First Day as a Job Seeker in Delhi

I woke up at 5:00 a.m. knowing today's a new day of my new life. “I will change my circumstances, be a better version of myself, return to home at least after month after doing something, even if it is a small change", I said to myself while packing. Then I got a call from Ruhaan, my friend who has been working here since last 1.5 years, asking me if I am ready to depart. Due to being nervous and the long journey, I skip breakfast completely even do it was right in front of me. At 6:30 I got the call, "Come outside I am at your door”. I like my parents give me the blessings, pray for me, before I left. My mother was peeping out of the door, as I kept my bag in the car and I was watching her whilst sitting in the car. Shook hands with Affan, and the friend of mine, and with Saadan the co-worker of Ruhaan, before we drove off.

The car accelerated, so did my life. The rain gradually increased as we were leaving the city and I was looking out of the window, nervoused and excited, what Delhi has for me. At Shiva Tourist Dhaba we took a stop, had breakfast, bought water bottles. We arrived Delhi at around 12:30 p.m., Affan and I kept our bags and sat to relax while Ruhaan and Sadaan left for their office. That's when Affan told me about the dark side of Delhi; how I will be fed up by Delhi soon and return to home disappointed as it's my first time in Delhi as a job seeker and how little value does the money that I brought to Delhi for expenses hold, and how frustrated I will become soon because of being alone in the flat all day. I am writing this on June 2nd and I can feel his words now. But, I know I didn't come here to rest, I came here to do something potential. Soon after the conversation, I took a shower and then a nap. I woke up thinking I have been sleeping since so long but checked my phone to find out it’s been few minutes only. Affan went to play cricket with his friend Ammar and and I also alone in the flat locked from outside. I said down to study and root pages until Affan arrived, saying we need to pick Ruhaan and Sadaan from the office and fill up the car’s tank. Soon after the chores we said goodbye to Affan as he left and returned to the city.

Now it was three of us only. Ruhaan and Sadaan slept immediately after returning to the flat and I started using my phone. Soon after that the door knocked and then the voice was heard “I am Ruhaan’s friend, open the door”. I let him in. Both of them talked for few minutes and got up saying “let's go out and eat something”. Rohan asked me to go with them and three of us went to a restaurant and had mutton as our dinner. While having the meal I was noticing the busy life of Delhi, the noises, the feeling of being selfishness among the people. After the dinner he dropped both of us on our flat and left. We both return to our room, Ruhaan turned on the TV and put Dhurandhar, a Bollywood movie, with loud volume while I was using my phone. The lights were turned off, the room went pitch dark and I slept past 2 o‘clock.

That's how my first day in Delhi went as a job seeker.

[Day 1] Writing and Editing: Word Choice and Word Order - University of Michigan

Course ¼: Writing and Editing: Word Choice and Word Order

Introduction: Making You More Persuasive

> "Writing is more like singing, dancing than it is like intelligence. Being smart doesn't mean you can write well. That's an assumption."

Professor Barry shared that he often hears "She is smart. She can't write" but never "She can write. She is not smart". To what it looked like, he was making a point that writing isn't equal to intelligence.

Teachers vs. Readers

In a lecture McEnerny of University of Chicago talked about how teachers of our school are paid to review our writing. While when we leave school we lose that care about and no one is interested in our writing. I think this was discussed so we know we need to attract our own audience and no one will be interested in our work initially.

Farhad Manjoo stated how easily we leave media in between and shared his own experience. How he and his wife watched dozens of movies with more than 60 percent mark and how many books are in his kindle that he couldn't make it to chapter two. Manjoo then says "we're busy, you are busy, and I wish I could complete this, but I am busy, You are busy, We all are busy." At the end I was told to keep the insights of Manjoo and McEnerny in my mind which basically means to produce such a piece of writing that makes the readers stick to it.

Errors and Insights

To be good with words we need to know how bad it felt to be bad with words. About the times when our assignments got rejected, we could not sell our products due to the poor choice of words, we could not deliver our emotions, etc. I was then told about a business article published by Harvard Business Review, headlined "I Will Not Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar". The author said poor writing is unprofessional, distracting, shows that you don't care enough and then you might be someone who doesn't pay attention to the details.

To reduce mistakes is a part of this course and to develop insights. We need to generate and absorb insights from the writers.

Day 6 of Learning Russian

Places

Today’s lesson was about Places, I learnt the vocabulary of different places that are listed below:

 1. Магазин - Shop
 2. Аптека - Pharmacy
 3. Музей - Museum
 4. Театр - Theatre
 5. Университет - University
 6. Школа - School
 7. Офис - Office
 8. Больнца - Hospital
 9. Парк - Park
 10. Отель - Hotel

Note: Nouns ending in ‘’ can be both masculine and feminine. There is no rule to define their gender, so you need to remember it. E.g. отель, Преподаватель, секретарь are masculine while площадь (square) and церковь (church) are feminine.

Here / There

From the second or third day I've been reading the word это that means ‘This is’ and today I was introduced to “Here / There".

ЗДЕСЬ / ТУТ (here) <=> ТАМ (there)

‘Здесь’ and ‘тут’ both mean ‘here’, but ‘тут’ is more colloquial.

Since both these words need some context to understand them, so the next lesson was…

HERE IT IS / OVER THERE

For ‘Here it is’ Вот он is used and for ‘Over there’ Вон он is used.

NOTE!

 • We use the words ‘вот’ and ‘вон’, when showing the direction by gesture.
 • Вот’ is used when the place is just near you, ‘вон’ - when it is a bit far.
 • You choose a pronoun (‘он’, ‘она’, ‘оно’), depending on the gender of the noun.

And with this lesson, I wrapped up my today's journey. See you tomorrow.

Day 5 of Learning Russian

Today's learning started with revising the yesterday's stuff; stuff that didn't settle in my mind yesterday, and I had to keep revising it. Finally I can recall few professions like doctor is called врач, chef is повар, etc. Moreover masculine and feminine professions were introduced like студент is a male student and female student is студентка. Usually -ка is added at the end of the profession to make it feminine but not always like in the case of актёр the feminine is актриса.

---

Pronouns

- Я

- Ты

- Он

- Она

- Оно

- Мы

- Ты

- Оно

- Они

---

Personal Pronouns

Russian possessive pronouns agree with the nouns in gender, number and case. ‘Мой’ is the masculine singular form in the Nominative case. The feminine form is ‘моя’.

 1. Мой папа врач и моя мама тоже врач. (My Father is a doctor and my mother is a doctor too)

 2. Это мой друг. Он зовут фэз и он программист. (This is my friend. His name is Faiz and he's a programmer)

---

Vocabulary

*из From

*но - but

*кстати - by the way

Explain the famous couplet of Ahmad Faraz

I've been trying to understand what this couplet means, and I have no idea even now. The couplet is:

میرے دشمن کا کوئی تیر نہ پہنچا مجھ تک

دیکھنا کہ اب میرا دوست کمان کھینچتا ہے۔

Day 4 of Learning Russian

здраствуйте!

I am back to my goal after a three day trip. Today I didn't learn much but just went through old vocabulary and revised it. I started the new Unit, UNIT 3 "WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSION?” and took the first two lessons. I was introduced to professionals in the first lesson and to the feminine form of professions in the second. Usually -ка at the end of the profession changes the gender from masculine to feminine like 'студент студентка' and 'спортсмен спортсменка' but not always like 'актёр актруса'.

The problem of memorizing words persist and most of the words i learnt have already left my mind by the time I am writing this. I am thinking of installing a widget on my home screen that teaches me the words of the day daily.

Day 3 of Learning Russian

здравствуйте! как дела?

Today I learnt about the gender of nouns and how they differ. The gender of Animate nouns such as 'мама, брат, сестра' refers their physical gender. As for the genders of inanimate objects such as 'house' or 'book', they can be identified with the ending of the noun.

- Masculine nouns end with a consonant, for example: кот, cок, шоколад, etc. (The letter 'й' is considered as a consonant)

- Feminine nouns end with 'а' or 'я', for example: вода

- Neutral nouns end with 'о' or 'е', for example: молоко, еспрессо, etc.

Plural forms have "ы" or "у" at their end, for example 'конфеты’ (confectioneries), вафлу (waffles), etc.

I was introduced to 6 cases of nouns and one of them was explained, which was an 'accusative' case and it is used when placing an order. Accusative case changes the last letter of feminine noun to 'у'.

Then the hardest part, I practiced the dialogues regarding ordering drinks and confectioneries and it took me several hours to completely understand the dialogues. I went through previous lessons to understand better; then failed again, and went back again until I scored better. The unit isn't finished yet, and I still need much practice on vocabulary and pronunciation.

I added Slice savings account to PayPal as it was the main purpose for opening the Slice Account. But I came across a post mentioning not to link PayPal with Slice and they will freeze the account.

Anyone know something about it? Or has connected their accounts with PayPal?

Learning Russian. Want to record the progress

I'm learning Russian from a platform called Gateway 2 Russia. I want to post my daily progress, not for show-off; but for recording and proof too as I love to keep journals. I'm thinking about doing so on Vkontakte, or on LinkedIn as they're more formal unlike doing so on Reddit as it's not made for such.

What should be more casual and formal platform that can benefit me anyhow?

Also, what progress should I write daily?

The Innocent One

I wrote this:

I sit in my cell like a medieval rock,

Then stare at the hands of the broken clock,

Wondering my age when I will be freed

Or I won't, and end up being buried

My surroundings look no less than a zoo,

Everything I heard, turns out to be true

Tiny holes on roof, with walls white,

I sketch on them, the days of my fight

Above my skin, dust is layered

Scorching heat made them paired

When I plan to rest, and lay at night,

I think of freedom, a future bright

I write in my diary before I sleep

Quietly in my cell, I do weep

Someone often gives up on their life

Through toxins, or a slit with knife

I pray for good days, with teary eyes

For tyranny to end, so I might rise
