Out with the useless and in with the useful, Part 2

As posted here a couple weeks ago I removed the outside kitchen as it would never be used by us. This model trailer has a beautiful inside kitchen with 8’ of free counter space. We do mostly boondocking so a power station far outweighed the micro kitchen. Got the power station shelf installed. The heavy duty drawer slides came from Amazon. Rated for 250lbs. I like that my Firman Generator also fits on the shelf for travel storage if need be. The slides are self locking, both fully closed and opened. The 120 plugs (from the fridge and induction burner) are an extra bonus because whenever we’re plugged to shore power (at home) the power station can recharge from either outlet. Whenever we decide to sell the trailer I can reinstall the kitchen in about 10 minutes if the next owner wants it as OEM. Only thing left to do is to install a strap to secure the PS for traveling. I don’t think it really needs it but better safe than sorry.

What’s the difference between this n that?

A couple years ago I bought a “portable” Blackstone to take along on our travel trailer camping. After getting it home and assembled I discovered it weighed a metric shit ton. It lives out on the covered deck where it gets a fair amount of usage. Gave up the dream of taking a Blackstone with us. Saw this HB Professional cast iron griddle and thought this is it. Not having to mess with propane or load a heavy Blackstone is ideal. We can cook inside or outside on the nice days. Trailer has an outside plug exactly where it needs to be. I would get a folding table from Amazon to set it on. The future is here boys…..just looking for your blessings before proceeding. Is there a downside?

Who invented this?

What kind of a psychopath thought that fine threads on plastic was a great idea? This is the first trailer I’ve had with a detachable cord. All my other trailers had an attached cord that I could just push back inside. No fuss no muss. Always thought all the cool kids had the “new” twist lock cords on their fancy high end RV’s. Finally moved up to the fancy travel trailer world but trying to not cross thread that plastic ring nut is next to impossible. After a while I can convince it to finally thread on. Why wouldn’t they have a quarter turn lock not instead of this atrocity. Will I be arrested and charged by the travel trailer police if I don’t thread the thing on? What’s the purpose of threading it on?

Out with the useless and in with the useful.

Got this 2021 FR Vibe 26RK around three weeks ago. My wife and I have a nice place to boondock that we love and have been camping there for years. We use a generator but just got an Ecoflow power station so we can run everything in peace without the noise or fuel usage. We’ve only used it once so far and I put it in the front pass through compartment. It’s a bit of a nuisance to have it there because it needs to be kept at the hatch door for accessibility, so it blocks everything I need to get out to set up camp. Soooooo I asked my wife if we really needed or would ever use the outside micro kitchen. She said probably not. She gave me the royal nod to remove it and use it as a designated power station storage. I proceeded to drill the floor and install an RV cord hatch. The little pullout kitchen had a spray port which I mounted through the exterior wall so I could use the quick connect hose to spray whatever needs spraying. Yes it was scary drilling through the pristine exterior of the trailer. Check and recheck that it would be ok before drilling. Anyways…..the power station fits perfectly with room to store the power cord. There’s also enough room to store the generator in there if need be. Our beautiful granddaughter helped me. She has to be involved in anything that poppa is doing. FWIW I can replace everything back to original in 15 minutes. I redid the plumbing so I can put a new spray port where the original one was.

What’s the Difference?

Doing a mod on my 2021 FR Vibe. The green wire plug was for a single induction burner. The white wire plug was for a tiny bar fridge. Both for a small outdoor kitchen. Just wondering if there’s a difference in amperage or something. The green wire plug has a sticker that states its a GFCI plug. Maybe the green wire plugs are GFCI so the manufacturer would know at a glance what color goes to what? Anybody know for certain?

Frosty Root Beer.

Got a case of this around a month ago in Kingston Ontario. It’s awesome but sadly I don’t think it’s available anymore. Anyone know if it’s gone forever?

I’m Too Bright.

Would like to swap this switch out to a dimmer if I can. All LED lights as pictured. The lights all have a center on/off switch so I can turn them off individually if need be…..but I would like to dim them instead because they’re a tad on the bright side. I looked on Amazon.ca but cant find anything with a matching switch like pictured. I would like it to match because I’m only wanting to dim the living room, kitchen area. The main control panel sits just above this switch so it wouldn’t look feng shui if the switches were different and my OCD wouldn’t allow it anyways. Ideas? Are these style lights even dimmable?

Lemon Furniture Polish Part 2.

Ladies and gentlemen it brings me great sorrow to announce that the furniture polish was a no go after enduring last evening’s biblical rainfall. I was hoping that I had discovered a scientific breakthrough and at least get a nomination to some award in the advancement of polymers category. However the results are catastrophic and final. I would like to take this time to apologize to my fellow travel trailer enthusiasts and to whomever I may have misled by my claims of success. I beseech your forgiveness. God bless you all and have a great evening.

Apparently everything is junk or is it just my stuff?

I bought a 2015 Silverado last year. It’s been a great truck so far with no issues. Tows my 30’ trailer relatively easily. According to Reddit I shouldn’t even start it. Lifters are guaranteed to explode at any second along with the transmission. May as well just scrap it now instead of driving it. Same goes with anything travel trailer related. Anything I post is instantly garbage and should be replaced immediately even though it’s relatively new and working fine. The oven: garbage, Dometic shitter: garbage, Dometic awning: garbage, 12 volt fridge: yep garbage, vanity faucets: garbage. Shower faucet: junk, Suburban HWT: garbage. If something needs a simple repair or a $20 part, apparently it’s junk now. The negative world of Redditors I guess !!

Let’s talk shitters

On my newly acquired trailer the toilet sprays so violently the water sprays up and spills out onto the floor. Dometic foot flush. The fitting is ridged (second pic) and definitely wont turn or allow any adjustment. Any ideas of how to prevent this?

EDIT: crisis averted!! I simply bent the two little upper baffle tabs down where the water leaves the jet valve (pic 2). The plastic was relatively soft which allowed me to bend it with a pair of pliers. Flushed it several times with zero spillage. Still left with a beautifully violent water pressure to clean the bowl.

Cord pass through?

Just getting into the power station world. My power station fits in the front pass thru storage compartment. TT has a detached power cord. The last camping trip I just simply left the hatch open enough to plug in the 30 amp cord to the power station. Obviously this isn’t ideal due to theft and or a rainy day. I ordered a replacement cord pass thru so I can mount it in the floor of the storage compartment so the cord can come up from underneath…..but it’s a little snug. Only one end of the plug will go through….unfortunately it’s the female end that has to go to the rear of the trailer to the plug….so the 30’ cord will have to be pulled down through the storage compartment. Looked on Amazon for a larger size but apparently there’s no such thing, that I can find. A 3.5” inside diameter is what I need but I can only find 3.2”. Any ideas or a solutions? FWIW I haven’t cut the hole in the floor yet.

Delayed delivery lately.

I’ve had Amazon prime for years now. This past month or so my next day deliveries are now four day deliveries! The ads all say “tomorrow” for delivery. I complained to Amazon on my last order and they refunded me in full ($70) and let me keep the order. However I placed a new order the next day for “tomorrow” delivery but it will also be a three, maybe four day delay. Anybody else experiencing these delays lately?

What the heck!

I saw a TikTok video of a guy using lemon furniture polish to effortlessly shine tires. Spray on and walk away. I grab a can from the house and head out to spray my new TT tires I got last week. I got trigger happy and decided to try it on the front propane cover. It was fading and was starting to turn grey. A few hours later I went out and low and behold it looks brand new. The results blew me away. Yes the tires looked good as well. You kids might have always known this hack for years but in my 56 years I’d never heard of it. Not sure if it’ll be a dust collector but it feels dry to the touch. Not oily at all.

Lets talk bedding.

Our new to us FR Vibe bed came with a high quality short queen mattress. Need bedding ideas. We’re currently using a normal size queen comforter and the oversized is making my OCD work overtime. It just looks horrible and messy being oversized. Looking specifically for yellow to contrast nicely with the grey interior. Amazon has it available in short queen but the width is too wide to please me. Tucking it in along the top where the “nightstands” are would be a pain every morning…..otherwise it spills over onto the nightstands. Thinking of going with a short queen sheet set and using a 60”x90” throw as a comforter. I guess this post is more of a rant but ideas are welcome. What do you use?

Let’s talk ovens.

Anybody successfully using their Furrion oven? It looks real pretty and fancy but my wife says it doesn’t work well at all. With the design everything burns on the bottom and is raw on top. We realize this isn’t a commercial chef Jean Pierre oven. Any tips on successfully baking something? Any way of knowing when it’s up to temp?…..or do we just give it a ten minute head start? Is there a way to get a better overall bake result? Thanks.

Lets talk faucets.

Why do travel trailer faucets have their knobs turning in opposite directions to get the same results? It’s confusing and dumb (as far as I can figure out). Been turning water valves counter clockwise to turn on the water and clockwise to turn it off for 55 years now. But my previous 2011 trailer and my now 2021 trailer has the hot water as normal but the cold water is the opposite of what we always do. Anybody have any idea as to why it’s like this? Both the shower and the vanity are like this.

Upping the Towing

Just sold my old 5000lb camper and bought a 7000lb camper. Will my 2015 Silverado 4x4 5.3 with tow package be ok? 245k klms. I have a Blue Ox load leveling hitch. Truck sets nice and level. Furthest I’ll travel is about an hour from the house. Truck is rated for 9600lbs. Yea yea, cargo and passengers. Anybody out there towing this much weight with a similar rig? Ironically the truck is currently at the dealership getting a rear bearing installed…..it was starting to hum.

Can it be done?

Just got a new (to me) travel trailer and wanting to power up the two 120v TV’s without hacking anything up. We boondock a lot and I didn’t want to run the generator just to watch TV. I like a TV on overnight as a sleep aid. There’s a TV in the sitting area and one in the bedroom. Could this be installed to power up the 120v side by hard wiring this between the batteries (2) and the existing panel. Back feeding would be the issue!?!? …..but is there a switch to prevent that? There are a plethora of power stations available but all are really expensive. Thoughts and prayers are welcomed.

Hot Water Tank Question

Got our 2021 Forest River Vibe yesterday. The previous owners didn’t use the trailer this year. The bung was out of the HWT and it was obviously empty. Plugged the trailer into shore power at my house. This morning I go out and notice the outside of the HWT is warm. Found a switch there that was on. I’m assuming it’s for the electrical side of the HWT. Inside the trailer there’s another switch for the HWT that was off…..I’ll assume it’s the propane side of the HWT. Do you think the element is now frigged? My previous trailer had both switches side by side on the control panel inside the trailer.
