Known as Poro Takataka, these sculptures stand as modern beacons welcoming people into Kirikiriroa (Hamilton). Inspired by a traditional Māori game, they represent movement, connection, travel, and the stories that have shaped this land for generations.

As a tour guide, I love finding hidden gems like this across Aotearoa. Most people drive straight past them without knowing the incredible meaning behind them.

Around 700–800 years ago, Māori ancestors sailed from Hawaiki to Aotearoa aboard great waka such as Tainui, Te Arawa, Mātaatua, Aotea, Tokomaru, Kurahaupō, and Takitimu.

These voyages are considered some of the greatest feats of navigation in human history.

The descendants of these waka settled throughout New Zealand:

🛶 Tainui – Waikato & Auckland

🛶 Te Arawa – Rotorua

🛶 Mātaatua – Whakatāne

🛶 Aotea – Taranaki

🛶 Tokomaru – Taranaki

🛶 Kurahaupō – Manawatū

🛶 Takitimu – Hawke's Bay & South Island

Today, many Māori can trace their ancestry directly back to these great voyages.

The waka weren't just canoes.

They were the beginning of a nation's story.
