New Subreddit for Chemistry Careers

I've made the subreddit r/ChemistryCareers for people to ask about and discuss college and career choices as chemists and chemistry students.

I'm looking for people to join who would be willing to answer questions, moderators, and suggestions for rules as well as what to make the icon and banner.

Thank you to those of you who are interested.

Shasta College transfer student

I'm starting college at Shasta CC, and CSUS is on my list of potential universities to transfer to. I'll be going to get a BS in Chemistry.

Roughly what percentage of students, especially chemistry majors, would you all say are transfer from Shasta?

Are all VOCs "bad"?

The first couple of times I heard about VOCs it was in a negative light and I had no idea what that even meant.

My current understanding of the word volatile in this context is a chemical that is a gas at the current temperature and pressure it is in. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Aren't VOCs also the fragrance from cooking food or that plants give off?

I haven't heard much fuss about those, so are all VOCs dangerous? If so, why?

Questions about usage of prison laborers

A friend of mine sent me a reel about the usage of prisoners who were chained up together to create trails in national parks and forests. I tried looking up more information about this but eventually it got to a point where I wasn't sure of what I had been reading. Is prison labor still used to build trails? Are prisoners actually chained up together? Is there anything that can be done to stop that, if it is true?

Why is Mount Bruce a sacred men's site?

Hi all, to preface this post I'm not from Australia at all, I'm a US citizen.

Today I was talking with a chemist friend of mine about geology and he sent me an article about Karijini National Park. I read in there that Mount Bruce being a male only place, but I couldn't get a satisfying answer on why that is from googling it.

Edit: Thank you for the answers. I didn't realize that the reason there was a lack of specific information was because it was intentionally being kept secret. Sorry if any of this came off as insensitive.

How to keep up with news regarding access to health care?

Especially local to California.

I tend to see a lot on Instagram about STEM and the environment advocating for people to make comments on legislation, and I'd like to know where to go looking for the same sort of thing in regards to making it easier to get good, low cost health care.

[Routine Help] pH <7 products help

Sorry for the odd title, I kept getting flagged for asking a medical question.

I've gathered this list of products to use to help with the acne I get below the neck: Amlactin Intensive Healing (15% lactic acid), 10% azelaic acid pads, PanOxyl Acne Banishing Body Spray (2% salicylic acid), and .02% hypochlorous acid spray.

For the Amlactin, I will be using it daily. Should I switch to a 12% or 2% lactic acid lotion instead? Neither of these options have Ceramide 3 and Vitamin E like the 15%.

As for the pads and sprays, how frequently would it be safe to use them, and how should I alternate between them?

Google calendar alternative

I hate how long it takes to set up an event. I'd like it to be as simple as opening my notes app and typing out when the appointment will be. I also wish there was an option for events that don't have a set end time.

Men's lightly scented or unscented, strong deodorant

I'm wanting to change deodorants since Old Spice has been irritating my skin, and I'm wanting to start wearing cologne. I do not care about natural ingredients.

I'm currently using the original scent Old Spice, and it makes my skin super flakey. I've tried the Gentleman's Blend and it got all over my clothes, didn't smell good on me, and was awful for my skin. I've tried an unscented deodorant but that quickly ended up not being available anymore. I've tried Native and it just doesn't work on me.

What shirt goes with this vest?

I usually wear button ups but I've wanted to try more casual clothing. I know it's not the weather for it but I got this vest. I was thinking of wearing a long sleeve white shirt underneath if, but what do you all think?

[POEM] Separating by Taneum Bambrick

I like the line breaks in the second part of this poem. Does anyone know what strawberry cider tastes like?

How to keep my math skills without being bored?

I may need to pause my plans on going to college for a year. My senior year I made it all the way to trigonometry. I struggled in that course because I didn't do my homework as much as I should have. I don't want to just spend my free time doing math homework from last year, so what tools can I use to review material? I really need to keep up my math skills because I'll be going into chemistry.

How to make getting back into school easier?

I'm a high school graduate and I'm being encouraged to apply to a technician job. One of the people encouraging me warned me that I could lose my momentum with school work (not that I had much momentum in the first place, but she doesn't know that) which could lead to me finding college too difficult.

My last two years of high school I was already struggling with daily math homework since I tend to be tedious with it, and not doing projects because I simply didn't like them. So, I don't know if I'm going to mature in a way that will be beneficial for college or if I'm just going to end up crushed by the amount of responsibility and effort it takes.

What did you guys do if you put off getting your degree to make it easier to get back into school?

Hey all, I'm looking to get an entry level tech position at Pace Analytical.

Does anyone know what the people there are like? And is the work environment toxic?

Over summer chemistry opportunities

I plan on starting Shasta college soon, and I'm hoping I can find a chemistry internship or something similar over the couple of summers while I'm at Shasta. Should I just email chemistry professors asking if they'll have anything going on? I'm not sure of what to actually do for this and if it'll be worthwhile.
