Question for classic Doom fans.

Just a super quick question for all the folks who occasionally replay classic Doom. Do you play with or without the infinitely tall actors? Do you play with totally default settings or do you take advantage of source port engine alterations?

I absolutely LOVE old bulky 4:3 full HUDs.

Look at how much screen real estate they waste. GOD I love pointless 90s stylization. I adore it. How do you guys feel about them?

Volcanic take - I play Goldeneye and Perfect Dark like this:

I just find it easier for some reason. I've always played those two games in particular with the left grip.

EDIT: for clarity I use 1.2 controls with the left grip in both games.

This trend but for retro shooters exclusively. My top 25.

ADDENDUM: The title was supposed to say "Retro Styled" To cover modern games that also capture that classic feel. Apologies.

a few things to note:

  • Assume Blood, Dusk and Cultic are all exchangeable as the top three.
  • I am aware that some of these are mods and TCs.
  • You should play Ashes 2063 it's a good TC for UZDoom.

EDIT: Honorable mentions:

  1. Selaco
  2. Hedon
  3. Zortch
  4. Dread Templar
  5. Half-Life
  6. Hands of Necromancy
  7. F.E.A.R.
  8. Unreal
  9. Timesplitters

Question about G/UZDoom's inaccuracies.

I am aware that the ZDoom based ports are inaccurate to the original experience in a variety of small and sometimes noticeable ways. But that's not too much of a deal breaker for me so long as the vanilla games are "close enough" to their original experience and can be enjoyed to the end. For the supported games, (Doom, Heretic, Hexen, Strife, HacX, and Chex), I do find this to be the case as I have completed all of these games through GZDoom AND vanilla accurate ports in the past.

Here's what I'm wondering: Does G/UZDoom's inaccuracies make certain mods straight up incompleteable even when set to the correct compatibility modes? I have no problem switching over to DSDADoom for mods that don't explicitly require a ZDoom port, but I am curious about this.

When I'm feeling old school...

Whenever I play an old build engine game, there are days where I take full advantage of modern features like disabling autoaim, polymost rendering, widescreen HD resolutions, and all the like... but sometimes, I like to set it to 800x600, classic rendering, 90 fov, full HUD, autoaim on and no crosshair, just shoot and let god decide who gets shot.

(31M) Here's my top 25

I love hundreds of games. Sorting into a top 25 took hours and I'm still uncertain. Give me your thoughts.

Also I'm aware that some of these are mods and fan games. To me, a game is a game.

Redneck Rampage without the music is a vibe

LET ME FIRST SAY that the psychobilly sound track, which I believe was mostly by Mojo Nixon, is fantastic. Absolutely ZERO disrespect to it in the slightest. But recently I decided to replay the 'Suckin' Grits on Route 66' expansion, and as I was doing so through BuildGDX, I was unsuccessful in getting the music to work. I was too lazy to actually try and troubleshoot and just played the game as is. That's when it hit me. This game has great environmental sound design. Far better than most other FPS games from the time. The chirping of crickets in the outdoor areas, the flowing of water, the ice cold wind outside the truck stop and the hum of lights and refrigerators in the back. Every level has its own soundscape and it changes the vibe of the game completely. Going from this fast paced psychobilly rock and roll shootout to something quite a lot more atmospheric. Redneck clones shouting obscenities and firing at you to the backdrop of creaking boards and electrical hum is such a fascinating tone.

Sudden game crash? (0.9n)

I'll keep it brief. I was about to open the bag attached to the drone, when my screen went totally black, a deep bassy sound played and the game closed with no error message. I know it wasn't the usual stuff that can get you, so what happened? I reloaded and everything was fine.

Day 11, session was only 2 hours in.

BuildGDX?

Just generally as a sourceport that plays all the Build Engine titles, how do you guys feel about it? I can tell Raze is quite unfinished and may never receive any new updates, and the EDuke based ports are great, but some are less finished than others (VoidSW).

So that leaves BuildGDX. How is it?

Best sourceport for Shadow Warrior (1997)?

It's as the title says. I know there's a few sourceports for this game floating around. I would just like to know what the general opinion is on them and which is the best for a casual playthrough.

Mystic Quest was dumbed down for westerners??

So I've known about this game for a very long time. Played it a bit, didn't hate it, but it's clear that it's an extreme over simplification of the traditional series. Banger OST, btw.

Anyway, I've learned very recently that this game was designed specifically for a western audience, because the developers assumed westerners found RPGs too complex.

Correct me if I'm wrong here... doesn't the entire JRPG genre owe its existence to WESTERN games like Ultima and Wizardry getting popular in Japan?

Something you don't like about your favorite boom-shoot?

Being critical of something you enjoy is an important practice. So I ask, what are things you genuinely dislike about your all time favorite boomer shooter?

My favorite is Blood, and personally I dislike the lack of a normal basic pistol weapon. Caleb is a gunslinger, give him a big iron.

I don't like how ineffectual the Tommy gun feels outside of just stopping enemies from shooting at you.

The rat enemies feel like a pointless annoyance.

Movement feels a bit more sluggish compared to other shooters, but it makes up for it with the satisfying jumping.

I don't like how the expansion episodes are ordered incorrectly. Episode 6 is ordered after 4, and Episode 5 exists in it's own executable.

I really wish you could save the guns akimbo powerup in your inventory.
