why formerly as stated in the following wiktionary definition?

The act of gaining favor, affection, or influence, by gentle or artful means; — formerly used in a good sense, as of friendly influence or interposition.

one of the definitions for insinuation from wiktionary says 'formerly used in a good sense'

can someone give me an example? i can't think of it w/ a positive connotation

when did the definition change?

what would be the correct idiom? 'always comes thru' is all i can think of...
