Project: the Dulle Griet/ Mad Meg. Does anybody know a good pattern for a 1560's Netherlandish kirtle? As seen in these paintings by Pieter Breughel the Elder.
Kwak in Artis
Deze kwak is niet van de dierentuin, maar die komen daar elk jaar terug om te broeden. Super leuke vogel, blij hem gezien te hebben :)
Meer klank en licht dan het mainstage van Tomorrowland hier vanacht om een uur of twee...
imgur.comBought an epic .... load of antique French linnen bedsheets. Now what to do with them?
I found a listing on Vinted for 6 of these old sheets. It's several kilos of material, varying a bit in quality; the material is heavier and coarser than modern sheets, but very soft.
The oldest (I think) has a seam down the middle and embroidered monograms, but also has lots of small yellow spots.
I'm considering dyeing this one blue or grey or black and making an upper garment out of it. And make another, cleaner one into a chemise.
There are two that I think are actually métis, which is part linen and part cotton. So can't use those.
For the period, I have two options: I live near an annual festival that sets itself in Flanders in 1477. But most visitors seem to dress a bit later, I may get away with something Breughellian.
Or as a native Dutch person, I would really like to dress as a common Dutchwoman from the second half of the 17th century. A proper Jan Steen character! Or maybe a Vermeer one.
Now of course, these paintings show a lot of wool. But as the festivals I plan on visiting are in the hot season, I was wondering to what degree a person can get away with upper dress made from linen? Will I be hung, drawn and quartered by the Flemish for substituting linnen for wool?
Can you experts please help me narrow it down a little into a feasable project? Thank you!
Trying indigo on linen for the first time! Should I get sodium hydrosulfite or fructose as a reducing agent?
I'm seeing some tutorials use Sodium Hydrosulfite and soda ash for jacquard pre-reduced indigo, while others recommend the 1-2-3 method with calcium hydroxide and fructose.
Which one is the best for reliable results and ease of use?
bruzz.beWhy do Dylon dyes suck so bad these days
I remember when their little tins were so awesome. Super awkward packaging, the stuff would get everywhere but cheap and so much color. Just add a lot of salt.
The products they have now just don't seem to cling to the fabric. The black and blue ones for washing machine use in the soluble packaging are the worst- they seem intended only the fresh up the color of an already dyed garment. Start with a white cotton fabric, and end up with a dreary purple. Did they change the mordant or something?
It will stick to everything except fabric so the washing machine will never be clean again. How is this even allowed?
Sadly they still have most of the European market. Does anyone know about something better? I've got a lot of linnen to dye in dark colors... Thanks!
Yatagarusu the devine guiding crow. Mask by me, kimono from an Osaka thrift store.
Photos by Frank Streng. I wore this costume at a fantasy fair in the Netherlands, Runeheim last week. Original character based on Japanese mythology.
This male kimono outfit is actually very practical and wearable. The mask slightly less so, it was very hot- but at least I could see because it has prescription glasses built into it!
The mask was made from a big old leather jacket from the thriftstore, with mostly materials from the local discount store, Action.
Yatagarasu, the guiding crow god. Mask by me, kimono from a thrift store in Osaka.
Photography by Frank Streng. Worn at a fantasy fair in the Netherlands. The kimono outfit was actually very comfortable, though I think I will not wear the hakama again as it didn't add much and is not in great condition.
The mask was not too bad, just very warm!
Went to a fantasy fair as Yatagarasu the crow kami in an outfit I thrifted in Osaka and a mask I made myself.
Public prosecutor dismisses investigation into watch thieves at Tomorrowland: Flemish mayor was also a victim (GVA.be)
The investigation into the gang of thieves who violently robbed visitors of Tomorrowland of luxury watches last summer has been closed without any results. No suspects could be identified. One of the victims was Dries Deferm, mayor of the Limburg municipality of Nieuwerkerken.
“I was unfortunately the victim of senseless violence on Sunday evening,” Deferm wrote on Facebook last summer, after a visit to Tomorrowland. "On the way back, on foot, two friends and I were attacked and robbed for no reason. I was repeatedly beaten, became unconscious and had to go to the hospital for treatment. There I was sewn in several places. It was also determined that a vertebra in my neck was cracked."
Expensive Rolexes
In addition to the mayor of Nieuwerkerken, at least seven other festival goers were violently robbed. The perpetrators targeted luxury watches. They targeted visitors with expensive brands such as Rolex, Tudor and Hublot on their wrist. The gang even threatened several victims with a knife and pepper spray. The facts took place outside the festival site, on the way back to the car parks and the buses.
Northern French gang?
In February of this year, Deferm already said that it was a gang from probably Northern France, but that the perpetrators had never been found. "We were there by taxi, with a group of friends. We had had a few drinks and were therefore probably easy prey. I was the last to walk and was attacked from behind," Deferm said at the time.
He ended up only staying home for five days after the incident. "I didn't want to show myself in public with my damaged face. Then I just went back to work. I tried to quickly turn the switch. And if I can, I will go to Tomorrowland again this year."
Not sure if a post like this is allowed, but any of you have ever had this happen before? I guess next time I should keep the little lid on top closed
Update:
Just a little more information for the people who are curious. Obviously I’m not touching the newly created mansion, and letting the new owner do its thing hahah.
Some were also wondering where this was taken, I live in the Netherlands. I think it’s a “blue tit” (but definitely correct me if I’m wrong).
Update 2:
I have been corrected, it’s a great tit.
