Sally S7

It really felt like Sally saved Don’s life in this scene. He was in such a dark place at the beginning of S7, and the rupture with Sally was a source of so much of his pain and shame; seeing himself completely fall from grace in his daughter’s eyes. Sally demanded honesty from him when they were arguing, and even though she was still hurt, she chose to try to understand and forgive him.

This scene reminds me to let my dad know I love him more often. We never know how much it means or how much time we have.

Roger at the commune (S7E4)

Trying to understand his reactions in this episode. At first he seems to be playing good cop to Mona’s bad cop, humoring Margaret, and even enjoying aspects of the lifestyle. Something seems to shift for him when Margaret goes to hook up with one of the guys that night, and by morning he seems to be taking it way more seriously. Is he seeing his own reflection in Margaret’s abandonment of responsibility in chasing pleasure? Is he realizing his daughter is becoming one of the aimless hippie women that float in and out of his bedroom? What do others see in this?

Alex inconsistency

It’s nitpicky but always bothers me that in season 2, Alex knows how interact with Ellis when she’s confused (telling her the physical exam is hospital policy, etc), but when he is on Derek’s clinical trial for an episode, this ease vanishes and Meredith is basically coaching him on how to meet dementia patients in the moment. I actually think Alex would have some instincts around dealing with someone having delusions because of his mom, so the first portrayal of this is more realistic to me upon rewatch.

Anyone else have little (or big) inconsistencies that bug them more than they should??

Does Paul go to California or stay in the Hare Krishnas?

Personally I think he starts his very niche sci fi author career on the West Coast, but curious what others see in his future.

The Flood - Ginsburg

Every rewatch I find a new scene that breaks my heart.

“Now’s the time for a man and a woman need to be together the most! In a catastrophe!”

Spoken to Ginsberg, the product of a man and a woman being together in a catastrophe.

The Letter

If this has been discussed recently, apologies - but I’m wondering if Don’s letter in the NYT saved the company, or if it did more harm than good.

Peggy actually brought in the new business (Topaz) that allowed the company to survive in the short term, and I’m sure they would have ended up cutting staff anyway. In addition, it ended up burning a lot of bridges and losing them potential clients. But I’m not super familiar with this industry so I’m curious about others’ takes.

Blaming Joan for this is crazy (The Other Woman)

Watching people condemn Joan for sleeping with Herb without condemning:

Herb making a business deal conditional upon sleeping with an employee of the ad agency.

Pete attempting to strongarm Joan into accepting this proposition, and then trying to guilt her into helping him “break the bad news” that “we’re going to lose Jaguar” - implying it’s HER fault for not agreeing to sleep with a client.

Pete CALLING A PARTNERS MEETING to discuss the idea, without Joan there, saying she’d do it “if the price was right.” And then everyone else (sans Don) legitimizing the idea by discussing how to finance pimping out someone who they literally couldn’t start SCDP without, settling on an amount that is 4x what she makes in a year. Considering the proposed amount ($50k,) Joan is criminally underpaid considering how much the company depends on her.

Layne playing the nice guy while seizing the opportunity to save the company money (and protect his own embezzling ass) by suggesting Joan hold out for a partnership rather than settle for the dollar amount.

The partners for voting to pimp out one of their most senior and capable staff, as well as not paying Joan what she’s worth to begin with.

Total lunacy.

“Things were always bad throughout history…”

When people push back against not wanting to bring a child into this horrible world and use this line. Like…ok? Like I probably wouldn’t have had kids during the Cold War, the Great Depression etc. either? Maybe continuing to bring kids into the world has only made it worse??

End of The Suitcase

I know this episode has been discussed thoroughly - but I especially love the moment towards the end in Don’s office when he puts his hand on Peggy’s. It’s both a callback to the pilot episode when she puts her hand on his, and a contrast to how he dismissed her when she covered for him after the accident with Bobbi Barrett, when he tried to forget the whole incident. For the first time, we see him NOT pretending that nothing happened; in this gesture, he acknowledges Peggy showing up for him when he was a total mess the night before. He is moving forward with someone else beside him, finally acting as if he’s not alone (as Anna told him.) Just a beautiful ending to a truly wild ride.

Appliances question

This is probably a very basic question, but is it more cost-effective to shop around for your own appliances (dishwasher, stove, etc) or go through your builder? Very new to this process and was wondering if the builder would be able to get a lower cost through their business relationships, or if they’d have their own markup. Curious to hear folks’ experiences. Thanks!

S4E4 opening

Roger and Don having to field an endless conversation with Lee Garner Jr, with multiple other conversations taking place simultaneously, is one of my favorite episode openings. The ridiculousness of the conversation based on Roger’s responses (“Lee…Lee…the jockey smokes the cigarette” discussing ads with athletes) and then finally ending the call by saying there’s a fire downtown - the writing and delivery is just so good.
