This is a fictional story I wrote for fun.

A few years ago I worked the closing shift in a small office building. By 10 PM almost everyone had gone home except me, a security guard making rounds every hour, and the cleaning crew that would drift from floor to floor.

Every night around the same time I'd walk into the break room and buy a bag of chips and a drink from the old vending machine sitting in the corner. It looked like it had been there since the early 2000s. Half the buttons barely worked, one fluorescent light constantly flickered, and it always made this loud clunk whenever it dropped your snack.

One night I put my money in, pressed my usual selection, and waited.

The machine whirred for a second before dropping the chips.

Then I heard a voice.

"Thank you, Michael."

I looked around.

Nobody.

The break room was completely empty.

I actually laughed because I assumed someone had walked past the door and I just hadn't noticed.

I grabbed my chips and went back to work.

The next night I came back around the same time.

Same machine.

Same chips.

Same robotic voice.

"Thank you, Michael."

Now I was confused.

My name isn't Michael.

For the next week it happened every single night.

Every purchase.

Every time.

"Thank you, Michael."

I started paying attention to everyone who used the machine during my shift.

A cleaner bought a soda.

"Thank you, Michael."

The security guard bought a candy bar.

"Thank you, Michael."

Nobody reacted.

Finally I asked the security guard.

"Has that vending machine ever talked to you?"

He looked at me for a second.

"You mean when it says, 'Thank you, Michael?'"

I nearly dropped my drink.

"So you've heard it too?"

He nodded.

"I've been wondering who Michael is for months."

For the next several nights we started making up ridiculous theories.

Maybe Michael built the machine.

Maybe Michael programmed it.

Maybe Michael used to own the building.

Maybe Michael never actually left.

It became an inside joke.

Every night we'd walk by and one of us would say, "Wonder if Michael's working tonight."

About two weeks later a vending machine technician showed up to refill it.

I couldn't resist asking.

"Can I ask you something weird?"

He smiled.

"If this is about Michael... you're not the first."

Apparently years earlier the company had installed a voice module that announced the internal machine ID after every completed sale.

Someone thought it would be funny to give each machine a person's name instead of a number.

This machine's name...

...was Michael.

It wasn't thanking customers.

It was identifying itself.

The technician laughed and said people asked him about it all the time because the pause between "Thank you" and "Michael" made it sound like it was talking to whoever had just bought something.

I felt equal parts relieved and disappointed.

There wasn't a mystery.

There wasn't a ghost.

There wasn't some former employee named Michael haunting the break room.

It was just an old vending machine introducing itself in the most confusing way possible.

Even now, whenever I hear a vending machine make that little clunk after dropping a snack, I still catch myself waiting for a robotic voice to say...

"Thank you, Michael."
