I was digging through my boxes today and pulled out this Amazing Spider-Man #17 variant. It’s an American Gothic parody that never fails to make me smile.

​There’s something so perfect about Howard the Duck being dropped into this iconic, serious setting. It reminds me a bit of the "trapped in a world he never made" energy Howard has carried for decades. He’s the ultimate outsider—a cynical, sarcastic, and existential duck who just happens to keep finding himself in situations he didn't create and didn't ask for.

​Honestly, that’s a mood. Sometimes, you just have to lean into the absurdity, shrug, and keep moving forward.

Possessing these two beautiful "bookends" for the comic mini-series (The Many Deaths of Laila Starr) had me on ebay searching for the virgin variant of issue #2. I came across a SLABBED BOOK GRADED AT 9.8 of issue #1, in the virgin foil variant. The slab was also INCORRECTLY LABELED as the BLACK DEATH foil variant when it was actually the virgin foil variant for the issue.

Now, although the slab was labled incorrectly, it was priced accurately, according to the census, at $140. The BLACK DEATH FOIL VARIANT carries a premium of up to $400. Now, help me understand; idoesn't having a slab that's incorrectly labeled corrupt the census data and ruin the integrity of the grading system? And if so, wouldn't this be unfair to everyone who really owns the book that's actually listed on the label? ✨️

Since I don't own slabbed books yet, it's my assuption that this type of mistake affects market prices, scarcity, and actual availability of the labeled book. Right? ✨️👀

Meaning well, I reached out to the post creator and informed him of the mistake. He thanked me before removing the slab from ebay shortly after. Glad his integrity was intact. When mistakes like this are made, my understanding is they (CGC) will fix it free of charge. If this were YOUR slab, would you change the label if it was PRICED correctly, but contained the wrong info or would you have pulled your sales post as well? ✨️

New collector here. Been sifting through 24' and 25' peg warmers for the last 6 months. Can't complain though. I found two identical TH's from 2024 and one $TH from 2025. Had to make an emergency dentist run, and sustained an substantial injury along the way 😵😵‍💫, but managed to find these WHEELS a block away from the dentist 🥳. Funny how life works sometimes. Dental assistants patched me up real good🤕.... and waiting on the dentist now. I know nothing about these cars except I picked what I like, and I may have this 57' Chevy in a different colorway. ✨️😜❤️‍🔥

In January of 2009, Marvel dropped the "Obama Variant" to mark the historic inauguration of the 44th President, Barack Obama.* What happened next completely flipped the comic industry on its head. This single issue became the highest-selling individual comic book of the entire 2000s decade. ✨️

It moved over 530,000 copies. It took five years and an industry reset with Amazing Spider-Man #1 in 2014 for another book to finally past its sales record. Star Wars #1 shattered the whole record with over 1,000,000 copies sold in 2015.

Seeing a real-world American milestone capturing the collective imagination so heavily that it outsold EVERY SINGLE fictional superhero on the planet for half a decade is proof to me, that we actually thrive on the hope of real-world heros.

Regardless of political views, history lives in the details, and the fact that this issue went through 5 subsequent printings to meet the demand is one detail that shows Americans saw Obama as being just as American as Spider-Man...and The Simpsons. 🇺🇲

• I also wanted to note that the choice to add a flag for the 3rd printing was an excellent design choice, but I expected that it would have happened in the first, or even second printing.
