An idea for ‘steak’ when you don’t want to pay steak prices.

Last night I was making beef stroganoff. My usual for this is a thin sirloin, cooked fast to rare, and then cutting it super thin. I make the rest of the dish and add the steak at the end so it doesn’t get tough. I couldn’t bring myself to spend $16 a fucking pound for top sirloin. There was chuck cut into 3/4” steaks nearby for $6/lb. I brought it home and hit it with the tenderizing side of a meat mallet. I was hitting pretty hard but not enough to really flatten into cube steak. I then season with salt and pepper, pan-seared it per usual, rested, cut a 1/4” test piece. Holy smokes, was super tender and incredibly flavorful. Ended up eating a third of it like a steak before slicing the rest for the stroganoff. Next will be hitting it on the grill to sear it better, keep it rare, and eat it like a steak. Maybe some chimichurri to go atop it.

Just an idea if anyone wants to play around with some cheap cuts. The beef flavor really was great, more prominent than some other traditional steak cuts.

Anyone else’s GSD get more loving/cuddly as they got older?

My guy has always been friendly, but when he was younger he was way more aloof. He didn’t have much interest in laying down on the bed next to me, would come around to take a couple pets then go about his business.

He’s now four and always wants pets, will cuddle up anytime I lay on the bed, and is way more of a shadow than he ever was previously.

I’m not complaining, I quite like it, but I totally expected the opposite.

Great Heart Brewing is fantastic.

Admittedly, I don’t keep up with the beer world as much as I used to but, damn, Great Heart is awesome and I can’t believe I hadn’t tried it sooner. Great food, great German-style beers, and a really nice space. Will definitely be back.

Here it comes! Maine dems could nominate the second coming of Jesus and Collins’ PR team would be putting out stories about how he threw a hammer when he was a carpenter.

Seen some OG builds on here and figured you all would appreciate the 2004 GWOT setups I had.

It’s cool in retrospect, but I absolutely could not wait to shed the 203. Not only does it make it heavier, but I also found easier to shoot without it and I didn’t have to walk around with a dozen grenades strapped to me.

CAB vet plate: cringe or not?

I’m up for renewal. Currently have regular plates. This is a semi-recent addition to the options in MO. Thinking of this personalized with OTCHDR since I do enjoy cheese.

PSA for those buying coffee at Costco on Olive: the coffee grinders are not returning because some bananahead put walnuts in them.

Some people are nuts.

What’s the longest series of cocktails you can make my adding to the main ingredients?

Don’t really know how to word the question. It occurred to be making a boulevardier. Basically like this

  1. Bourbon = neat
  2. Bourbon + Sweet vermouth = Manhattan
  3. Bourbon + SV + Campari = boulevardier
  4. Bourbon + SV + Campari + Cointreau = Van Zo Post
  5. ?

What’s the longest iteration you can think of? Just the main parts, leave out things like bitters and garnish just for simplicity.

Update: all is well, gunsmith paid for new barrel. HUXWRX Flow is a great upgrade.

Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/ar15/s/t8e8nVWorr

Smith didn't even flinch at replacing it once he saw the damage. Took it for a test run today and it's like a whole new machine. Recoil is nonexistent, very little gas backflow, and I don't feel like i'm being punched in the head like when the previous comp was bouncing muzzle energy off the ceiling at the indoor range. I expect it'll be even better once the temps here fall and outdoor shooting isn't miserable.

Had suppressor adapter pin and welded. I believe the pin is visible INSIDE the barrel.

I don’t even know where to start with this. Was hoping it was some cooked on carbon but it did not come off with a brass brush or pick and is in the exact opposite side of the pin location.

Anyone have a recommendation for a dispensary in STL for a light-weight / rookie, specifically places with a lot of low-dose options?

I don't smoke, but I've been having some issues with sleeping and I'm thinking of giving THC/CBD a shot. Looking for a place that has lots of lower concentration vape options, high CBD, etc. and some REAL knowledgeable staff. Vape really only mentioned because I figure it's easier to control and faster vis-à-vis edibles. Preferably closer to Richmond Heights / Dogtown area, but really don't have an issue going wheverer if it better meets the aforementioned.

I have a detached garage that is absolutely infested with brown recluses. I am going to tear it down for a new garage. Would it be a good idea to have pest control in first so the little buggers don’t migrate to the house during demolition?

Garage is 100 years old, always damp to some degree. The walls have to be a mad max style scene of spider cannibalism. I can catch several brown recluses every time I walk in after an absence. I was thinking of having pest control in to treat the wall spaces before tearing it down. I really don’t want a parade of recluses heading towards the house while I’m tearing it down.

Pest control would be free to smash holes in walls and do whatever is necessary to reduce their numbers. Is it even possible? I understand that spiders can only be killed via direct contact.

Am I in the clear if I remove a pin and weld comp 14.5" barrel and replace it with a suppressor-compatible flash hider and pin and weld it back on myself? I can weld and I have a drill press.

It would take me about longer to set-up than it would to put a small weld to secure the pin.

What is a realistic plan to deal with off-leash dogs and, in the meantime, what are you doing to protect yourself and your dogs on walks?

The dog-attack that killed Steve Ewing's dog has put the spotlight on a problem that, in my experience, has become more rampant in the last couple years. I started carrying mace last year and recently added a pocketknife after a friend's dog was mauled by a pitbull a couple weeks ago that would not release even when being kicked and stomped repeatedly. I call the non-emergency line when I encounter off-leash dogs, but realistically, this is almost certainly not going to result in the owner getting cited since the cops have to get there before they leave the area AND catch them with their dogs off-leash. My area at least has signs everywhere saying that off-leash dogs are prohibited and no-shit I've watched someone take their dog’s leash off next to the sign at the park by my house.

I have two dogs that I walk every day without exception. Unless it's excessively hot or cold, I typically walk for two and a half miles or about 45 minutes to an hour with all the stopping to send and read pee-mails. I tried to count the number of run-ins with off-leash dogs I've had and I honestly cannot count them all. I can confidently say the rate of encounters has increased dramatically in the last couple years. Fortunately, I'm pretty good about spotting them from a distance so the number of close-up physical encounters is lower. I can think of six instances in the last year or so where an off-leash dog has spotted us AND come charging over. In addition, my spouse has encountered two off-leash dogs in the past year while running that charged her (without our dogs).

At this point, I've had it. I've been hesitant to deploy mace and fortunately, in my case, haven't encountered an off-leash dog that bit, but I feel like it's only a matter of time. After the fatal attack on Steve's dog, I'm zapping any off-leash dog approaches and gets within range of the gel stream, which is about 12 feet. Only exceptions are the few old dogs I encounter who are barely keeping up with their owners, but I really wish they'd leash their dogs too.

My first welding project complete: a gate to keep the dogs on the deck.

Previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Welding/s/cUvBVH5Y7n

Hinge is just tacked in this picture, will post a complete picture once finished painting. Overall I think it turned out pretty good.

I need to buy stock in flap wheel and grinder disc companies.

Anyone ever go from office to assembly line? What was it like?

Firstly, I do not work for Boeing but live near their facilities in St. Louis.

I am a burnt out federal employee who works in contracting. Shit right now is not great and I’ve been doing it for close to 15 years.

I’ve always loved aviation and am great with my hands. I am completely comfortable solving complex problems, building things, and getting dirty and that’s what I spend most of my free time doing to dull the pain of staring at a screen for 8+ hours a day.

Any of you made the switch? Quite a few openings near me and I’m nearing a level of crazy that I might just make the jump, pay cut be damned.

Beginner update: I got the MIG up and running and now I know why they say to start with stick

MIG is waaaaay easier. Been playing around with square tubing, first with some really thin stuff I grabbed at Lowes and then with thicker 0.085 I got from a metal supplier. First project goal is a gate to keep my German shepherd up on the deck. I enjoy the thinner tubing because it’s a total pain in the ass.
