Who exactly are pride events for?
On the surface level this seems like a dumb question with an obvious answer, LGBT people. But when you not only hear of the conflicting reports on people's experience on pride events but also people's beliefs on the purpose of pride events then what is believed to be the targeted demographics may be a lot more specific than previously believed.
I think it's widely known the conflicting experiences people had at pride events so I'm not gonna go into that but rather what people believe the purpose of pride events especially in relation to such experiences. One side essentially believes it's purpose is to show that LGBT people were no different than everyone else and to combat stigma and prejudices and to rally for civil rights and integration into societies institutions. But the other side has a different view one that had no interest in changing anyone's mind in fact it embraced stereotypes and prejudices and while also combating prosecution and discrimination seemed to operate more out of spite rather than an interest for any kind of integration and it's rebellion centered around hypersexuality with it being seen as the valid way of such rebellion although I should point out both versions are inherently rebellious just in different ways.
Now some people may merely just defend the hypersexuality in pride events I myself and not against adult events as long as minors are kept out of such events and family friendly events are actually family friendly I don't care. But then there those who think pride events should universally be centered around urban libertine cultures and any deviation even if it is to reach to more LGBT people themselves such as family friendly events as homophobic appeasement for straights and conservatives. Now I wouldn't really care so much about pride merely being for certain types of LGBT people centered around Libertines if it weren't how dominant and monopolistic pride as culture and form of activism is something I wish was more acknowledged.
No doubt LGBT activism is still needed but if these people's viewpoint's are indeed the correct viewpoint than there are problems because we have a form of activism that according to some of it's proponents is only meant for certain kinds of LGBT people rather than LGBT people generally as the globally dominant form of activism you don't think there's a problem here? considering the diverse needs, desires even within relation to the demographic(s) they're part of? Some may point to how people people did it in the past as justification but what about the needs of today? shouldn't lgbt activism be about doing what works best rather than just doing what the people of the past did? Not saying we can't acknowledge it but shouldn't we also work around today as well? So that's why I ask as someone bi myself who exactly are pride events for? Pride parades personally aren't my thing but I can't help shake the feeling that even if I wanted to go I may not be the targeted demographic anyway.
