Is "Room to Dream" a worthy book to read for someone who is a filmmaker/artist or is just a biography?

As a creative person what is your view on "Room to Dream"? Is it worth buying?

Can someone here give a clear definition of the difference between Communism in China and Soviet Union communism

My dad grew up in Poland behind the Iron Curtain and was and still is a staunch anticommunist - he took part of the Solidarity movement in Poland in the 80s and worked underground against the Soviet system at the time. My mom on the other hand is from Beijing and her parents were members of the CCP - my grandma was involved in the Cultural Revolution and my mom attended school for kids whose parents were CCP members and my mom does identify herself as a Chinese communism and believes in. It always baffled me how the hell did my anticommunist dad and communist mom got together (they met each other in the US and stayed here and they just celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary).

Both my parents said that Soviet communism and Chinese communism is very different.

Can someone here give a clear definition of the difference between Communism in China and Soviet Union communism

Does anyone here have family members or spouses who are Jewish converts?

As a person who decided to convert to (Conservative) Judaism - I'm 8 months in (I'm a first generation American to a Polish Catholic family - but I have always been drawn to Judaism - it feels like home). My close family members especially my mom and sister are supportive (although truthful there are some who aren't but I cut them off). My fiancée who is Jewish is a tremendous help and supporter (as well as her family) - and I'm just curious does anyone here have family members or spouse who converted to Judaism - and if so has it change your view as a Jewish person?

Do some Reform Jews chose not to circumcise their sons?

I had to delete my original post because I wasn't specific enough:

My fiancée and I attended a dear friend our's baby boy's brit milah today (with Shana Tovah, Shabbat and today's bris - it was quite a religious joyous weekend!) which was a beautiful ceremony and get together - and our friends of the baby boy are Modern Orthodox and they said that some Reform Jews chose not to circumcise their sons at all. Is this common?

I'm currently in the process of converting to Conservative Judaism (I'm 8 months in) and I was born to a Polish catholic family and I am uncut and I would need get cut/have a brit milah after being approved by the Beit Din (and if my fiancée and I are blessed with a baby boy at some point - we would him to get circumcised / have a brit milah).

Once again, is it common for Reform Jewish families to chose not circumcise their sons?

- Shana Tovah my friends!

What does "The Eye of Duck" mean? And what is an example of it in Lynch's work?

I don't really understand the meaning of "The Eye of Duck". From what I understand, it's a scene or a moment that seems irrelevant or not conducive to the overall film or piece BUT it's actually the essence of theme of the film.

I might have gotten this wrong - so please clarify what does "The Eye of the Duck" mean and can you name an example of it in any of David Lynch's work

Converts to Judaism

I am in the process of converting to Judaism (for 8 months now) I was born to a Polish Catholic family - I never had any connection to my faith that I was born in but I was always drawn to Judaism. Since being my partner who is Israeli-American - I thought it's the time to finally 'be at home' as a practicing Jew. Which is fulfilling :)

I'm just curious has anyone here converted to Judaism (or has a partner who has) and what was the experience like?

Converts who converted to Judaism years or decades ago, how is your life as a Jew?

As somebody who in the process of converting - I also think about the future - the future of my life as a practicing Jew. I am engaged as well so I'm thinking about my life as a husband and hopefully a father to Jewish kids. And I'm just curious to those who converted years ago or decade how has your life as a Jew?

Is it what you expected? Has things changed since becoming Jewish?

How are international couples seen in China

My parents will be celebrating their 36th wedding anniversary later this month. My mom is from Beijing and my dad is from Poland. They met in the US in a English-speaking class and they fell in love and got married and had my sister and me.

36 years of marriage is long - especially in the US when people tend to divorce.

I've visited China several times and people (especially older people would stare at me and my sister for being mixed as well as my parents since my mom's Chinese and my dad isn't). I wanna ask here on Reddt - how are international couple seen in China imo.

My parents said they married each other because of their race

My parents will be celebrating their 36th wedding anniversary later this month. My dad is from Poland and my mom is from China - they met in a English-speaking class in the 80s and than got married after they became US citizens - and had me and my sister.

Something I wanted to ask here was that both my parents attended that they married each other because of their race. As I mentioned my dad is from Poland - he was once married to another woman (also Polish) when he young and living in Poland but they divorced. Than when he came to the US he met my mom and fell in love wit her. My dad said he always had a thing for Asian women (especially Chinese women - because he was fascinating in the culture). My dad can even speak Mandarin and he encouraged me and my sister to speak it - but he said Asian women are the most beautiful. My mom grew up very poor in China and when she came here, she was attracted to Caucasians and my dad who has dark blonde hair and green eyes was ideal for her.

It feels weird (and maybe not unusual) that as a mixed person I'm here because of my parents' kink. Nevertheless, neither of my parents were toxic or creepy about it. My dad actually cut his and our lives' out of his family because my paternal Polish white family was apparently super racist towards my mom and when my sister was born. My dad's a loud mouth Polish guy who always defended us. I love both of my parents.

Still, as mixed person idk if I'm over exaggerating my feelings or not. What do you think? Does anyone else have this feeling?

How people nowadays think of mixed marriages and kids?

My cousin and I are both Polish and my cousin married his college sweetheart who is Japanese. They are married and they are expecting their first child together - they live in the US but they are planning to move to Japan (where they both found work).

Me and my fiancée visited Japan only once (with my cousin and his wife - and I hope to visit again soon) - but I notice there wasn't a lot of mixing in Japan compared to people in the US.

Just curious, how people nowadays think of mixed marriages and kids?

dziękuję

How often do you wear your mask?

My cousin and his wife were was visiting me and my fiancée last week. My cousin's wife (who is from Japan) is pregnant and she would wear a face mask every time we'd outside - more as a protection for her and the child's health - which I think is very useful.

I understand and can see that wearing a mask is common in Japan and several other parts in Asia (I'm Polish so I'm not very aware of the custom/daily life) so I'm curious how often do you wear a mask?

How is Israel's air quality for asthmatics in September?

I'll be visiting Israel for the first in September with my fiancée. I have asthma - and my lungs tend to flare up in the spring and autumn. I usually bring my inhaler whenever I travel but perhaps I might need to bring extra meds depending on the air quality in Tel Aviv.

My fiancée (incidentally) is from Tel Aviv and she had asthma as a child and early teens (she said her asthma was at it's worse in the winter) - she grew out of her asthma when she was in the army and it helped her to connect to her breathing and it improving her respiratory health during that time.

My fiancée just bringing my inhaler - but guys how is Israel's air quality for asthmatics in September?

In all seriousness: has anyone's asthma flared up during sex?

Last night my fiancée were getting intimate and later on I was gasping for air to the point where I couldn't take a breath and I had stop and reach for my inhaler. All was fine and she and I had a good laugh afterwards - it was good! But I'm just curious has anyone had a similar experience? Is it common? This is the first time that this happened to me

Asthma genetics & does childhood asthma "go away" for good?

My partner and I were talking about having kids - and one of the things that I was brought up was how genetic is asthma. I have asthma (yesterday was super humid and I needed to use my inhaler) but I got asthma since Covid - I never had it in my life (no one in my family has it) but since getting sick with Covid in 2022 I developed asthma and had issues ever since.

My partner on the other hand had childhood asthma when she was young (her dad has asthma). She said her asthma was severe and that she would be on her nebulizer every winter for an hour or 45 mins. But she said she 'outgrew it' when she was a teen when she did ballet and it helped her connect with her breath, significantly improving her respiratory health - and has never had an asthmatic experience since.

So this is a 2 part question;

how much does asthma play genetically?

does childhood asthma "go away" for good?

What is a Brit Shalom?

My partner and I are attending a brit milah of friend of ours this Friday. We brought this up another acquaintance of ours and she said the child should have a brit shalom instead. I never heard of this (I'm also not Jewish, I am a Polish American non practicing catholic guy) and my partner is Jewish (she was born in Israel but moved to the US at 4) and she never heard of a "brit shalom". Can someone here please explain what this happens.

btw, my partner and I both want children - and even though I'm not Jewish (I'm also uncut) I would insist on our children to be raise in their mother's faith :)
