I have a friend who gave the NET and scored well, but his parents are refusing to pay the university fees even though they can afford it. Their mindset is basically “degree ka fayda nahi”wgahira wgahira

He genuinely wants to pursue higher education, but instead he’s being pushed toward a low-level government job like an army clerk position. He has tried convincing them many times, explaining his goals and interests, but nothing changes.

What should someone do in this situation?

Should he give up on the degree and do the job, or keep trying for university somehow? Would appreciate honest advice from people who have faced something similar.

I have personally seen friends who wanted to do a degree but simply couldn’t afford it. Yes, there are some cheaper universities, but many people feel they are not good enough or not worth spending years on. Because of this, many young people prefer doing jobs like call centers or preparing for sarkari nokri instead of pursuing higher education.

According to the Constitution, education is the responsibility of the state. Countries like Finland provide quality education for everyone, and even the UAE is investing heavily in modern education and opportunities for youth. Meanwhile, according to Dawn citing the Pakistan Economic Survey 2024-25, Pakistan spent only around 0.8% of its GDP on education, which is extremely low compared to many other countries.

So where is Pakistan lacking?

Is it the government’s fault, the education system, the economy, or society itself?

One thing I don’t understand is: if Pakistan is truly independent, why can’t we freely buy petrol or gas from Iran without worrying about US permission or sanctions?

People say Iranian petrol entering through border areas is still cheaper than official Pakistani petrol. In some areas of Balochistan, Iranian petrol has reportedly been sold around Rs210–280 per litre, while official petrol prices in Pakistan have gone above Rs320 per litre in recent months.

If we officially bought fuel directly from Iran, wouldn’t petrol become much cheaper for ordinary Pakistanis?

Iran is our neighbor, and cheaper energy could help Pakistan’s economy and reduce inflation. Yet every time projects like the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline are discussed, there’s pressure from the US and fear of sanctions.

So the question is: Are we actually independent in decision-making, or are we still dependent on global powers for major economic choices?

What do you think — is this just international politics, or proof that our system is not fully sovereign?
