hot hands. It lasts about a minute. The areas move around. There is never pain, swelling, etc. associated. Only warmth. It is pleasant, but curious. It's been happening for a few days. I'm 56.

I keep thinking someone turned the seat heater on, or a dog is breathing on me, etc but there's never an external source for the warmth.

I suspect this is not a described phenomenon in medical literature, since it's not something that doctors would take seriously. It's been happening for a couple of days.

Has anyone had this? Was it a precursor to anything?

I'll try to add edits and clarification below if needed.
