At this point, we uninstall and reinstall it before even searching anything. We know it's gonna freeze the moment we start a movie, so we try and purge the cache before we even start.
I know its completely unoptimized for, well, being used and I know Amazon is better, but we tried to deinvest from Amazon and directly support... But... Well...
It's summer time, so que the odoroous ants in our kitchen. I've always use Terro stations because it's readily available everywhere. Once a station even gets a little congested, I swap out for a new one. I thought I had things under control, because there werent any for a day or two... but a few showed up. I hopped on Amazon and bought some Advion stations.
And now it's worse than ever. And look, I know it's only been 3-4 days since i set it out... but the issue is that I figured I'd leave the Terro out as a lure and that's what they're noticibly going after. I see very little movement with the Advion.
I know it came take up to 2 weeks to see a "colony collapse," so tell me I'm doing this right?
I threw out the Terro and just left the Advion. Hopefully the ants switch more fully.
Is it likely that I'm seeing activity with the Terro because it's killing to quickly? Yeah, it's covered up... but it's dead ants. The Advion only has 5 or so ants in it because they're getting the chance to actually take it back?
...I think I need to buy more Advion...
I made this end grain walnut board for my dad last Christmas. It’s holding up and I’m pretty happy with it. However, I can feel the seams. The pieces themselves feel smooth enough (for a cutting board), but it’s the edges that feel proud.
I feel like it was that way when I made it, and probably sanded up to 300 and I definitely would have wet sanded to pop grain. ((All unnecessary for a cutting board, I know… but it feels so satisfying!))
Just curious if anyone had thoughts or recommendations
Party is leaving Vallaki for Richten's Tower. It's been 2 months since we've played as a full group because of summer vacations.
I'm thinking about playing a non story session. A little one shot to ease back into things. Roll some dice. Pondering the idea of a never ending road. During one session at a table, the party rolls through 2-3 long rests because just... nothing happens.
"Nothing happens" is a misnomer as I'm thinking maybe have the same encounter in the same space each day.
If the players investigate their surroundings, they might get hints as to what's going on... or even what's happening with this stretch of road.
Maybe Strahd is screwing with them. Maybe it's a curse. Maybe it's the druids.
I'm coming to you, the community, asking if this would feel needlessly repititive to the point of being boring.
The timeloop idea is a horror concept, but I'm not sure I wanna go full time loop.
Feels like a dumb question considering how ubiquitous these things are. However there are differences between a power strip and a surge protector. Albeit often minimal.
The reason I’m asking is because recently we had lightning strike a tree in my back yard and my Apple TV and Xbox fried. Both were plugged into what I thought was a protector. But a standard one you can get at any box store.
*Why I’m even asking: extra safety and security.
See… there was a flash and a boom, but there was no flicker of power. All of my entertainment system was plugged into this protector. TV, Receiver, Sub, AppleTV, Xbox, Modem, and a few lower voltage odds and ends.
The ONLY things that fried were the AppleTV and the Xbox.
Both of these items had wired connections to the modem.
The cable line comes to the house right by the tree.
But the modem was ok and the service tech insisted that the Cat(#whatever) cables were too small to transfer a load like that to the devices.
Context certainly says it was the Ethernet cables because those were the only things affected. But why not the modem?
The Xbox was fixed by replacing the power supply unit. That seems wrong end of a surge via the Ethernet.
To top this all off, the arborist said it looked like frost damage “which doesn’t make any sense.” His words.
I don’t know what to believe anymore about what happened. I’m just glad the tree is still alive.
But after throwing away a $150 AppleTV that wasn’t serviceable (that I only ever used to watch Ted Lasso) and $260 to repair the Xbox, I’m willing to spend money and buy a more proper setup.

A recent lightning strike fried our Xbox. It's off for repair, but I'm not hopeful. I was just reminded of the restructuring going on at Xbox and it occured to me... is the Xbox worth replacing?
It's been a hard week because we use it every day, but mostly for YouTube and other streaming apps. Which I can do on almost everything we get.
Is it true that with how the markets have gone and the structuring that the Xbox is dead? I suppose there's a handful of digital games I'd have to rebuy... which is frustrating in of itself, but what will I miss out on?

I feel very confident that it's not dirty. I've q-tipped. Compressed air. Spun the Lidar. Factory reset and rebooted and reconnected. Even went through the whole other reddit post of taking the robot apart because maybe the rubber band had broken. It was not, and it spins freely.
It just insists it's dirty.
Does anyone have anymore tips I can try?
In the end, I'm not looking to shower with it. I'm looking to introduce a lot of air into an incoming flow of water. My gut says that these classics would definitely do the job. Just curious if there's another that will do better.
I'm building a light setup for camping (with 10,000 people) that has high value. It absolutely is at risk of walking away (though, I still plan on implementing various deterennts and prevention matters, but "locks only keep honest people honest"). I can easily open up the case and stuff an AirTag into it. I know it has a range of 100 feet, and the entirety of campsite is, let's just say 1 mile square.
If it's nearby, I assume i can ping it, but if it gets stolen and wanders farther away, can I wander around and if I get close to it, will it light up?
We have laser cutters in our maker space, and they need air assist to keep lenses clean and create cleaner cuts. As is, it's just manually turned on and off. I'm trying to automate it so that it turns on when the laser activate (not machine turns on).
The working idea is that the laser cartridge will pull more power when it's activated, and the Current Sensing Switch will catch that and activate a Solenoid. *
The Current Sensor is on the hot wire going to the laser cartridge itself inside the machine.
This set up works in that when I dial the Sensor Switch up and down, it open and closes the Solenoid.
What isn't working is reliably picking up a signal from the laser.
With the machine on and the laser off, the Solenoid gets a signal to stay closed. ((and again, I can dial up the sensitivity to open it)) When I press Play on the machine and the laser activates, the red and green lights flicker back and forth and only occaisonally do clear messages get sent to the Solenoid.
So it's not working in application.
Thoughts on improvements to this design?
* - When designing this, it didnt occur to me that a laser cutter isn't a continuous beam. It's pulsed. I didn't think of it because it pulses so fast and so often, that I assumed it would almost read like a continuous beam.
Notes:
-In a perfect world, I could just read the exact signal from the software that says "TURN ON TURN OFF," but this wiring setup is already pretty close to being over my head. Dealing with code and a arduino is another pay grade.

I’ve got a laser cutter so I’m testing iterations of a flat pack bench before full scale build. I’m pretty happy with this version but I’m being told that I should angle the legs out instead of having them square. This would direct the downward pressure in a way that the angled legs would just pull into themselves. As it is, there is some side to side wiggle (that could be resolved with tighter fittings, but that’s a “in a perfect world” scenario), but will that wiggle cause any detriment to the structure or just a slight moment of “WHOA” when you sit down?
EDIT: added another picture down in the comments. The original design didn't have that stretcher under the seat. After looking at crash pad couches, I'm going to extend that stretcher almost all the way to the ground.
When I get here in the morning, at least 1 of our 4 machines will have a blue screen with a Shut Down or Advanced Options that I believe to also be labled Automatic Repair Couldn't Repair Your PC.
We can generally mitigate this for a day by running automatic update as soon as we get here, but there's no guarantee that will work. When there's no one here, there's no problem, but it can happen during a job. These computers run laser engravers and if the computer restarts, the laser turns off.
Per IT, we can't turn off automatic updates for security reasons.
I was curious if there was an actual fix instead of just work around.

This feels like a dumb question. I'm looking to make a slat bench. Assuming all measurements are equal. 1 slat = 3'x1"x2" Would solid wood or laminated have less flex and more strength?
My gut says:
Solid Wood Good! Strong!
But it also says:
Even if the pieces are the same size and material, the lower piece will push back against the downward flex of the upper piece, creating a stronger slat.
I feel like I started noticing this with the Windows 11 changeover, but whenever I'm changing my Stroke and Fill colors in the Properties window, the other will change. Generally to solid white or black. Is there a default setting somewhere I can change?

ULS sells a controller that automatically turns the air on and off, but it's $8,000. I think this setup will detect power flow to the laser unit itself, and open the air line solenoid.
"Why don't you just manually turn the air on and off? It's not hard."
We have 4 machines and we're a university lab for student use. We barely have them trained to turn the exhaust on.
Would this setup do it?
What feels like a year ago, I noticed one of our lasers was producing burned valleys. I went through a lot of calibration and adjustments to see what was going on but ran out of time before the students came back and needed to use it.
I recall a suggestion of swapping out laser units, so that’s what I did…

3 – Cut with burnt valleys. (Control Test)

Yes, I've checked that nothing is obstructing the path of the laser.
EDIT: In putting everything back together, I realized that swapping the mirrors and lenses is probably what created the double lines in the bottom test.
We use Illustrator to send files to a laser for cutting and etching. If there are multiple lines overlapping, the laser will see them all and cut them again... and again.
I sometimes I Group everything together, use Outline Pathfinder, then replace my Stroke Color and Line Weight, and then Ungroup. That creates dozens of individual parts, but it will only have 1 line.
When I use anything resembling Grid creation via Path -> Split Into Grid or Repeat -> Grid, once Expanded (etc) I can get dozens of squares, but Outline Pathfinder won't fully break and merge pieces.
In the image, if you can see, the areas of darker lines are where there are multiple lines on top of each other. On the right is a grid that I created with a 1" square that I Alt-copied. Outline Pathfinder worked on it. But on the left was a grid that was created via Repeat Grid. It was expanded, but after Outline, I got a mess of different pieces.
