Three first-year engineering students at Olin College of Engineering—Justin Yoon, Pia Swarup, and Aryan Banerjee—have built a remarkable open-source autonomous bicycle dubbed the “Ghost Bike.” Built for under $1,000 using off-the-shelf hardware and 3D-printed components, the bicycle uses a motorized steel reaction wheel and a 200-Hz control loop to make rapid adjustments and maintain balance. A stereo depth camera and LiDAR provide environmental perception for obstacle avoidance and basic autonomous navigation, while an electric motor drives the bicycle and a servo motor controls steering. An STM32 microcontroller integrates the balancing, motor control, power electronics, and autonomous systems.
