Suggestions for anywhere in the world in December?

Hi! My fiancé and I are getting married in October and are planning our honeymoon for December, as I have almost the entire month off of grad school. We are in the eastern US, and are open to basically anywhere in the world! Definitely want to get out of the country, though. We are looking for somewhere with plenty to do: we aren't beach people and aren't wanting a tropical, beachy, relaxed honeymoon. Ideally somewhere with a mix of history, local culture, and nature would be perfect. Somewhere we can stay somewhere pretty decent for not too much. We aren't rolling in cash but still are willing to splurge as much as we can to make it a great vacation. We've only been out of the country once together, to Paris with family, so really anywhere else would be great. Weather-wise, we're fine with cold or warm, just if it's cold, I want it to be somewhere that leans into it. Read: Amsterdam in December with snow and Christmas markets is good, but somewhere like Greece that kind of relies on warm, dry weather might not be great. Ideas I've had, that I would love opinions on: Costa Rica, Chiang Mai, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Vienna. Thank you!

What are these plants?

The landscaping guys in our neighborhood pulled these up from our flower bed. We rent a townhouse, so we have an HOA and no yard. We planted wildflowers and zinnias in the mulch next to our house, and I know what most of them are, but not all. Nothing is blooming yet, so I get that some of them look like weeds, but I don’t want them touching anything 😭 Just checking whether they know what they’re doing and pulled up weeds, or if they grabbed some flowers. Thanks!

Grad students or part-time students: Parking solutions?

Hey y'all! I am a new grad student at NC State. I live about 15 min away from campus and only have evening classes. When fall semester starts, I'll be having class every evening, and I'm trying to be economical about parking. So far, I've had no issue fighting over spaces like I thought I might, probably because it's 4pm when I park. But I'm not sure if paying for 1-2 hours of parking every day is the only option? Are permits available for grad students? I really don't want to pay $200/semester and I couldn't find any info about pricing or if they're available for non-residents. What do the rest of y'all do for parking? Maybe it would end up being worth it to bike down lol.

Any archaeology or paleontology games?

Hi! This feels cozy or cozy-adjacent, and you all are good recommenders. I love unearthing trail ruins in Minecraft and digging up artifacts. But I'm really itching for a game that revolves around that! I would love a game with ruins or dig sites where you can unearth treasures or artifacts and even find old sites. I feel like maybe this doesn't exist, but I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised. Otherwise, I guess I need to learn how to code lol. Thanks!

Can I figure out what mods are causing issues?

Hi! I put together a mod pack on Curseforge and I’m having issues with it being very slow to load in and laggy. The weird part is, I played some of “Life in the Village 4” mod pack and just took about half of the mods and it’s running wayyy worse than that mod pack. Is there a compatibility thing or something that I’m missing? If I could at least figure out which ones are being a pain that would be good. I just don’t know why it’s running worse except it must be less streamlined somehow

How to tell if a Blink camera is connected?

Hi all! I am house sitting for someone and they have a few Blink cameras. They aren’t supposed to be recording me while I’m staying over, because that would feel violating when I’m living here for multiple days. Anyway, I don’t think they’re on. I don’t see any lights on any of them. Plus, they’re really obvious, so I doubt they’d be recording me that obviously anyway. But I just want to double check without, idk, walking over to the cameras and grabbing it or something. Thanks! I don’t know model or anything but I’m guessing they probably all have similar methods of indicating.

Scooter for daily transportation

Hey y’all! I’m completely unknowledgeable about scooters, so feel free to tell me I should look elsewhere. I’ve started dog walking as a side gig while in grad school. The problem is that, as is the nature of the job, I’m driving 15-20 min to and from a job that I’m only at for 30 min. On some of my worse days, I’m driving 2 hours for only an hour and a half of work.

All this to say, I want something that will not take as much fuel as my 2012 Nissan Altima. It feels stupid to be spending $10 on gas on a day I only make $24 before tax. I thought about an e-bike, but my city is not very bike friendly and I think the bike would be too slow and I would spend absurd amounts of time on the road for not much work. A motorcycle is more than I want to get into right now, and can be just as fuel inefficient. I think a scooter might be the happy medium. I don’t need to take highways and it’s pretty much all in-city driving. I’d prefer to spend under $2k if possible, but if it’s worth the investment to have a lifelong scooter, I would make it. Just don’t have a lot in the bank at the moment. Thank you in advance!

Trouble with brushes!

Hi y’all! I’m relatively new to oil painting - only been at it off and on for about a year and a half now. I have some brushes that are fine but not great. I’d love some help with suggestions. I’m willing to spend on a brush I’ll love!

The Shuttle Art ones are cheap-ass ones from an old acrylic set so I know they’re garbage. I like the size and shape of them so I’ll replace them all with a good brand.

The princeton ones are decent, but I’m finding neither is pointed enough for detail work. Is that a matter of how I’m caring for them? Or do I need a different shape? They’re both round. Not sure what I should do there.

The other three are fine, and I like them for blocking in paint more than the synthetic feel. I would replace with just a higher quality one at some point.

Also any other shapes I don’t have that you consider essential? Thank you!!

Props to the Bluey team for keeping the child voice actors secret!

….But I don’t know how they manage it! With all the hype I’m honestly shocked no one has, like, stalked the team and tried to uncover it. At least, last I checked, no one had. So yeah, I commend them for letting them have this fun thing that doesn’t have to ruin their childhood

The constant bane of my existence…

The fact that we can only carry 35 blastpaste at a time 😭 I don’t find it often enough in stashes to naturally restock, and end up stopping by almost every hunter I see just to buy some. And yet my chillwater, purgewater, blaze, etc. stays constantly full because I have 200 of them. Like I know blastpaste is more expensive, but I’m loaded. Let me spend like 5k shards on it at once please

($12k) My hand drawn invites!

I drew these entirely on Procreate and then had them printed through Papier. I could have gone with a cheaper printer (I used Canva for our save the dates, and they were perfectly fine), but I liked that I could do the whole suite with them *and* they have pretty envelopes. The whole thing was $500 but I also got some extras! Really fun process that makes them feel more special.

Hot take: I love Utaru armor

I have gone back and forth with my armor in my current run. I like putting her in Nora armor for the lore, and then Tenakth when it makes sense. But my two favorite looks are Carja and Utaru, and they make the least sense. We all know Carja armor is gorgeous. I’m partial to the Wanderer. But when would Aloy ever traipse through Tenakth territory in Carja armor? It’s just too stupid for me to do (yes I know it’s a game 😭). But my favorite might actually be Utaru. I think the colors are wonderful with Aloy’s hair. The Winterweave is amazing. And it’s not as bulky as a lot of the others like Oseram and Tenakth. But god, why are they running around in grass armor. So yeah, I hate the inaccuracy. Aloy would never fight a thunderjaw in a grass dress. But I love the look, which appears to be very unpopular among the armors! Do any of y’all like the Utaru look?

Aloy and Kotallo

I just feel like these two have amazing chemistry. I don’t usually like to push back against canon relationships, and I honestly don’t even know if Aloy likes men, but those two just seem the perfect fit. I don’t understand how that isn’t the canon plot. They’re both tough and stubborn, but care deeply for the people around them. They’re passionate and courageous. Aloy doesn’t see his missing arm as a detriment and just sees Kotallo for who he is. I just adore them and feel like the chemistry is so strong. I want a whole book about them lol

Which tribe would you most want to live among?

Just what the title says. My ranking:

  1. Banuk. Cold, isolated, relatively boring. Just nothing that draws me to it except the painting and art. Just sort of depressing honestly.
  2. Nora. They’re a matriarchal society, which is kinda neat, but they are religious, fearful, and judgmental. No thanks.
  3. Oseram. I can’t stand the aesthetics of their camps, and they thrive on brown. I wouldn’t do well in such a heavy drinking society. But, I would enjoy tinkering and I think it would be an intellectually interesting group to be a part of.
  4. Tenakth. I could never be a warrior, and I don’t like that their entire society revolves around combat. I do love their camaraderie and I admire a lot of the characters among them. I love Kotallo.
  5. Quen. I hate their recreation of American capitalism. The CEO 😭. But I love that they are the only tribe truly searching for knowledge of the Old World and believes knowledge is sacred. All the tribes are “backwards” in some way, but I love that they want to explore the past instead of fearing it
  6. Carja. They have the whole Red Raids past, and I don’t like how religious (read: paranoid) the society is. But their love for beauty is admirable, and Meridian is one of the most advanced societies we see. And Avad is an admirable leader moving them in the right direction.
  7. Utaru. They are connected with the earth and machines, caring for people and embracing death as it comes. I love the natural look of their gear and some of them are quietly badass, mainly Zo obviously. They can be overly complacent, as we see, but I think it would be a relatively peaceful people to live among.

[FOR HIRE] French-English translator, copywriter, or proofreader

Hi all! I'm looking for translating, copywriting, and proofreading gigs for game dialogue. Can be translating from French to English or vice versa, though I am a native English speaker and French is my second language. I would also be available for any copywriting or proofreading work in English, whether translated from another language or not. I majored in French, spent a total of two years abroad in France, and I received a C1 score on the fluency test. I have over a decade of experience with writing and have strong grammar skills, as well. I would love to work with anyone in need of a passionate gamer with language skills to help ensure strong dialogue with coherent, well-worded phrases. Sometimes you need the perspective of a native speaker to get the flow of the sentences right! Feel free to DM me if interested.

I’m unemployed and the happiest I’ve been in many years

I (28F) got fired from my really shitty daycare job a month ago and it’s the best thing that’s happened to me in years (okay I got engaged in November but still). I’m gardening, reading, painting, gaming, living my best retired life. It can’t last forever. I got approved for unemployment and am actively job searching because my fiancé and I need the funds in this economy. But for the moment, I am thriving. This is what life could look like! I could have time and energy for my hobbies! I could have a fucking break! I accrued 3 hours of PTO per MONTH at my job, and we only got federal holidays off. Even some of those were “professional development” days. I’ve been working full time since I graduated college in 2020, the last time I had a fucking break. I had horrible mental health problems then and couldn’t enjoy the break, but six years later I am THRIVING. Why do we do this to ourselves in the U.S.? Why do I have to get fired to have a break? The looming threat of my savings running out and us pinching pennies is stressful, but outside of that I’m happy. Depressing that it took this to get some rest.

Hi! I (28F) have never been into makeup. Like, I would have friends occasionally do my makeup in high school for events. In college, I got a little bit into colored eyeshadow when I went out. But other than that, I’ve never even dabbled. Never worn foundation or concealer, never worn lipstick/stain, etc. But now I’m wanting to try wearing light daily makeup. Where should I start? What kind of skin products would you start with? I like a super light and natural look and would only want lighter coverage. Thanks!

I am a native English speaker with a French degree and level C1 French fluency. I have extensive experience in writing and grammar. I'm not sure of the exact title used in game development, but as an avid gamer, I would love to work with devs to ensure accuracy of their dialogue in English, as it can often be obvious when a game was translated into English by non-native speakers. Would that be a role for which I would be qualified? How would I go about advertising that service, if it was needed (outside of this subreddit)?

My parents are traveling to Greece next week, and they know my love for Greek history and mythology. They don’t, however, know how much I’ve learned from Odyssey. They’ve been amazed at my familiarity with Greek geography 🤣 However, they asked me if I know any phrases and vocab for their trip and I realized the only one that stuck with me is “malaka” so I was able to tell them the many different uses and tenses of that word….. but not much else 😭😭
