Is it safe to touch my eyes after playing guitar, even if I’ve washed my hands?

After I play my electric guitar, my fingertips smell like metal from the strings even after washing my hands (I can still notice a slight metallic smell on my fingertips).
I asked Google AI about this, and it said that Ernie Ball 9s are made from non-toxic materials, so there shouldn’t be any problem. It also said that the metallic smell I notice after washing is likely just a “ghost smell”.
Even so, I’m still a bit concerned. If I wash my face or accidentally touch my eyes with those fingertips after washing my hands, is there any real risk of irritation or contamination? Or is Google AI’s explanation generally accurate?
I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who knows about guitar strings, metal residues, or eye safety.

Sudden spike in sound hit my right ear

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some insight into a sudden, very loud spike I experienced while recording in Logic Pro.
I was using my Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones, and after I disconnected my mic and reconnected my headphones directly to the Mac’s headphone jack, I opened my project. Immediately, on one of the vocal tracks I recorded, which was fully panned right, there was a massive ringing sound that hit my right ear. I took them off immediately—within a second or two—but does anyone have an idea of how many decibels this might have reached (or rather What is the maximum decibels these headphones can reach)? And do you think that this short exposure could have caused any permanent hearing loss?
Any advice or similar experiences would be hugely appreciated

Can somebody please tell me how to fix this?

Maintaining Advanced Metal Guitar Skills with Less Practice Time

If I’ve been playing guitar more than 2 hours a day for the past 2 years (for a few months more than 3 hours a day) but now I drop to just one hour a day, will I be able to maintain my exact same skills (shredding lead guitar and rythm guitar etc.)?
I play death metal, thrash, technical death metal and other types of metal.
Will I become less good?

Thanks!

Advice on Recording Death Metal Vocals: Verse-by-Verse is legit?

Hey everyone, I’m about to start recording my death metal vocals (false cord) for an album, but I’m a bit unsure if my approach is legit. I’m planning to record each verse separately, so I’ll sing one verse, stop, then record the next (if the verse is too long, I will stop in different parts of the verse) I won’t do it all in one go. Also, do you think it’s okay if I don’t double track the entire vocals, but just use double tracking on the chorus? Would that still work, or do you recommend something else?

Thanks!

Crackling sound when recording with a mic in my bedroom

Hey everyone, I was recording vocals with an SM58 into a Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen interface, but I kept getting a crackling sound. The crackle stopped when I unplugged it from my computer and moved it from my bedroom to my living room. Has anyone else had crackling issues that changed with location or a move? Any advice on what might be causing it to avoid future problems?

Ps: Is the “shhhh” sound normal?

How long before recording death metal false cord vocals should I avoid dairy?

I’m recording vocals for a death metal album and will be doing mostly false cord screams/growls.
If I’m recording tomorrow, is it fine to have dairy today? How many hours before a vocal session do you personally stop consuming dairy, if at all?
Looking for experiences specifically from extreme metal vocalists.

Thank you!

Question about inputs

Hey everyone,
Quick question about the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen.
If I plug an XLR mic into Input 2, I’ll then adjust the gain using the Input 2 gain (control) knob specifically? Or does it also affect gain Input 1?
I am asking, because I want to set the gain levels differently for input 1 (guitar with TRS cable) and input 2 (microphone with xlr cable).
Common sense would be input 1 with gain knob 1 & input 2 with gain knob 2, but I don’t know. I am not gonna use them at the same time; the idea is to have the levels set one time, and not have to change them every time I use the scarlett.

Thanks in advance

Distance between pop filter and sm58?

I’m recording a death metal album with false chord screams using a Shure SM58 (which already has a built-in pop filter).
For those who record extreme metal vocals with an SM58, what distance do you recommend between the pop filter and the microphone? Also, how far is your mouth from the pop filter?

Internal pop filter and external?

Hey everyone, I have an SM58 to record death metal vocals (for an album), especially using false-chord screaming. The mic has a built-in pop filter—do you still recommend using a separate (“external”) pop filter or will the built-in one be enough?

Thank you in advance!

Recording vocals tips

I’m recording death metal vocals using a false chord technique and I’m unsure about the best tracking approach.

For the main vocals throughout the song, should I record two separate takes (which would be sung in the same way) and keep them both centered? Then for choruses or bigger sections, record additional takes and pan those hard left/right for extra width?

Or is it perfectly normal to record the lead vocal only once and keep it centered, then use doubles only for emphasis in certain parts?

I’m trying to get a professional sounding death metal sound so that the vocals don’t loose power against the rest of the instruments. What do most of you do when recording and mixing harsh vocals?

Thank you in advance!

White football shirts getting underarm stains – antiperspirant or something else?

I’ve started noticing these light gray/yellowish stains on the underarm area of my white shirts (cotton and spandex). They weren’t happening before, but over the last months they’ve started appearing on multiple shirts.
I use Nivea Men Black & White Invisible Active antiperspirant spray. I’m the only person in my family who uses deodorant/antiperspirant, and I’m also the only one having this issue.

The stains don’t seem to come out with a normal wash. Any tips for removing the stains and preventing them in the future?

Photos attached.

Feedback on fry screams

Hi everyone,

I posted this before but didn't get many responses, so I'm trying again. I'm about to start recording the vocals for my death metal album. l've already done the guitars, and now I'm moving on to the fry screams. I have some vocal recordings from my first demo with a guitar and l'd love some feedback.

Thank you in advance!

Fry-Scream safety

Hi everyone,

I’m brand new to death metal vocals and I’m currently recording a 8-song album. I’m at the stage where I’m gonna start recording my vocals (I only sing with fry screams) and I have about one month to do it. I want to make sure I don’t harm my throat. How many hours per day would be safe to fry scream, and what’s a good daily plan so I don’t hurt myself?

Thanks in advance!

Guitars panned center, but only heard either on the left or right

I’ve bounced my tracks as stems on Logic Pro and something weird is happening.
I have a rhythm guitar part that was double-tracked. Originally, one guitar was panned 100% left and the other was panned 100% right.
After exporting the stems, both guitar stem tracks appear to be panned center. However, when I listen to them panned center, the sound just comes on the left (on the guitar that was fully panned left before) or fully on the right (in the case of the guitar that was fully panned right).
Btw, when I fully pan the guitar that was fully to the left, fully to the left, the sound doesn’t sem to change (and the same thing on right).
When I take the stem that was originally left and pan it fully to the right, the sound fully disappears. The same thing happens in reverse with the stem that was originally right.
What could be causing this? Do I need to fix this? What is the fix?

On which bar should the track begin?

I’m organizing a death metal track in Logic Pro and want to set up the project properly before sending it to a bass player and a Drummer (whom don’t use Logic).

I’ve already recorded the guitars. Next, I want to record all vocals/screams in one go, then send the project to a bass player and a drummer who use different DAWs. After that, everything will go to a producer/mixing engineer.

My question is about project organization and timeline placement:

At which bar should the song actually start? Bar 1? Bar 2? Bar 3? Later?

What’s the best practice when preparing a project that will be passed between multiple musicians and eventually a mixing engineer?

Thanks!

Will this pop filter work with my microphone stand?

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a pop filter and a microphone stand, but I’m not sure if they’re compatible.

I’ve attached photos of both. Does this pop filter mount correctly on this type of stand, or am I missing something?

If they aren’t compatible, what type of pop filter would you recommend for this stand?

Thanks in advance for any advice!
