Any low height shelving resources for all my filled canning jars?

Have been looking at multiple online sites for a specific size 3 shelf unit to store all my filled jars under a laundry counter. Max height 25 inches. I have about 150 jars so need much weight.

Uline, Global, Webrestaurant, etc. WHERE CAN I FIND this elusive unit?? haha

Tips and Tricks I learned this year after starting canning again after 30+ years.

Recently retired. No expert here but I did can about 150 jars since August 1. Hubby has a big garden. Now to get some shelves to store them all as he is sick of looking at dining table and chairs stacked. Too bad they cannot go in the garage but will freeze here in Massachusetts. Somethings I learned this year from this sub and a FB group and authorized websites and books. I water bathed and pressure canned in my old (1990) Mirro 12 qt.

Setting up an assembly line is important to me. I work left to right to the stove.

  1. I have an old thick aluminum cookie sheet I use next to the stove to sit the hot jars on while filling. PLUS reduce the mess on the counter.

2, I have an old thick placemat next to the cookie sheet that I sit the hot pan on while filling the jars. PLUS reduce the mess on the counter. Use other placemats for setting jars out of the canner.

  1. Lids and bands in a small pot of very hot water. I know you do not have to boil them anymore but I like my lids hot. Saw a tip it helps to soften the rubber.

  2. Hunt thrift stores. This time of year many yard sales etc. FB marketplace. Maybe even some jars!

  3. Look for another pot for waterbath. WHY?? Today my old Graniteware canner sprung a tiny pinhole size hole in the bottom!! I checked the water temp and it was almost empty! No wonder my socks were wet! Luckily I was just canning jelly today that fit in my pressure canner.

  4. Of course follow tested approved recipes. Read them through more than once. Print them out if you can both for checking off steps/ingredients and for making notes. I started a binder for them all this year. Make sure to write down WHAT you are making and from what source. DO NOT count on memory!! Especially with similar items like Salsa (I made 3 kinds). Label as soon as possible even just writing on top of lid what is in jar. MAKE SURE TO NOTE HOW MUCH THE RECIPE ACTUALLY MADE!! As recipes are all over the place with amount results.

Get a NOTEBOOK! FOR NOTES. Keep a MASTER list of how much produce used as you go along. This helps in planning what to plant next year as well. Example I needed about 25 pounds of red peppers for what all I wanted to make. Had to buy quite a few as we only planted green. Same for hot peppers if you plan on making any salsas.

  1. Some of my canning excursions started with me prepping late afternoon and making the next day. When possible and practical, I used some of my quart jars to mix together the liquid ingredients needed, using my fridge containers for veggies etc. I love rubbermaid takealongs that hold 4 cups as they are flat and stack in fridge. As prepped, Using my printout to check off each ingredient.

  2. BIG one cannot double jam/jelly recipes with pectin. To make double use 2 pots at the same time to make 2 batches.

  3. Look for discounts on canning supplies now. My grocery (Shaws and Stop and SHop) both had some markdown jar prices. My ACE Hardware has been the best price and they have BALL lids on sale for best price.

  4. FREEEEEEE BOOKS!! Archive.org has a couple BALL books for free and you can download them.

WHAT TIPS AND TRICKS DO YOU HAVE?? HAPPY WINTER! Although I plan on canning those recipes using canned store bought tomatos! and other stuff!

Also I got some plastic totes to store all my lids and bands. Also was informed REGULAR size lids are way cheaper than WIDE mouth lids. I use both kinds depending on recipe but good to know.

WARNING! Ball 38 edition *SPICY TOMATO SOUP* recipe

Was wanting a tomato soup recipe to can from all my tomatoes. Had bought the latest book. OK Spicy tomato soup. Sweated over prepping, peeled tomatoes, chopped peppers, celery, onions, carrots. Followed directions to a T.

Got to the *puree* stage, using my Kitchenaid veg strainer. CALLED customer service to make sure all the pulp I was making was NOT to go in the soup. She did give me a trick to save it and make a stock out of it.

So back into the pan, recipe says to add 1 cup BROWN SUGAR. Hmm I think that seems alot. I SHOULD HAVE CALLED AGAIN AND ASKED!! Cause to me the soup is a sweet mess!!!!!!!!!! No spice at all!!!

Can not even taste all the veggies in it. So unless the pressure canning has changed taste! I COULD CRY!!!!! I am going to call tomorrow and confirm there is not a TYPO in the recipe!

Do I really need to get the newest canning book?

Saw posted on an FB group you should get and use the newest Ball canning book Version 38. Is this really necessary? Many say so because of newest/newer standards.

I am using my books from the 1990s and one from the 80s (KERR), and the approved websites.

Started canning again, last marathon in the 90s. As I have made about 80 jars of stuff, I sure hope the *old* ways are still OK!!

Pepper/onion jelly not setting up (2nd batch) HELP! Need direction

Thank you to all the wonderful people answering my questions as I am in my true 1st canning marathon.

My second batch of this jelly recipe is not setting up. I doubled the batch as the first run only made 3 of the 4 supposed jars. I doubled everything.

The pectin thickened when added to onions/spices. BUT when I added all the peppers it did not continue to be as thick. NOW I did add 1.5 cups of yellow pepper I had and wanted to use up, all rest red peppers 4.5 cups. Did yellow pepper have too much water in it?

I cooked it for 12 minutes, then went into jars and processed for the 10 minutes. BUT now as it is cooling on counter it is not thickening like the first batch. Sooooo my questions...

  1. Did doubling the recipe screw it up? I was so happy 1st batch came out so great

  2. I will wait until tomorrow and hope. BUT if not thickened can I freeze it instead? Any chance that would thicken enough?

Provincetown Licensing Board Member Arrested on Multiple Drug Charges (no paywall)

Provincetown Licensing Board Member Arrested on Multiple Drug Charges

Joseph Centrella, 42, a member of the Provincetown Licensing Board, was arrested on July 22, 2026, in a targeted drug investigation that police say has helped curb the town’s drug supply The Provincetown Independent**+1**. Centrella faces cocaine trafficking and five other charges, including:

  • Possession with intent to distribute MDMA and psilocybin mushrooms
  • Possession of LSD, bath salts, and drug paraphernalia
  • Possession of a Class B drug (methamphetamine) CapeCod.com

According to police, the investigation led to the seizure of large quantities of narcotics and over $6,000 in cash The Provincetown Independent**+1**. The Provincetown Police Department released a photo showing seized drugs, law enforcement badges, and the cash The Provincetown Independent.

Centrella was arraigned in Orleans District Court and pleaded not guilty. He was released on $3,500 bail and other conditions, including a drug evaluation The Provincetown Independent**+1**. Police Chief Greg Hennick praised the operation, calling it a significant step in disrupting drug distribution and highlighting the role of the Detective Unit and regional partners The Provincetown Independent**+1**.

The Licensing Board had directed police in May to crack down on local drug trafficking, especially methamphetamine. Since then, the department has made three drug arrests, two of which involved distribution charges, with Centrella’s case being the most recent and notable The Provincetown Independent.

However, discrepancies have emerged: while police reports list both LSD and methamphetamine as Class B substances found in Centrella’s home, only one Class B possession charge (for LSD) appears in his arraignment documents The Provincetown Independent**+1**. His defense attorney, Tom Kokonomi, has denied the allegations and questioned the basis for the prosecution The Provincetown Independent.

The case is being handled in Orleans District Court, and further developments will depend on the prosecution’s ability to reconcile the charges with the evidence presented.

RANT!!! Grocery prices raised for the summertime

This is the first summer I remember that prices on normal everyday items have gone up like since the last week of June FOR NO REASON!! More so than normal. I track prices religiously. Never mind the outrageous prices on items, we on Cape get more screwed. BUT egg prices are down! And good bargains on bagged shredded lettuce!

Anyone used the Fruit/Vegetable Strainer attachment with boiled potatoes?

Hubby has presented me with a million tiny potatoes from the garden. Like too small to peel.

Can I run them cooked through the strainer to remove the skins??

Interesting psychiatrist interview about all the meds

I have no skin in this game. IMO you have to be delusional to do what she did.

Was she taking ALL those drugs at the same time? I admit I have not studied her med schedule. But mental health treatment in this country sucks.

Found this discussion interesting with a psychiatrist named Dr. Josef Witt-Doerring. Speaks to her specifically and in general about treatments available today.
