My washing machine remembers where it was on 9/11/01.

I bought my house in 2019 and it came with this beast of a washing machine. My GF said I should get rid of it because "it was old and uses a lot of water". I got rid of her instead. No, but seriously we broke up because of having different opinions on how to spend my money.

In 2020 I lifted the lid during a cycle and noticed the agitator wasn't agitating as much as I thought it should. $5 fix. It needed new agitator dogs. Last week I heard it running and it sounded weird. Opened the lid and the agitator wasn't doing anything. One hour, a 6 in 1 screwdriver and $7 later we're back in business. It needed a new motor coupler.

Unfortunately, during this last repair I noticed the frame was super rusted and it's basically at its end of life. It looks like a lifetime in a humid garage in the south has taken its toll. I was curious how valiantly it had served its purpose so I looked up the model and serial number: Manufactured in mid August 2001. This thing's 25th birthday was this week! I have no idea how much the original buyer paid for it but I've gotten my money's worth.

BOGO Sandwich just hit your Rewards --- but not really?

Has anyone actually seen this show up in their app? I got the email but I do not see the reward in my app.

Anyone got a spare serving of this grillo's pickle liquid IV???

I don't really want to spend $20 getting 10 of these shipped to my house only to end up not liking them. #ItTakesAVillage?

16 Pro ~22 months

  • 90% of charging is with a 3rd party MagSafe

  • 80% limit basically always unless I am traveling (probably 20 days of this 22 months) then I use 100%

  • never used down to 0%

  • once or twice a week down to single digits

  • used in direct sun in Summer (85-95F) pretty often

I’m averaging 1.11x cycles per day - if this were 0.75x or so I would remove the charge limit entirely.

My trial by leanFIRE - 2026 Edition (FINAL UPDATE)

previous thread which has links to the original thread.

tl;dr: Trial is complete at 1 year - I am employed again.

Thanks again to everyone who has interacted and helped me brainstorm.

Why did I go back?

  1. My girlfriend wants to FIRE with me now that she's seen it in action. She makes a solid salary but our two salaries attacking the same goal is better.
  2. "Why not try working again and see how it is?" I didn't totally hate working my last job but I wanted to take the opportunity to trial FIRE when I got laid off.
  3. Industry-specific things that are "use it or lose it" and I was nearing the lose it deadline.

What are my numbers?

I kept decent records but don't feel like getting down to the penny so I'll summarize. I started with $600k and I'm around $700k now. I was entirely in stocks except for ~18 months of cash. I basically nailed my budget and spent ~$25k and did everything I wanted.

When will I FIRE for real?

This one is tricky. Seeing how easy this trial and re-employment was I'm tempted to work every other year or something until I get bored of that. It's too early to know a date for sure. Right now I'm taking employment week by week and if it gets lame I'm quitting. That freedom is a wild feeling.

What else?

Ask me (almost) anything!

Used buying: The "Highland tax" on the RWD models doesn't look to be worth it.

RWD base spec is:

  • 2024 ~$34,000 USD
  • 2023 ~$28,000
  • 2022 ~$24,000

Obviously, if you value FSD a ton this all goes out the window, but something tells me there's almost no way the 24s are 40%+ more than the 22s. I'm open to being wrong but these are reliable AF so I think it makes sense to go for the old one if you're budget conscious.

I had a great 4th of July.

My girlfriend's parents are visiting and they're kind of a lot for me to handle for any length of time. But since we both have separate houses I came over to eat and drink a couple of ice cold beverages. We listened to music and chilled on her deck while her boomer dad listened to brainrot at 120dB in the house away from us. 10/10 would do again.

Pic 1) Sam's Club Member's Mark 4oz hot dog simmered in water and then wrapped in foil to steam the buns a little bit. I fixed the onion placement prior to actually eating it. Not pictured: a second one that I grilled vs simmered and tbh it wasn't as good as the water dog.

Clicking the "Get refund" button doesn't do anything.

I have tried using the iOS app as well as in a browser on my Mac. When I hover over the buttons they are real buttons, and if I click the image I do go to the product page, but clicking the "Get refund" button doesn't do anything? Has anyone seen something like this before?

Doing an “idle re-learn” changed the way my car drove for the better.

I used to get this weird lurch when going from 0-10mph. It was worse when the AC was on. It kind of felt like a torque converter locking up too soon.

Now it drives totally differently and the lurch is seemingly entirely gone. 10/10 no notes.

2027 Rumble Bee (Base) discussion / thoughts

Questions up front:

  • Do we know if the RWD mode is available on all models of the Rumble Bee?
  • Do the 5.7s pull timing on 87 octane?
  • Are there any glaring issues with the base Rumble Bee that I'm missing?

The last truck I owned was a 4.7L Dakota that I loved but it ate window motors and ball joints. This truck visually reminds me a lot of the R/T Dakota and I'm sold on it aesthetically. The last fast car I owned was a Cadillac CT5V Blackwing. With those vehicles in mind I've been thinking about this truck constantly since they announced it. I really think it's basically the ideal DD for me.

Pros:

  • ~9,000 towing means it should tow everything I could possibly need
  • smaller center screen looks less gaudy to me and and more physical controls
  • V8 sounds
  • 20" wheels > 22" wheels for me
  • 4wd means it'll actually go when you put your foot down
  • ZF8 speed, 5.7L with variable displacement are both proven
  • shorter than the normal 4 door
  • no e-torque

Cons, or stuff that's not as good as it could be:

  • No air suspension option on the base
  • shorter than the normal 4 door, but I almost never have more than two occupants so this should be nbd

What is your target FIRE spend as a percent of your current spend?

For example: If you plan to spend 20k and you currently spend 40k you'd say 50%. If you're already retired it would be N/A, or 100% if you wanted to feel included with an answer. ;)

SYMIK 100W Charger Review w/some data

I picked up the SYMIK 100W "PSC" Charger from Amazon for under $30 USD shipped. I figured I'd document a charging test I ran for the internet to see if they're curious.

Methodology:

Charging a fully depleted 4Ah battery PBP005. The battery was depleted with a leaf blower on the highest non-boost level until the blower shutoff. 30 minute cool down afterwards. Power level was checked every 15 minutes for the first 30 then every 5 minutes until charged. I did this twice and took the average.

The SYMIK was paired with a 100 watt USB adapter and a 6' USBC cable allegedly rated at 240w. Watts are measured directly off of SYMIK the unit. This power reading is what the battery is actually receiving.

Results:

The SYMIK charged the battery in ~50 minutes. It started off at ~88 watts and then around 30 minutes (20v aka ~80%) in the SYMIK dropped to ~53 watts until the battery was full charged.

With a 3Ah HP battery this took ~27 minutes and the wattage never dropped from ~88. One quirk is the final 90 seconds the charger looked to be going from max watts down to 1-2w and back up. I'm not sure what was going on there.

Follow up and final thoughts:

  • I would like to run this test again with a shorter/beefier cable and see if I could get a true ~100w into the charger like the specs say it can handle.
  • I don't think the 65w charge setting makes sense for any of the 2Ah or larger batteries. I could see the case for not wanting to cram 100w into the 1.5Ah battery but I would probably use the basic Ryobi charger for that one or a lower powered USBC adapter.
  • I would really like an updated version of this charger that allowed me to set a voltage to stop charging at.

UPDATE1:

  • Flipping the charging switch from 100w to 65w lowered the peak charge to 57w vs 88w so I'm assuming the ~13% loss is just heat loss and to be expected and "100w" may never actually be attainable.
