Somebody snatched my 14 year old IG handle as their username on WhatsApp. How is this possible?

Usernames started rolling out for me today, and I tried to reserve my username, but WhatsApp says it is unavailable.

I’m confused because this is 100% the same username as my connected Instagram account. My Instagram account is verified (if that means anything), and I’ve had the handle since April 2012.

WhatsApp even gives me the option to “Use Instagram username”, but when it takes me to the reserve username screen, it still says: “Username is not available.”

I also ran a few tests. When I type in usernames from other Instagram accounts I follow, most of them show this message:

>“If this is your Instagram username, log into Instagram and add your account to the same Accounts Center as your WhatsApp to claim it.”

But for my username, WhatsApp does not show that message. It only says:

>“Username is not available.”

So it seems like WhatsApp is supposed to reserve Instagram usernames for the matching connected Accounts Center but mine isn’t working.

So my Question: did somebody really just snatch up my username? And if so, how? And how come my friends and other random accounts seem to have their accounts “saved” by whatsapp by saying: “If this is your Instagram username, log into Instagram and add your account to the same Accounts Center as your WhatsApp to claim it" and mine isnt? Or could it be reserved/protected/bugged in WhatsApp’s backend? Is there any way to get this escalated beyond the WhatsApp support AI bot?
