Staged preheat before austenitizing?

Staged preheat before austenitizing?

I'm about to heat treat some Zapp Z-Max and the data sheet from zapp strongly recommends 3 equalization temps before reaching austenitizing temp. I normally just preheat my oven (leave at austenitize temp for an hour before putting knives in) rather than preheating my knives because my oven is 120v so it's pretty slow. Even at max ramp rate if I were to do this 3 stage equalization heat treat, my knives would be in the oven for several hours. The austenitize time for Z max is only 10-25 mins. Wouldn't this several hour process cause crazy grain growth?

Flock device ID prevention

With the proliferation of flock cameras and the advent of device ID capabilities by flock cameras, I am wondering if there is anyway to configure/protect my android smartphone from ID by these cameras. I have several questions posted below.

  1. I know very little about cyber security but I do run rethink dns with an imported wiregaurd from proton vpn. Does this do anything to protect a phone from being identified by a remote device like a flock camera?

  2. Is there any software or configuration that will stop a phone from ID by flock?

  3. Would turning off my normal smartphone with sim installed when in a flock heavy area prevent the cameras from identifying my phone?

  4. If I use a burner smart phone with no sim installed and no internet capabilities but I log into my whats app or Instagram for use when I'm in wifi area, when I'm driving would a flock camera be able to identify my because I'm logged into an app on my no sim burner phone?

  5. I already wear IR protective glasses to stop face ID by cameras, is there anything I can do to prevent flock cameras from reading my license plate that isn't illegal in California?

Fort Hunter Liggett info

I'm gonna try to go to FHL this weekend. I have acquired my hunting permit from them but have never been. Any info is greatly appreciated!

  1. Can anyone recommend some starting locations/hunting zones for pig hunting?

  2. Are the campsites something that must be reserved in advance or can I show up and get one?

  3. Is there a visitor center where I can get info?

  4. I also remember seeing that firearms no longer need to be registered with FHL as long as you don't enter a cantonment zone is this still the case?

  5. Can I carry a loaded pistol on me while I'm at FHL and while im hunting like i normally would while hunting public land? I have a CCW.

Looking for cargo pants made of natural material

I currently backpack in tactical 5.11 style ripstop khaki pants and I really like them except for the fact that they are made of plastic and don't breathe in hot weather. Does anyone know of any cargo/tactical style pants made of natural material that are not too heavyweight for hot weather? Either cotton or wool or hemp would work since my most common use case is hot weather hiking. All of my other clothing is either linen or wool I just haven't been able to find good natural pants with enough pockets.

Long time to get back to soak temp after knives go in oven

I just put 2 medium sized knives in my oven (120v Hot Shot 18") and my temp went from 1925 to 1725. It took about 12 minutes to get back to temp. My soak time at 1925 is supposed to be 15 mins. Is the extra 12 minutes that my knives are sitting in the oven at slightly lower but still austenitizing temps creating excessive grain growth? What about in the situation where I need to austenitize at 2150 (upper limit of my oven and it takes like 45 mins to get back to temp after I put my knives in?

First time purchasing a draw tag did i win??

I put in a draw application with zero preference points for an either sex muzzleloader hunt and my draw results should have been a fraction of a percent i think. Am I reading this wrong or did I basically just win the lottery?

Reducing hardness with third temper

I'm about to start heat treating a batch of knives of various steels and there is limited exact heat treat protocols for some of the steels. If I approximate a protocol and after quench, cryo, and 2 temper cycles, my hardness is still higher than I want it, will doing a third temper cycle at the same temp as the first 2 lower hardness further or would I need to step up the temp for the third temper to reduce hardness by like .5-1 hrc? Is there a limit to how many temper cycles can be run? Can I run 4 or 5 temper cycles to further bring hrc down?

Stress relief cycling

Have you guys found that a 1200f 2 hour stress relief soak and then a slow in oven cool down helps prevent warping during heat treat?

Looking for iconic eye watering songs

Wow this post is getting so many responses!! I have learned of so many great songs and artists tonight via people's comments. However there are also many people suggesting common pop songs and just bad music in general. Please refraine from commenting if you don't have good musical taste. Let's slim the comments down to great suggestions for great musical artists. Repeat suggestions for great and classic musical artists are inevitable and im totally down with the classics but let's stop recommending bands of no substance who just played noise when I was in middle school. I'm talking to you MGMTand bands like you

I was just listening to dont close your eyes tonight by John denver. I'm looking for similar songs. Songs like wicked games, africa, forever young. I'm looking for those one off rock hits that are ethereal and iconic and make you feel closer to a lover who is far away. I'm open to new music recs as well if they are good like "sign of the times" by Harry styles, just found that song today and although it's a new song performed by a boy band guy it is very good.

Apartment safe 44 mag load??

So i live in an apartment and I have a lot of large flies during the summer. I take aguila colibri 22 lr rounds which are propelled by primer only and i pull the bullet and fill them with salt. They work alright for taking flies but the volume of salt is not that significant. I was thinking of priming some 44 mag or special cases and then filling them with salt. Does anyone know how loud a large pistol primer is? Just wondering if this load would be too noisy for the neighbors.

Preheating step unnecessary?

I have always simply ignored the preheating steps seen in data sheets from steel manufacturers. For example the data sheet for cpm-4v says preheat to 1500, equalize and then rapidly ramp to austenitizing temp (1950-2100).

I always thought this step is included in data sheets because knives are not the main application for most steels and I figure this preheating step would be important when you have very thick or large chunks of steel.

The whole equalize and ramp thing doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me either because it would take like half an hour to an hour for my oven to go from 1500 to over 2000 especially while full of knives.

Wouldn't this, essentially, long low temp soak before hitting target austenitize temps just grow the steel grain? If I skip the preheating step and wait til my oven hits austenitize temp, I can quickly put my knives in and my oven will come up to temp in a relatively short amount of time.

I also once heard Larrin say that he doesn't preheat his knives but he does preheat his oven. Any clue what that means?

Pilot G2 issues

The G2 has always been my go to pen for the way it writes. Now I edc a tactile turn titanium bolt action pen that uses the short length G2 cartridges. Everyone says the g2 cartridges are very reliable. I love the way they write but have had nothing but problems with the cartridges over the years. Through the years I've gone through probably 30 cartridges purchased from many different vendors and they all have the issue where they stop writing after a few months. I don't write very much so I'm thinking maybe the ink becomes stagnant and won't move down the tube. I've tried blowing in the back of the cartridge and I've tried soaking it in hot water and nothing has worked, they always just stop writing. I've never made it through even a third of the ink in the cartridge. Is this a result of me using the pen briefly and infrequently? Has anyone else had this issue?

54 year old barrel isn't shot out yet

I have a 1972 remington 700 in 270 win and after some accuracy struggles I thought maybe the rifling was worn. Brought 8 different load types to the range today and the first row I shot (4 rounds) made this roughly 3/8 moa group including the cold bore shot which is the "flier" on the bottom left of the hole. Guess it is just a picky rifle but my god what a laser! This is a 130 grain cutting edge MTH over 55 grains of IMR 4350 seated 20 thou off the lands. I also tried 40, 60, 80 thou off the lands with this charge of powder and bullet and was getting 2 moa groups. Pretty crazy difference. Looks like I'm ready to go look for some pigs.

Emails not showing up in gmail

SOLVED: adjusting sync settings fixed all of these problems including the email search problems. Go to menu in top left corner (3 lines)>settings>select your email account>scroll down to "days of mail to sync">adjust from 30 days (default) to 999 days.

I have been having this issue for a while where I can't see a good portion of my emails in the app or on the desktop Gmail website. If I scroll down in my inbox or my all mail in the app the farthest I can scroll to currently is March 31st. I would like to be able to just keep scrolling to see older emails.

I'm also having an issue where my inbox shows about 10 emails on March 31st and then only 1 email for April 1st and then the next email received after that in my inbox is over a month later on may 10th (i receive at least 10 emails every day without fail). So there are hundreds of emails that are missing from my inbox that I would have received between April 1st and may 10th.

If I search a specific date range in between April 1st and may 10th all of my emails show up for that date range but they just don't show up in my inbox or my all mail. I think this is causing another issue that I'm having where if I search emails from a specific email address it only shows me the emails that show up in my inbox and I can't find all the other emails I've received from a specific address unless I know when they were sent, search that date in the date range search setting and then manually scroll through and then I'm able to find emails that are hidden and unsearchable in my inbox and my all mail. Does anyone know how to solve this?

How to comfortably hip carry a big iron

I have a 3 lb (unloaded) colt kodiak. I have a leather hip holster and a kore high weight rated gun belt. I find that the weight of the revolver on my right hip pulls the belt on my left side into my hip and makes prolonged carry painful. I hike with this gun and need to find a solution. I have already tried a chest rig and found the slight bouncing of the gun when stepping to hurt after a while. My current options are: 1. Find a way to hip carry comfortably. 2. Sell the revolver and get a lighter 44 mag like the S&W 329pd. I really like the revolver (and it's almost unnoticeable recoil) and I really don't care about the weight other than the fact that it makes it painful to carry. I was thinking of maybe lining my belt with adhesive foam around my left hip or something. Has anyone had this problem and found a solution?

They fixed the 6.5 Creedmoor

What do yall think of the new 6.5 CM +peak. Can be fired out of existing 6.5 CM rifles and exceeds 6.5 prc velocities. I never would have bought a 6.5 CM before but now im thinking about it. You can get a fairly cheap 6.5 CM rifle in the sub 5 lb range.

My current carry

Lol before you ask, I don't usually carry 4 knives on me, I'll rotate between a folder and a fixed or i'll carry 2 folders for different tasks like a stout abuseable knife and a thin sharp fine use folder.

Gear List:

Top left, gun hoslter- vedder light tuck IWB with clip position modification by using some thick underwater camo pattern kydex and clip sculpting to have more room for movement around pants button area

Top right, spare magazine and holster- vedder mag tuck IWB magazine holster

2nd down from top left, firearm- sig p365 with radian ramjet barrel with afterburner compensator, M*Carbo short stroke flat trigger, streamlight TLR-6, Holosun 507K ACSS Vulcan green dot

Top middle, fixed blade knife- I call it the toothpick, made by myself, flat ground CPM 4V at 62 RC Cryo treated, red g10 liners and pins with black micarta scales heavily textured, sheath made of red kydex and black hardware

Middle, fixed blade knife- spyderco mule team HIC (High impact ceramic), homemade scales of black and red micarta and stainless screws, sheath made of red kydex and black hardware

Middle left, sharpening equipment- Thin bass wood plywood superglued to surface ground aluminum blank, basswood impregnated with 12 micron gunny juice poly diamond suspension

Lower left, sharpening equipment- DMT diasharp credit card sharpener coarse 325 grit

Lower middle, folding knife- spyderco spydie chef modified blade shape, mirror stonewash blade finish, lightning ferric chloride handle scale finish golden anodized titanium hardware

Lower right, folding knife- ZT 0203 completely stock

Lower left, pen- tactile turn short titanium 2023 bought at bladeshow west

Lower left, flashlight- emissar D4V2, emitter: 519A 2700K dedome (a very warm candle-like light), the translucent button has an amber backlight

Bottom left, band aid- damasteel printed damascus band aids, when you order bars of damascus from them they include these very cool band aids

Bottom bottom left, first aid- sterile suture kit from a vet supply store, I purchased a large box of them on Amazon many years ago and have sewed up a couple of cuts with good success

Bottom bottom middle, medical- can't forget to keep the wound clean: sterile prep pad is a must!

Not pictured: I really need to start carrying a tourniquet (i keep a good one staged for quick use in my car) and a quick clot pack. I cut about half the nail off my left pointer finger while cooking and wrapped it in the *kaolin infused gauze that i way overpayed for on amazon and the gauze did absolutely nothing to stop the bleeding. Any recommendations for gauze are appreciated
