AKUS "New Favorite" came out 25 years ago on Aug. 14

I just learned that today was the 25th anniv. of Alison's "New Favorite" record. So I went down to the basement to get the record from the stacks 🎶 and to get some accompaniments 😋. My s.o. is at the other end of the house watching TV so I've taken the liberty of turning Alison up to a proper celebratory volume. :-) 🤘🔥🎶 This is bluegrass but it rocks. Bluegrass metal. Cranked on the Klipsch Cornwalls and it's f#n' great!

Gabor Szabo – "Spellbinder"

(1966, on Impulse! / 2026, on Verve Vault Series; remastered from the original analog tapes)

I found this album by accident. I discovered an original mono copy of this album a few years ago in a dollar bin at a flea market. It was very musty and looked warped ... very poor appearance and I think the seller may have actually given it to me for free.

It cleaned up well and since then it's been in regular rotation. It turned out to be great music! I knew a bit about Gabor Szabo but I like this a lot better than the other stuff I've heard from him.

Now the Verve Vault Series has reissued it. The reissue is the stereo version but it's very similar to the mono ... not an overdone stereo approach that was all to common in the early days of stereo mixes. Very enjoyable.

Gábor Szabó – guitar, vocals

Ron Carter – bass

Chico Hamilton – drums

Willie Bobo, Victor Pantoja – percussion

I read a comment from someone who'd taken a couple of smokes off Grisman's joint, saying he wound up staring at the wall while laughing non-stop. :-)

J Ward – "Angels & Men"

J Ward – "Angels & Men"

(2026, on Cridda Records (self released))

This record appeared in my mailbox today, sent unannounced by a dear friend. Brand new music self-released by his old college buddy, Jeff Ward.

Jeff plays in a band called the Longleaf Pine Nuts in Raleigh, NC. It's my understanding that the Nuts are pretty straightforward bluegrass. This record has the bluegrass instruments but I guess it'd be called Americana rather than bluegrass.

I've posted a few snaps of the liner notes to give a feel for Jeff's approach in making the record. Pretty cool.

I'll post a bit of audio in a comment.

Jesse Iaquinto (Fireside Collective) – mandolin

Tommy Maher (Fireside Collective) – resonator guitar

Andy Quinn (Redbud Bluegrass) – fiddle, harmony vocals

Lucas Ward (Redbud Bluegrass) – lead guitar, harmony vocals

Jeff Ward – rhythm guitar, lead vocals

All songs written by Jeff Ward

I think they like our yard because we've got a smorgasbord of pretty much every native and invasive plant/weed growing here.

I tried to replicate Neal Cassady's hammer. :-)

Neal Cassady was famous for being a crossover between the beat generation of the '50s and the hippies of the '60s. He inspired Jack Kerouac's book "On the Road" and drove Ken Kesey's bus, "Further."

I just discovered this sub and thought I'd post a project that I did a couple years ago.

I spent quite a bit of time searching for a hammer head that matched the picture of Neal Cassady with his famous hammer. The head that I found isn't exactly the same as in the photo of Neal but it's close enough for me.

It's a long pattern head that was in really poor condition. After a lot of work, it turned out pretty nice.

Over the last couple years, my bluing (done using MAPP gas heat and used motor oil) is not holding up as well as I had hoped. I'm waxing it to try to extend the life of the finish.

Question about removing blue overcoat material from IC leads before reflowing the solder (automotive gauge cluster PCB)

this is a screen shot from youtube

this is a photo of my gauge cluster PCB after I removed the blue overcoat from the four four-sided ICs

I'm planning to reflow the solder on some of the ICs on my Volvo's dashboard PCB. There is a blue overcoating on four large, four-sided ICs that I've mostly removed using isopropanol. However, I can still see some blue around the ICs.

How immaculate does this have to be, before fluxing & reflowing the leads of the ICs? I spent a long time removing the overcoat already and am wondering if I need to get every last bit of it off.

(Top pic is a screengrab from a youtube vid that I'm using as a reference; bottom pic is my PCB after removing the blue overcoat from the four large ICs)
