July 2, 1776: Independence resolution PASSES (12 colonies vote in favor, New York abstains)

July 2nd is what I truly consider to be America's Independence Day because it is the day the fateful Continental Congress vote concluded 250 years ago. The goal was unanimity which they got, though NY abstained until they had received specific instructions from their state legislature days later.

Around this time Ben Franklin, delegate from Pennsylvania, reportedly uttered the famous words, "We must, indeed, all hang together, or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately." Great Britain had already rejected the Olive Branch petition and suggested their airing of grievances constituted treason so this was the next logical step if there weren't going to back down.
