Looking to automate our air assist.

Looking to automate our air assist.

ULS sells a controller that automatically turns the air on and off, but it's $8,000. I think this setup will detect power flow to the laser unit itself, and open the air line solenoid.

"Why don't you just manually turn the air on and off? It's not hard."
We have 4 machines and we're a university lab for student use. We barely have them trained to turn the exhaust on.

Would this setup do it?

What's your diagnosis for the problem of fat cuts?

What feels like a year ago, I noticed one of our lasers was producing burned valleys.  I went through a lot of calibration and adjustments to see what was going on but ran out of time before the students came back and needed to use it.

I recall a suggestion of swapping out laser units, so that’s what I did…

Notes on the Image, top down:
1 – Tight Cut on Machine A.  No issues with this machine.  (Control Test)

2 – Tight Cut on Machine B WITH the lens, mirrors, and laser unit from Machine A

3 – Cut with burnt valleys.  (Control Test)

4 – Machine A with lens, mirrors, and laser unit from Machine B.  No cut, and produced 2 separate etches.  A fine line and a fat line.

Laser Unit A is dated Nov. 2024
Laser Unit B is dated Sep. 2023

Yes, I've checked that nothing is obstructing the path of the laser.

EDIT: In putting everything back together, I realized that swapping the mirrors and lenses is probably what created the double lines in the bottom test.

How do I get rid of doubled up lines?

We use Illustrator to send files to a laser for cutting and etching. If there are multiple lines overlapping, the laser will see them all and cut them again... and again.

I sometimes I Group everything together, use Outline Pathfinder, then replace my Stroke Color and Line Weight, and then Ungroup. That creates dozens of individual parts, but it will only have 1 line.

When I use anything resembling Grid creation via Path -> Split Into Grid or Repeat -> Grid, once Expanded (etc) I can get dozens of squares, but Outline Pathfinder won't fully break and merge pieces.

In the image, if you can see, the areas of darker lines are where there are multiple lines on top of each other. On the right is a grid that I created with a 1" square that I Alt-copied. Outline Pathfinder worked on it. But on the left was a grid that was created via Repeat Grid. It was expanded, but after Outline, I got a mess of different pieces.

God Damned White Trash... and Arkansas

This happened a while back at this point, but it came up on my Spotify.

Al is a madlad, as they say.

Ministry came to Northwest Arkansas (with Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper) and performed God Damned White Trash, and the video visuals he used on stage were literally just a collage of videos from the January 6th Insurrection. You wouldn't think much of it, but the video actively featured Richard Barnett. He was the guy pictured in Nancy Pelosi's chair. Ole Richard here is from Gravette, AR, which is less than 30 minutes away from where they were performing.

There were probably people in the crowd who knew him personally.

I still giggle when I think about it.

My party left off just before the Festival. They did some shopping and scouted out the manor as this is where the Tome was going to be. Based on windows and chimneys and knowing it was in the attic, they devised a Heist! They were excited about the heist. I THOUGHT they left off at looking to make an appearance at the festival to establish an alibi. Van Richten offered up his tiger to create a distraction and chaos for them to rob the manor. This was when I was going to run a version of Tyger, Tyger, basically.

Well, 2 months go by between sessions and I apparently misunderstood where they left off. They weren't going to go to the festival as they had already been seen publicly and were instead going to enter the join from the south gate to get access to the manor without having to through down.

I had a lot of narrative written up related to the Festival. Leaning into the bleakness and horror, so I was really disappointed that it all got pushed aside. So be it. That's a part of being a DM. Instead, we dove into the Heist. And the damn thing went off without a hitch. Amazing rolls all around. Invisibility and Spider Climb. Yeesh. Great! They have the Tome.

They ended the session camping outside of town.

Outside the walls of the town.

In the wilderness.

For all of my disappointment with not being able to run the Festival, they set me up to run a Wilderness Long Rest Interruption.

I'm really not sure they realized what they've done. They've played everything so careful so far.
