⛴️ Auckland’s Ferry Building — over 100 years of history! 🇳🇿

⛴️ Auckland’s Ferry Building — over 100 years of history! 🇳🇿

Standing proudly on Quay Street, Auckland’s iconic Ferry Building opened in 1912, when the waterfront was a very different place.

Built from sandstone and brick, it became the gateway for ferry passengers travelling across the Waitematā Harbour. More than a century later, ferries still depart from here for places like Waiheke Island and Devonport.

Next time you’re heading to Waiheke, look up before you board — you’re walking past a piece of Auckland history!

🐟 Meet the Gurnard kumukumu:

🐟 Meet the Gurnard — One of New Zealand’s Most Interesting Fish! 🇳🇿

The gurnard, or kumukumu, is a seriously distinctive fish found around New Zealand’s coastline.

What makes it stand out? Those incredible wing-like pectoral fins and little finger-like feelers underneath its body. It uses these feelers to explore the seafloor looking for food such as small crabs, shellfish and other tasty morsels.

With its bright reddish colouring and unusual appearance, gurnard almost looks too exotic to be swimming around Aotearoa — but it’s also a popular eating fish, known for its firm, delicate white flesh.

Next time you see one at a fish market or on a restaurant menu, remember — there’s a lot more to the humble gurnard than fish and chips! 🐟🇳🇿

Sunset Auckland city:

🇳🇿 Discover Tāmaki Makaurau — Auckland 🇳🇿

Tāmaki Makaurau is the Māori name for Auckland, often interpreted as “Tāmaki desired by many.”

And it’s easy to understand why.

With two magnificent harbours, volcanic maunga, beautiful beaches and a rich Māori history stretching back centuries, Auckland has always been a highly prized place to live.

Long before the modern city existed, Māori communities established settlements and fortified pā across the volcanic landscape, taking advantage of the fertile soils, abundant kaimoana and strategic harbour locations.

Today, you can stand on maunga such as Maungawhau / Mount Eden and look across the same extraordinary landscape that made Tāmaki Makaurau so desirable generations ago.

Auckland isn't just a city to drive through — there's a story beneath your feet. 🇳🇿

🌋 Mount Taranaki — one of New Zealand’s most iconic mountains! 🇳🇿

Rising 2,518 metres above the Taranaki landscape, this perfectly shaped volcanic cone is hard to miss. Māori know the mountain as Taranaki Maunga, and it holds deep cultural significance.

It’s also famous for its dramatic beauty — on a clear day, you can see this incredible mountain rising above the surrounding farmland and coastline. 🏔️🌿

Would you hike to the summit? 👣

Tui

The Tūī 🖤🇳🇿

Meet one of New Zealand’s most recognisable native birds — the tūī! Their beautiful glossy feathers, distinctive white throat feathers, and incredible range of sounds make them truly special.

Tūī are expert mimics and can copy other birds, sounds and even human noises. You’ll often hear their strange clicks, whistles and gurgling calls before you spot them in the trees.

They love feeding on nectar, fruit and flowers, making them an important pollinator for our native plants. 🌿🌺

If you’re visiting New Zealand, keep your ears open — you might hear a tūī before you see one! 🇳🇿

Mt Ruapehu

🌋 Mt Ruapehu — one of New Zealand’s giants! 🇳🇿

Standing at 2,797 metres, Ruapehu is the highest mountain on New Zealand’s North Island. It’s an active volcano, and its spectacular snow-covered slopes are home to some of the country’s best skiing. 🎿❄️

But there’s more to Ruapehu than skiing — it’s part of the Tongariro National Park, a UNESCO Dual World Heritage area, and the landscapes here are absolutely incredible.

Would you climb it? 🏔️
